Chapter 1 Officer Sin
Tiana’s POV
I walk straight to my partner’s desk, and I drop the folder with a loud thud, which makes Tyler jerk back. “What’s this?” he inquires.
“Evidence that Kane Wilder hosted another illegal boxing match, even after you all told me you’d give him a warning,” I hiss.
Tyler grimaces, and I see the truth right over his face.
“You didn’t give him the warning,” I say.
“I forgot,” he lies.
I glare at him. “Don’t give me that bullshit answer, Tyler.”
He gives me an apologetic look, but I grab the keys, ready to walk out and slap my handcuffs on that dude.
“Nia,” Tyler calls.
“What?”
“You can’t have him arrested,” he tells me.
I cock my eyebrows at him. “What do you mean by that?”
“You don’t have a warrant.”
That makes me pause for a moment, and I open my mouth to tell him I’m going to acquire one, when he shakes his head. “No judge will give you a warrant to arrest Kane Wilder.”
“What do you mean by that?” I inquire, already getting irritated. By now, I can feel the stares of some of our colleagues, but I don’t give a shit.
“Here in Hill View, there are some people you just don’t arrest,” Tyler explains, and I look at him. “I’m serious, Nia. You can try to acquire a warrant, and then you’ll see I’m right.”
He was.
How could a small town be so corrupt?
Well, if I can’t get a warrant, I might as well get probable cause and arrest Wilder, then nip this in the bud.
I look at the venue where the new fight is supposed to be taking place, and I adjust the tight-ass skirt I’m wearing and walk in.
As I expected, I am let in without them even checking if I have something in my back.
The bouncer gives me a wink after he’s done staring at my tits like he hasn’t seen anything like it before.
Pig.
As I walk in, my mouth drops open.
How does a place this huge exist in this small town?
I wouldn’t know, since I’m either at work or home. I walk in, and as I expected, the fight is already in effect, and the whole crowd is yelling.
I watch the fight for thirty minutes, and I can tell that some people are livid; their champion is down.
Now, time for me to find Wild—
“Get out of the way, Gorgeous. The boss is coming,” a voice says, moving me out of the way.
I turn, ready to glare at him, or maybe give him a slap, when I see the man of the night. He takes a seat, and he gives me a long sweep.
Kane Wilder.
“Why don’t you come and join me for the night, baby?” he asks, his voice low.
Me?
Baby?
My eyes twitch, and I’m about to tell him I would rather shove my gun up his ass than spend the night with him, when I remember I’m a woman on a mission.
He tells the women around him to get out, and they scramble out like chicks, then turn around to give me a glare.
Come on, girls. It’s not my fault the dude sent you off. It’s on the guy. I walk over to him, and he pats his thighs for me to sit on.
I eye it for a good five minutes, and I look at the empty spaces beside him. I really, really want to shove my gun up his ass. I sit on his thighs, making sure there’s enough space between me and him.
But Kane seems to have other plans, because without so much as a warning, he brings me closer to him, and I can feel his warm breath on me.
“You’re sexy,” he murmurs in my ear. “What’s your name?”
“Val,” I reply, with a blank look on my face, even though I hate the way his breath feels on my neck.
“Hello, Val, are you enjoying the match?” he asks quietly.
I turn to look at it, and I shrug. “It’s all right.”
He takes the glass of wine in front of him and takes a sip, then he puts the same glass over my lips to have a drink.
I drink, while maintaining eye contact, and suddenly, the whole room is hot.
When he drops the glass, he smirks, and I can tell my eyes mirror the heat in his, except mine is coming from the heat to cuff him and make sure he’s in front of the judge— definitely not from wanting to do anything with this criminal.
“Who do you think is going to win this match?” he asks, clearly seducing me, because there’s no reason for this man to ask questions directly in my fucking ear.
One man is burly, and the other is muscular and taller.
“I have no idea,” I reply to him honestly.
He smirks. “I get that. Let’s watch.”
His hand is loosely wrapped around my waist, and just as the burly man is appointed the winner, I slip my handcuff on his left arm, and I stand putting it around the right hand.
He let me do.
His men are instantly around me, but I whip out my gun, which causes some people close to us to gasp.
“If you step any closer, I’ll shoot him,” I warn.
They all look at their boss, who shakes his head slightly.
I bring out my badge from my chest, and I say, “I am Officer Nia Sinclair, and you, Kane Wilder, are under arrest for hosting illegal wrestling and boxing matches that also involve fights with teenagers.”
His eyebrows cock in wonder. “Oh?”
I glare at him. “Oh.”
“Where’s the warrant?” one of his men asks.
“I don’t need a warrant when I have evidence and probable cause,” I reply heatedly. I turn back to Kane. “Now, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say, or do, shall—”
“Be used against me in the court of law,” he interrupts, looking too relaxed for a man who is handcuffed. “Let’s go already, Sin.” He gives me a wink that grates on my nerves.
I want to curse him out, but that’s not what a responsible police officer does, so I hold on to his arm lightly when I feel a spark course through, and before we leave, Kane looks at one of his men, and he says, “Don’t come to the station yet. I’ll give you a call.”
They purse their lips, nodding, and I can see the anger in their eyes.
Good.
Finally, someone who knows how to react in a situation as serious as this.
When Kane enters the backseat of my car and I enter the driver’s seat, he says, “So, you are the police officer who’s been sniffing down our throats.”
I don’t say anything.
“If I’d known you looked like this,” he says. “I would’ve let you arrest me a long time ago, Sin.”
My jaw hardens. “It’s Officer Sinclair to you.”
He smirks. “Okay, Officer Sin. I guess you’re about to see how things work at Hill View.”
