Chapter 5 CHAPTER FIVE
The hunger would not leave him alone.
Adrian stood motionless inside the blood-soaked chamber while the remaining survivors silently stared at the corpses scattered across the floor. The rat creatures had retreated into the darkness after feeding, but the smell of death still clung heavily to the air.
And all Adrian could focus on was the gray smoke rising from the bodies,it drifted upward slowly, twisting like invisible threads only he could see waiting for him.
The woman beside him lowered her spear carefully, her breathing still uneven from the battle. Blood streaked across one side of her face, though her sharp eyes remained focused on Adrian.
“You okay?” she asked,Adrian answered too quickly. “Fine.”the lie sounded wrong even to him,His stomach twisted painfully again, not from fear, but from craving the realization made his skin crawl, a notification appeared quietly in front of him, Scavenger Instinct Lv.1 active nearby consumable biomass detected His jaw tightened immediately, consumable biomass.
The system was referring to corpses as resources.
One of the surviving men suddenly dropped beside the body of his friend. “No,” he whispered shakily. “No, no, no…”
The corpse barely resembled a human anymore. Flesh had been stripped from the neck and chest while black blood mixed with the remains scattered across the floor, the man started crying openly Adrian looked away. Something inside him shifted unpleasantly.
A small part of him understood the body differently now. Calories,Residuals,Evolution,His breathing became shallow, The woman noticed immediately.
“You look pale.” “I said I’m fine.” His voice sounded colder this time. The woman frowned slightly but didn’t push further. Instead, she wiped blood from her spear before glancing toward the dark tunnels surrounding the chamber. “We can’t stay here.”Adrian forced himself to focus, she was right.
The Nest never stayed quiet for long.
the fleshy walls around them pulsed slowly while distant shrieks echoed through the underground ecosystem. Somewhere deeper below, something massive groaned loud enough to vibrate the chamber floor. The surviving man still knelt beside his dead friend.“He’s gone,” the woman said quietly. The man shook violently. “We can still carry him.”
Adrian immediately knew that was impossible.
The smell of blood alone would attract more predators.
But before he could speak, the system appeared again.
Emergency Quest Generated. Corpse Density Exceeds Safe Threshold Predators converging estimated arrival time: 4 minutes, the woman cursed under her breath the moment her own window appeared.
“We move now.” The grieving man refused to stand.
“I’m not leaving him.”
Another distant screech echoed through the tunnels.
Closer this time, the woman stepped toward him urgently. “If we stay, we die.” Still he refused.
Adrian watched silently for several seconds before finally speaking; “He’s already dead.”
The man looked up sharply, anger twisting across his face “So we just leave him?!” Adrian didn’t answer immediately because the horrifying truth was that part of him no longer saw the corpse as a person either.
The hunger pulsed harder, consume.
The word crawled through his mind like an instinct.
He clenched his fists hard enough for his nails to cut into his palms.
The woman grabbed the grieving survivor roughly and forced him upright. “Move!” The chamber suddenly trembled violently, everyone froze.
Wet scratching noises echoed from the surrounding tunnels, dozens of them the predators had arrived.
Adrian’s new vision caught movement instantly.
Shapes crawled across the walls beyond the darkness.
Too many.
“Run,” he said quietly, this time nobody argued.
The three survivors sprinted toward the far tunnel while shrieks erupted behind them. Small pale bodies burst into the chamber seconds later, swarming over the abandoned corpses immediately the sounds of feeding followed. Bones snapping, flesh tearing. Adrian forced himself not to look back as they descended deeper into the Nest. The tunnel ahead narrowed sharply before opening into a massive vertical shaft stretching downward beyond sight. Organic structures covered every surface while fleshy tendrils climbed endlessly through the darkness like veins inside a gigantic living body. Adrian stopped briefly at the edge far below, faint blue lights flickered, movement echoed upward from the abyss. The woman stared downward uneasily. “What is this place?” before anyone could answer, another system notification appeared,
Entering the Lower Ecosystem Layer, threat Level Increased, mutation Probability Increased, the grieving survivor shook his head immediately. “No. No way. We’re not going down there.” A loud screech answered him from the tunnel behind, the rat creatures had followed them.
Adrian looked between the predators approaching behind and the endless darkness below, only one path remained. The woman noticed a series of fleshy growths spiraling downward along the shaft wall. “We climb.” the survivor looked horrified. “That thing could collapse!” “It’s either this or get eaten.” The shrieking behind them grew louder.
Adrian moved first, He grabbed one of the thick organic tendrils and carefully lowered himself over the edge. The surface felt disturbingly warm beneath his hands, pulsing faintly like living muscle, the others followed reluctantly. Above them, pale creatures flooded into the shaft entrance moments later, screeching furiously as they climbed after them. Adrian descended faster.
