Chapter 5 The Whispering Forest

The fog thickened.

It rolled between the twisted trees like living smoke, swallowing the weak light that filtered through the gray sky above.

Arjun stood still, his breathing slow and controlled.

Around them, glowing eyes appeared and disappeared in the mist.

Fog Stalkers.

Silent hunters.

Kabir gripped his broken stone weapon tighter.

“…I count at least ten.”

Meera shook her head slightly.

“More.”

Her eyes moved through the fog like she was reading something invisible.

“They’re circling.”

Arjun noticed it too.

The creatures weren’t rushing them.

They were waiting.

Studying.

Like wolves surrounding prey.

A low whisper drifted through the forest.

It sounded almost like human voices.

Kabir shivered.

“I really hate this place.”

The system screen hovered in front of Arjun’s vision.

SURVIVAL TIME REMAINING

24:18

Twenty-four minutes.

It felt like an eternity.

But the tower wasn’t planning to make it easy.

The first Fog Stalker moved.

It slid out of the mist like a shadow given form.

Tall.

Thin.

Its body looked almost human, but its arms stretched far too long, ending in hooked claws.

Its face was smooth and pale.

No eyes.

No mouth.

Just a blank surface.

Kabir whispered in horror.

“…That thing has no face.”

Meera stepped forward slightly.

“Don’t focus on the face.”

Her voice remained calm.

“Focus on the claws.”

The creature lunged.

Fast.

Its claws sliced through the air toward Kabir.

Kabir panicked and swung his stone weapon wildly.

He missed.

But before the creature could strike—

Arjun moved.

His body reacted before his mind did.

Instinct of the Survivor activated.

He grabbed Kabir’s shoulder and pulled him back.

The claws cut through empty air.

Meera moved next.

Her metal rod flashed forward with surprising speed.

Crack.

The weapon struck the creature’s arm.

The Fog Stalker shrieked.

The sound wasn’t normal.

It sounded like dozens of whispers screaming at once.

Kabir covered his ears.

“Okay that’s terrifying!”

The creature stumbled backward.

But it wasn’t alone anymore.

Two more emerged from the mist behind it.

Arjun quickly analyzed the situation.

Three enemies.

Maybe more hidden.

And they were getting closer.

Kabir whispered nervously.

“So… any brilliant plan this time?”

Arjun thought quickly.

Running was impossible.

The forest was too dense.

They would get lost in the fog.

Which meant only one option.

“We hold our ground.”

Kabir blinked.

“That’s the plan?”

Meera nodded slightly.

“He’s right.”

She pointed toward a group of thick trees behind them.

“If we stand there, they can only attack from the front.”

Arjun immediately understood.

Limited angles.

Fewer surprises.

They moved quickly, backing toward the tree cluster.

The Fog Stalkers followed silently.

Watching.

Waiting.

Once they reached the trees, Arjun placed his back against one trunk.

Kabir stood beside him.

Meera positioned herself slightly in front.

The creatures stepped closer.

Their movements were slow and unnatural.

Like puppets pulled by invisible strings.

Kabir swallowed hard.

“How do we kill them?”

Meera lifted her weapon.

“Same way you kill anything.”

She looked at Arjun briefly.

“Hit them harder than they hit you.”

The first Fog Stalker attacked again.

This time Meera met it head-on.

Her metal rod struck its shoulder.

The creature hissed.

But it didn’t retreat.

Instead it grabbed the rod with its claw.

Kabir shouted.

“It’s grabbing you!”

Arjun reacted instantly.

He lunged forward and slammed his fist into the creature’s chest.

The impact surprised even him.

His strength had increased after leveling up.

The Fog Stalker stumbled backward.

The system screen appeared.

DAMAGE DEALT

EXPERIENCE +2

Arjun’s eyes sharpened.

They could kill these things.

But it wouldn’t be easy.

Another Fog Stalker lunged from the side.

Kabir screamed and swung his weapon.

This time he connected.

The stone smashed against the creature’s head.

The impact made a hollow cracking sound.

Kabir stared.

“…I actually hit it.”

Meera smirked slightly.

“Good. Try doing it again.”

More shapes appeared in the fog.

Too many.

Arjun counted quickly.

Seven.

Maybe eight.

Kabir noticed too.

“…We’re outnumbered.”

Arjun glanced at the system timer.

SURVIVAL TIME REMAINING

20:09

Twenty minutes left.

They couldn’t fight that long.

Not like this.

Then something strange happened.

A new message appeared in Arjun’s system window.

COMBAT ADAPTATION ACTIVATED

Another line followed.

NEW SKILL AVAILABLE

Arjun blinked.

“A new skill?”

Kabir shouted.

“Now?!”

The system screen expanded.

Two options appeared.

1. Quick Strike (D Rank)

Deliver a fast attack that increases damage slightly.

2. Predator Awareness (Hidden Skill)

You sense hostile intent within a short distance.

Arjun’s eyes widened again.

Another hidden skill.

The Karma System clearly favored him.

And in a place like this…

Sensing enemies could save their lives.

“Predator Awareness,” he whispered.

The system flashed.

HIDDEN SKILL ACQUIRED

PREDATOR AWARENESS

Suddenly the forest felt different.

Arjun could feel it.

Invisible pressure in the air.

Like ripples spreading through water.

Every hostile creature around them created a faint sensation in his mind.

Left.

Right.

Behind.

Even inside the fog.

Arjun inhaled sharply.

“I can feel them.”

Kabir stared.

“…Feel what?”

“Where they’re coming from.”

Another Fog Stalker jumped from the mist.

But Arjun moved before it even appeared.

He stepped forward and kicked it directly in the chest.

The creature collapsed onto the ground.

Kabir’s jaw dropped.

“Okay that was awesome.”

Meera looked impressed.

“…You just predicted its attack.”

Arjun nodded slowly.

“My new skill.”

More creatures rushed forward.

But now Arjun could sense them all.

Every movement.

Every hostile intent.

“Left!” he shouted.

Kabir swung his weapon.

Crack.

A Fog Stalker dropped.

“Behind you!” Arjun warned Meera.

She spun and struck another creature with perfect timing.

The system messages began appearing rapidly.

ENEMY DEFEATED

EXPERIENCE +5

The three of them fought back-to-back among the trees.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The Fog Stalkers began falling one by one.

But something still felt wrong.

Arjun’s new skill sensed more enemies deeper in the forest.

Stronger ones.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then suddenly—

The whispers in the forest grew louder.

The fog itself began moving.

Not drifting.

Moving.

Toward them.

Meera’s expression darkened.

“…That’s not normal.”

Arjun felt it too.

A massive presence hidden inside the mist.

Something far stronger than the creatures they had been fighting.

The system message appeared again.

WARNING

ELITE ENEMY APPROACHING

The fog parted slowly.

A tall figure stepped forward.

Twice the height of the other creatures.

Its body was thicker.

Its claws longer.

And unlike the others—

It had a face.

A twisted, smiling human face.

Kabir whispered in horror.

“…That thing looks happy.”

The system screen appeared one final time.

ELITE MONSTER DETECTED

FOG STALKER COMMANDER

RANK: C

The creature raised its head.

And spoke.

A distorted whisper that echoed through the entire forest.

“You… smell different.”

Its eyeless gaze locked onto Arjun.

“Player… who returned from death.”

Arjun froze.

His blood turned cold.

Because that meant only one thing.

The tower didn’t just notice him.

It knew exactly what he was.
