Chapter 6 CHAPTER 6
Selene’s lungs burned as she sprinted toward the hall, power thrumming through her veins with every step.
The ground beneath her cracked under the force of her stride, roots and stone erupting as her wolf surged forward, claws digging into the earth.
The scream of her sister echoed in her mind, mingling with her own anger until the two were indistinguishable.
She had always been cautious, restrained, and careful. That had ended the moment Shadowcrest Park had claimed Diana.
Rex l roared behind her, his massive wolf form plowing through guards with brutal efficiency.
His presence was a shield, a battering ram, but it was not enough. Selene’s gaze flicked to him as she ran, torn between the instinct to protect him and the desperate need to reach Diana.
She could not lose either, yet time was slipping through her fingers like sand.
Inside the hall, the shadows seemed alive. Torches cast grotesque shapes on the walls, dancing as though mocking her. The air reeked of blood and fear.
The corridors twisted unnaturally, narrowing in some places, opening into vast chambers in others.
Magic lingered in the stones, thick and suffocating, a warning to intruders that this was not merely a building, but a trap designed to break anyone foolish enough to enter.
Selene skidded to a halt at a junction. Ahead, guards fanned out, anticipating her path. She snarled, feeling the wolf rage beneath her skin.
She shifted partially, claws elongating, senses sharpening.
In a single motion, she leapt forward, striking the first guard with bone-shattering force. Another came at her from the side, fangs bared. Selene twisted in midair, elbow snapping into his chest, sending him crashing into a wall. The corridor echoed with groans and crashes as she pressed forward relentlessly.
Rex moved beside her now, his massive wolf form covering her flank. Together, they were unstoppable.
But Shadowcrest had planned for this. From the shadows, more figures emerged. Vampires, werewolves, and dark hybrids, all converging to trap her.
Selene’s eyes glowed crimson and red. Hunger and instinct, wolf and vampire, warred within her, and yet she controlled them both. She was both predator and protector, weapon and savior. She struck again and again, every movement precise, yet fueled by fury.
Then she felt it.
A pulse. A magical signature unlike anything she had sensed before. It was not Rexl. It was not the guards.
It was Diana.
Her sister.
The chains had been enchanted to respond to Selene’s proximity, to warn Lucan if she came too close. And now the warning had come.
Selene’s pace quickened.
She barreled through the corridors, smashing through doors, knocking aside guards as if they were nothing more than shadows.
She felt Diana ahead, trapped in a chamber at the far end of the hall. Pain and fear throbbed through the bonds, mingling with the anger that had driven Selene this far.
Lucan emerged suddenly from a side doorway, tall and imposing, eyes blazing with red light. He did not attack immediately. He simply watched, smiling, as though he had expected her all along.
“You are persistent,” he said. “I admire that.”
Selene growled. “Let her go,” she demanded. “Now.”
Lucan tilted his head. “Do you know why hybrids are rare, Selene? Why you are the first to survive?”
Selene’s body tensed. She did not answer.
“Because power is useless without control,” Lucan continued. “And you, my hybrid, are untamed. You have raw strength, yes. But unrefined strength can destroy everything you care about. That includes her.”
Selene’s hands clenched into fists, claws digging into the stone beneath her. “I control myself,” she snapped. “I am not a weapon you can wield.”
Lucan smiled, a dangerous, patient smile. “We shall see.”
With a single motion, he raised his hand, and the room shuddered. Shadows poured from the walls like living ink, writhing and lashing out at her.
The air thickened, suffocating, filled with a pressure that made her chest ache.
Selene shifted fully into her wolf form, muscles bulging, fur bristling, fangs gleaming. She lunged, tearing through the first wave of shadows with claws and teeth. But the shadows reformed instantly, striking again, lashing at her with magical tendrils that burned like acid.
She roared, frustration and fury mingling as she fought to hold her ground.
Rex joined her, slamming into the shadows with ferocious strength.
Together, they tore a path forward, yet with every step, the darkness seemed to anticipate them, flowing around and through their strikes.
Then Selene saw her.
Diana.
Bound in the center of a massive chamber, suspended above the floor by chains of blackened magic. She trembled violently, tears streaking her face, lips moving soundlessly, pleading with Selene to hurry.
Selene surged forward, ignoring Rexl’s warning shouts.
“Diana!” she screamed. Her claws glowed with raw energy as she tore at the chains. Sparks erupted where metal met power, but the magic held.
Lucan stepped forward again, his presence a crushing weight in the chamber. “Do you truly believe you can save her without consequences?” he asked.
His voice was calm, but beneath it was the threat of a storm. “Every move you make, every shred of power you release, only strengthens my hold on her. You cannot win by brute force.”
Selene froze for a fraction of a second, considering.
Then her wolf side flared uncontrollably. She did not think. She attacked.
The clash between them was instantaneous.
Lucan moved with terrifying speed, blocking her strikes with bare hands, his magic rippling through the air, lashing at her with shadow and force.
Selene countered with everything she had, her strength amplified by rage, but each strike was met with equal precision.
Rex roared beside her, tearing through Lucan’s guards with inhuman speed.
But even Rex was forced to retreat as the shadows swarmed, separating them, isolating Selene.
She was alone with Lucan.
Her claws raked at him, catching him across the chest. He staggered slightly, but only for a moment.
Then he stepped forward, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Pain exploded through her body, magical energy burning through her veins. She screamed, claws dropping uselessly as her wolf side thrashed in confusion.
“Do you see now,” Lucan whispered, his breath cold on her neck, “why obedience is survival?”
Selene’s head spun. Rage, fear, hunger, desperation all collided, pushing her toward the edge. Her wolf instincts screamed to tear him apart. Her vampire hunger whispered that blood was the answer.
And she lost control.
A surge of pure, unbridled power exploded from her.
The chamber shook violently as stone cracked and torches extinguished. Shadows screamed and writhed, retreating from her aura as if they feared the raw force of her transformation.
Lucan’s eyes widened, the first hint of surprise flashing across his face.
“You… are not supposed to be able to do this,” he said, voice sharp with alarm.
Selene’s hands glowed, her claws extending to lengths that tore through stone effortlessly. Her fangs gleamed as she roared, body trembling with energy she could barely contain.
Chains shattered. Diana fell to the floor, gasping, free at last. Selene caught her in one powerful leap, holding her close as the raw power within her roared to life.
Lucan stepped back, the first trace of caution in his stance. “This changes nothing,” he said. “You are powerful. Yes. But you are still mine.”
Selene looked down at Diana, then back at Lucan.
Her eyes blazed red and crimson. Her power hummed around her like a living thing, dangerous and unpredictable.
“You want her?” Selene whispered, voice low and deadly. “Come and take her.”
The air crackled. Shadows twisted. The crescent moon outside the hall glinted over the tower.
Lucan smiled slowly, a predator finally intrigued. “Oh, I will take her,” he said. “And when I do, you will see what it truly means to be a hybrid.”
Selene felt something stir deep inside her, ancient and untamed, ready to break free completely.
The hall trembled. Dust and rubble fell from the ceilings.
Rex howled somewhere in the distance, warning that more reinforcements were approaching.
Selene tightened her hold on Diana, her claws digging into the stone floor as she prepared for the next wave.
She did not yet understand the full extent of her power. She did not yet know what she was capable of.
But she knew one thing.
Lucan would not leave this night alive.
And the next
move would decide everything.
Outside, beyond the walls of Shadowcrest Park, a storm gathered, unnatural and powerful, responding to the awakening hybrid.