The shaft seemed endless, darkness swallowed everything beyond the weak blue glow spreading through the organic walls. Strange cocoon-like growths hung suspended around them while distant movement echoed from somewhere below, then the tendril beneath the grieving survivor suddenly tore.
The man screamed.
Adrian looked up just in time to see him fall, His body slammed violently against the shaft wall before disappearing into the darkness beneath them. The scream did not last long, Something moved below.
A massive shape unfolded slowly inside the abyss.
Multiple glowing eyes opened at once.
And then the feeding began.
Six
The scream vanished almost instantly, not because the man hit the bottom but because something caught him before he could.
Adrian froze against the fleshy wall of the shaft while the sound of tearing flesh echoed upward from the darkness below. Wet crunching noises followed immediately after, accompanied by a deep vibration that pulsed through the organic structure surrounding them, the woman above him stopped climbing.
“Oh God..!”
Far beneath them, enormous shapes shifted slowly inside the abyss. Adrian’s enhanced vision barely caught fragments of movement between the glowing blue veins running along the shaft walls, Long limbs.
Too many eyes, massive jaws unfolding inside the darkness, the survivor’s scream ended with a sharp crack,Silence followed then chewing, Adrian’s grip tightened painfully around the pulsing tendril he clung to. The woman’s breathing turned uneven above him. “Keep moving.” Her voice trembled despite the attempt to sound calm, Adrian forced himself downward again.
The fleshy growths supporting them felt increasingly unstable the deeper they descended. Some pulsed beneath his hands while others twitched slightly as though reacting to their presence.
The Nest was alive.
That thought no longer felt metaphorical.
A low chittering sound echoed from somewhere nearby, Adrian stopped instantly, small pale creatures crawled across the shaft walls several meters above them, moving spider-like along the organic surfaces while black eyes reflected the faint blue glow surrounding the abyss. The rat creatures had not given up. “There,” the woman whispered sharply.
Adrian saw it too, a narrow opening stretched through the wall beneath them, partially hidden behind hanging layers of flesh. Unlike the endless shaft, the tunnel looked stable enough to hide inside temporarily, the creatures above screeched loudly the moment they noticed movement below.
Adrian descended faster.
One of the rat creatures suddenly leaped from the wall.
The thing crashed directly toward him with claws extended. Adrian reacted instantly, twisting sideways while hanging one-handed from the tendril. The creature missed his throat by inches before slamming into the shaft wall beside him, Its claws dug deep into the flesh-like surface. Adrian drove the tactical knife Keller had given him straight through the creature’s eye, black fluid burst across his hand, the creature shrieked violently and lost its grip. Adrian watched it fall downward into the abyss below. A massive shape moved instantly, the creature disappeared into darkness, then came another crunch.
A system notification appeared before Adrian’s eyes.
Predator Eliminated, Experience Gained.
Minor Reflex Improvement Detected.
He barely had time to read it before another creature lunged downward from above, the woman stabbed it midair with her spear, the force nearly pulled her off the wall entirely.
“Move!” she shouted.
More creatures descended rapidly now. Adrian finally reached the hidden opening and pulled himself inside just as another rat creature slammed into the wall where he’d been hanging moments earlier, the woman followed seconds later. Both of them collapsed hard onto the organic floor while screeching echoed outside the narrow entrance, for several seconds neither spoke. Their breathing filled the tunnel loudly.
Then Adrian noticed the smell.
Rot, Fresh blood, the tunnel walls around them pulsed slowly while thick organic sacs hung from the ceiling in clusters. Some twitched faintly. Others moved, the woman slowly stood first, gripping her spear tightly. “This place feels wrong.” Adrian looked deeper into the tunnel. His enhanced vision adjusted quickly.
Shapes covered the walls ahead, human shapes.
Cocoons. Dozens of them, bodies hung suspended inside translucent organic material, fused directly into the Nest itself. Some looked freshly trapped while others had already partially dissolved into the fleshy walls surrounding them.
A weak sound came from one cocoon nearby.
Breathing.
Adrian approached carefully, inside the organic membrane, a middle-aged woman stared back at him weakly. Her body was embedded into the wall from the waist down while dark veins spread across her skin.
Her lips trembled slowly.
“Help…” the word barely escaped her mouth.
The woman beside Adrian immediately stepped forward. “We can cut her out.” Adrian grabbed her arm before she moved closer, something felt wrong, the cocoon walls around them twitched, the trapped woman suddenly began crying harder. “Please…”
Then the flesh beneath her body moved.
Adrian’s eyes widened, something was inside her.
A bulge crawled beneath the skin of her stomach.
The woman beside him froze, the trapped survivor opened her mouth to scream, her jaw split apart instead, a pale creature burst outward from inside her body in an explosion of blood and torn flesh.
