Chapter 3
“You… bullying your sister-in-law is wicked. You deserve to be beaten!” Leonardo Walker held a stick in his hand, still looking as simple-minded as ever. But the anger in his voice couldn’t be concealed at all.
“Damn it, you fool dare to hit me? I’ll make sure to kill you, you bastard!” Samuel Black usually bullied others. When had anyone ever dared to bully him like this? He snatched the stick from Leonardo Walker’s hands and started hitting Leonardo Walker with it.
Although Leonardo Walker was tall and muscular, he was stupid. When beaten, he didn’t even try to fight back. He just stood there, allowing Samuel Black to beat and insult him. “Stop it! Please stop!” Clyde Heller rushed forward to break up the fight, but Samuel Black shoved him away, causing Clyde to fall to the ground heavily.
“Ah—bullying my sister-in-law? I’ll kill you!” Seeing Clyde Heller fall to the ground, Leonardo Walker, who had previously refused to fight back, suddenly became furious. Ignoring the stick in Samuel Black’s hand, he swung his fist, the size of a sandbag, at Samuel Black’s face.
“Ow!” Samuel Black cried out in pain, swinging his stick randomly at Leonardo Walker. Soon, the two were locked in a scuffle. Leonardo Walker, now enraged, was like a runaway ox—unafraid of being hit. Yet his punches were delivered with neither mercy nor restraint.
After a short while, the short-statured Samuel Black could no longer take it. His face was covered in bruises, and his nose was swollen. “A fool’s beating someone! Help! Someone, please!” Samuel Black was beaten mercilessly by Leonardo Walker, who pinned him to the ground. In agony, he could only cry out for help.
The neighbors in the area heard the cries for help and rushed over to try to stop the fight. Everyone in the village knew that Leonardo Walker was mentally unstable and could be extremely dangerous when he lost control. If not stopped in time, he might really kill Samuel Black.
After much effort, several people managed to pull Samuel Black away from Leonardo Walker. An old woman asked curiously, “Village chief, why did you end up at Leonardo’s house? And why are you injured like this?”
Samuel Black pointed at the pig’s trotters on the ground, with a sad expression on his face. “I did it out of kindness. I saw that her family was poor and Clyde had just given birth, so she needed nourishment. But when Onardo came back, he beat me without any reason at all!”
All the villagers present saw the pig’s trotters on the ground. Coupled with Samuel Black’s cries, they thought he truly meant to help. As a result, they began to blame Leonardo Walker instead. “Leonardo, it’s a kind gesture from the village chief to give your family pig’s trotters. How could you hit him? Apologize to the village chief right away!” An auntie at the entrance quickly spoke up in Samuel Black’s defense.
Another auntie said to Clyde Heller, “Clyde, Leonardo is stupid. Don’t you understand? When he started hitting people, why didn’t you stop him?”
Leonardo Walker was also covered in bruises, but no one spoke up in his defense. Clyde Heller sat on the ground, holding his child and crying non-stop. The fact that Marcel Hoffman had borrowed money had already left her completely disheartened. Now, faced with the villagers’ accusations, she had no way to argue back. As for Leonardo Walker, he was simple-minded to begin with. Surrounded by people accusing him, he couldn’t say a word, standing there foolishly, his eyes filled with anguish.
Leonardo Walker ignored the villagers’ accusations outside and went inside the house. He awkwardly tried to comfort Clyde Heller: “Sister-in-law, please don’t cry. From now on, Leonardo will take care of you. If anyone bullies you, I’ll fight them.”
It was meant to be a comforting word, yet it made Clyde Heller cry even harder. She thought of Marcel Hoffman, who had died, and of all the wrongs she had suffered over the years. If only Marcel Hoffman hadn’t deceived her back then, she wouldn’t have ended up in this situation.
Leonardo Walker didn’t know how to comfort his sister-in-law. He simply got up, brought over the yam soup that had been simmering in the pot, and handed it to Clyde Heller. “Sister-in-law, please have some soup first. The baby comes first.”
Looking at Leonardo Walker’s honest and sincere smile, Clyde Heller suddenly stopped crying. She even had a ridiculous thought: Perhaps if she had married this fool instead of Marcel Hoffman, she would have been happier. Although he wasn’t very smart, he was kind and genuine, and he treated her and their child well. He was far better than those people who pretended to be kind but were actually heartless and opportunistic.
Actually, Leonardo Walker isn’t bad-looking at all. He’s tall, has healthy, wheat-colored skin, and well-proportioned features. He exudes a strong, masculine charm. The only problem is that he isn’t very smart. But in today’s society, that’s enough to be considered a fatal flaw.
Clyde Heller took the bowl, held the child in his arms, and silently walked into another room.
Outside, Samuel Black’s shouting continued unabated: “Leonardo Walker, you wretched bastard! You hit someone and now you hide in the house? Get out here so everyone can see what’s really going on!”
Leonardo Walker heard the sound. He silently stepped out of the house and sat there on the doorstep, saying nothing.
At that moment, a stubborn village woman stepped forward and stoked the situation further. “Oh, village chief! He’s beaten you up like this. How can you just let it go? Make him pay compensation! If he can’t afford to pay, then use his land to settle the debt!”
In Ox-Head Village, many people are kind-hearted, but there are also those with ulterior motives. They’ve long had their eyes set on Leonardo Walker’s yellow dog and those plots of land. When Marcel Hoffman was still alive, they didn’t dare to do anything. But now that Marcel Hoffman is dead, leaving only a foolish brother and a weak woman behind, they see this as an opportunity to get their share of the loot.
Another villager chimed in, “Yes, Village Chief. I heard that his dog damaged your sorghum field too! This matter needs to be settled properly!”
“What? Leonardo, damn it! How dare your dog mess up my sorghum field?” Samuel Black was furious upon hearing this. Just as he was about to send someone to check on the situation, Elliott Banner happened to walk by.
Samuel Black stepped forward immediately and asked, “Beautiful, didn’t you go up to the mountains to check on the sorghum fields just now? Did the Leonards really damage our sorghum?”
Elliott Banner glanced at Leonardo Walker, who was sitting by the door. His eyes flickered slightly as he said slowly, “Indeed, quite a bit of sorghum in the fields has been damaged. It seems like Big Yellow is responsible for this.”
Actually, that field of damaged sorghum was the result of her and Ronald Heller trampling on it while they were in the field together. She was worried about finding someone to take the blame for it. Now that Leonardo Walker had come along, she could easily shift the blame onto him. Besides, she also wanted to see Leonardo Walker’s reaction, to confirm whether he had actually seen what happened between her and Ronald Heller.
Although Samuel Black was extremely angry, there was a glint of delight in his eyes. He had long wanted to get hold of Leonardo Walker’s large yellow dog. Today was the perfect opportunity. He turned around, pointed at the dog tied to the jujube tree in the yard, and said to Leonardo Walker, “Your dog has ruined my sorghum field. Today, you must compensate me for it!”
Using one stalk of sorghum to get a strong ox that can plow the fields and earn money – this is a great deal indeed!
