Chapter 2 Drugs

Monroe

I could hear my heartbeat against my chest. My breathing came in uneven breaths.

“Be warned, honey. If he as much as glances your way again. You'll have yourself to blame.” What the fuck. What gave her the right to threaten me? Maybe it was the alcohol but I was already growing enraged.

“Why would he look at me if I do not stand a chance with him?” I asked. She looked slightly taken aback, her cocky smile disappeared, and what remained was a disdainful expression. I continued.

“If he's your man then why does he keep inching away from you when you draw close to him?” I asked deliberately trying my best to strike where it hurt her the most.

“You little…”

“Mira…stop that.” A familiar deep baritone voice said coolly. Mira hesitantly let go of my arms, sneering. I looked towards the sound of the voice and Flynn’s friend stood, hands tucked in his hoodie pocket, looking as dangerously alluring as ever under the moonlight.

I spun around and stomped in the opposite direction. Mira? Look how he called her, dotingly. Oh well, I'll have to understand that he belongs to someone else.

I finally found the bathroom, cleaned up, and went back into the party hall regretting why I stepped out of my dorm today. Shouldn't freshmen be studying right now?

Onyx was still there talking to the tattooed guy and throwing glances at my brother. I rolled my eyes already annoyed.

The party went on with me slumped on a seat, Onyx and her new plaything beside me giggling and speaking in hushed tones in the loud room, I wonder if they were merely reading their lips. More importantly, I tried my best not to look over at Flynn's friend's table by playing a game on my phone. Funny how I was in the presence of a lot of people yet I was…alone.

No matter how brazen I was, I didn't want to get on bad terms with a hottie who's in their senior year. It was bad news. Bullying never stopped in high school, it continued even after college.

Suddenly the music stopped, and I shot my eyes up confused just like the rest of the congregation.

“It's the cops!” Someone in the crowd yelled. What the fuck? Why were the cops here? The boy Onyx was with earlier had vanished like thin air. Was he with a contraband or were the cops after him? Some girls and guys had disappeared as well.

Soon, men in uniform burst into the hall their guns perfectly tucked away in their waistbands. They must want citizens to feel safe, I didn't feel the least bit safe. I picked up the clutch purse I had left in Onyx's care which she abandoned by the way, and ran towards my brother, hiding behind him, my eyes darting towards his friend who sat unbothered with his hoodie covering most of his face.

The lights in the hall were flicked on and some people who had been doing obscene things in the shadows scurried to cover themselves.

“We got a call from one of you…” one of the men said his eyes roaming around the room.

“For illegal drugs…so please everyone, cooperate with us while we search.” The man said giving a hand signal to the other cops with searching devices and those without.

A cop went over towards Flynn's friend and patted him down. Then continued towards us.

“Let me have that ma'am” a cop told me his arms stretched out towards my purse. I handed it to him while watching Onyx get searched.

“Found it!” The cop who had searched me declared. My eyes widened.

“Found what?” I murmured. Fear crept into my system, my fingers trembled. The cop brought out a parcel from my purse and flashed it at everyone.

When did that get in my bag? How did that…? I looked at Onyx bewildered and her confused expression told me she was unaware of the whole thing too.

“Sir…I don't…I don't.” My anxiety was choking me. Fucking speak Monroe.

“Ma'am you have the right to remain silent.” The cop said yanking me away from the comfort of Flynn's protection and twisting my hand to my back.

I winced at the force, blinking away tears threatening to ruin my makeup. Who cares about the stupid makeup Monroe? I let the stubborn tears fall.

“Sir, she is my sister, she wouldn't do something like…” Flynn tried to say but the cop handcuffed me and nudged me towards the exit.

“She didn't do it.” A calm voice forced the hall to go silent.

Flynn’s friend straightened up and cracked his neck, his expression annoyed like someone who was awoken from a deep sleep.

“Mister, we found this substance in her possession…” the cop said showing him the small parcel.

“I have proof,” he said and reached for his phone. My heartbeat sped up. I prayed fervently that he had something that would convince the cops I wasn't the suspect.

He flashed everyone with a video of the dimly lit hall.

In the video, the guy who was with Onyx, held onto her face as if he was planning to kiss her then the girl my crush had called Mira winked at the guy and slipped the parcel into my purse when Onyx wasn't looking before stepping out of the hall.

“See?” Flynn’s friend said and switched the phone off before slipping it into his hoodie pocket.

“Zyle! How could you?” Mira asked in disbelief. The cop released my trembling hand and I slumped to the floor shivering from fear.

“Sir, it was just a prank… someone pushed me to do it…”

“Ma’am you have the right to remain silent” Another cop said, handcuffing Mira. She glared at Flynn's friend and then at me before the cop nudged her out of the building.

Onyx and Flynn were by my side the next second.

“Labubu…don't cry, it's fine…”

“Sugar…it's over now okay…”

In my petrified daze, I looked over where Flynn's friend was seated…

He was gone.