The woman beside Adrian screamed.
The newborn creature launched itself directly toward them with horrifying speed.
Adrian shoved her sideways instinctively while slashing upward with the tactical knife.
The blade tore across the creature’s side but failed to kill it. It shrieked violently and crashed into the tunnel wall before skittering across the ceiling like an insect.
Then the cocoons around them started moving.
One after another.
Shapes writhed inside the translucent flesh, more bulges crawled beneath human skin, cracks spread across the cocoon surfaces. The Nest was breeding.
The woman grabbed Adrian’s arm violently. “Run!”
The first cocoon burst open, then another, and another.
The tunnel exploded with screaming newborn predators.
Seven
The tunnel erupted into chaos.
Pale newborn creatures tore free from the cocoons one after another, showering the organic floor with blood and translucent fluid. Their bodies were smaller than the rat predators from before, but far more aggressive. Thin human-like arms clawed violently against the walls while black eyes snapped toward Adrian and the woman simultaneously then they charged.
“Move!” Adrian shouted the woman sprinted beside him as the tunnel behind them exploded with shrieks. The newborn creatures crawled across the walls and ceiling with terrifying speed, their claws digging directly into the fleshy surfaces while broken human screams echoed from cocoons still in the middle of hatching.
Adrian’s lungs burned immediately. His stamina had not fully recovered from the earlier battle, and every sharp movement reopened the wounds across his chest and shoulder. A creature dropped directly in front of him, Adrian swung the tactical knife instinctively the blade sliced through its neck, but the creature still slammed into him hard enough to nearly knock him over. Tiny claws ripped across his side before the woman drove her spear through its skull.
“Keep running!”
More shrieks echoed ahead, Adrian’s expression darkened, “They’re surrounding us.” the tunnel branched sharply moments later, splitting into three separate organic passages pulsing with faint blue light.
The woman stopped abruptly. “Which way?”
Adrian forced himself to focus despite the panic rising inside him,the hunger stirred again not toward the creatures.
Toward the cocoons, toward the dead.
Gray smoke drifted faintly through the left tunnel.
Residuals. His instincts reacted before logic did.
“This one.” The woman stared at him. “How do you know?” “I don’t.”
Another creature lunged from the ceiling before she could respond further. Adrian ducked instinctively while the woman impaled it midair. Black fluid splashed across the walls, then they ran again.
The left tunnel narrowed quickly, forcing them through tight spaces lined with thick organic veins. The Nest walls pulsed faster here, almost reacting to their movement.
Behind them, the screeching continued, Closer, Faster.
Adrian glanced backward briefly and saw dozens of pale figures flooding through the branching tunnels after them, too many.
A system notification flashed suddenly.
Warning. Juvenile Swarm Event Activated.
Threat Level Rising, Survival Probability Decreasing.
Adrian cursed under his breath.
The tunnel ahead suddenly opened into another chamber, but this one was different. Adrian stopped immediately, The entire area resembled a gigantic feeding ground. Bones covered the floor, Human bones, Monster bones.
Thousands of them fused together beneath layers of fleshy growth. Massive organic pillars stretched upward through the darkness while thick strands of web-like tissue connected wall to wall overhead.
And in the center of the chamber stood something enormous. A cocoon.
Unlike the others, this one towered nearly twenty feet high, pulsing heavily as blue veins crawled across its surface, the woman’s voice lowered instantly. “What the hell is that?”
Adrian didn’t answer, because the moment he looked at it the cocoon moved. A low heartbeat echoed through the chamber.
THUMP,THUMP, THUMP.
The newborn predators flooding into the chamber behind them suddenly stopped screeching.
Every single creature lowered itself toward the floor instinctively.
Fear, they were afraid of whatever was inside the cocoon. The woman slowly backed away. “Adrian…”
A crack suddenly spread across the cocoon surface.
The heartbeat grew louder.
THUMP, THUMP.
The Nest walls around them pulsed violently in response. Adrian’s instincts screamed at him to run.
But another sensation overpowered even that.
Hunger. The gray smoke rising from the massive cocoon looked impossibly dense. His Scavenger Instinct reacted immediately. High-value biomass detected. Evolution compatibility extremely high.
Warning.
Consumption may trigger unstable mutation.
Adrian’s breathing slowed, the hunger became painful.
Every instinct inside him demanded the cocoon.
The woman grabbed his arm sharply. “We need to leave now.” another crack split across the cocoon.
Something moved inside. A giant silhouette pressed briefly against the membrane before retreating again.
The newborn predators surrounding the chamber began screeching nervously, then the cocoon tore open. Black fluid exploded across the floor.
A massive claw burst outward first, covered in pale armor-like flesh and twitching black veins. Another followed immediately after, digging deep into the organic ground as the creature slowly dragged itself free.
