Chapter 1 : An Attack
Chapter 1: An Attack
Evelin
The city never truly slept, it simply changed hands when darkness fell. By midnight, the street belonged to men in tailored suits with blood on their hands and secrets in their eyes and I was born into one of those families against my will. If we were allowed to choose the family we were to be born in, I would never choose a mafia crime family. It brings so much chaos to my life, I never asked for this life. I have always wanted a simple and normal life but it looks like that was impossible considering the family I was born into.
Today, my uncle wanted us to have dinner at one of the fancy restaurants in the city. The air was especially warm tonight and it clung to my flesh just as soon as outside of the restaurant. My family is close with the owners of the establishment, The Rossi know a lot of people. Since I don't know my mother and my father are now in prison, my family consisted of my uncle Francis, his wife Laura and my cousin Milo. I have lived with them for the past eight years ever since my father was sent to prison under suspicious circumstances. I obviously know my family is involved in shady business seeing as my father is currently serving time for it, still, I have always tried to stay far out of it.
As we walked down the sidewalk to where we parked the car, a girl flashed a flirtatious smile at my cousin who was walking beside me. I laughed, knowing so well how much of a fuckboy Milo can be. He has got these dark locks kept trimmed up and eyes like mine, icy translucent eyes that contradict our skin color. He makes sure to keep fit as well, he has strong arms so he catches the girl’s eyes often. The icing on the cake is his warm smile that lures them in before they know what a real troublemaker he truly is. Milo’s head swiveled on his neck to crank it over his shoulder while he followed the girl's ass with his darting eyes.
“Fuck, that is a firm ass.” I heard him mutter.
I slapped his arm to get him back to reality and called him a pig for it. He grinned and shrugged as if to say ‘you know how it is’. Uncle Francis was the one to drive tonight and as we came to his fancy car, he unlocked the doors for us to climb in. He is known as the Big F of Rossi crime family and he looks a lot like his son, Milo except for the heavy belly. Aunt Laura was a short woman with a cream colored bob and a no nonsense attitude if she were to scold up. She kept us two children in line growing up. Francis helped his wife to the passenger seat before rounding the car to let himself in on the driver's seat. Milo and I sat at the back. My uncle patted his big belly in satisfaction of our meal before turning on the ignition. Milo was busy looking down at his phone but I was paying attention out the window while we slowly excited the parking lot.
When my uncle stalled for a moment to let the traffic pass, the headlights of a car previously parked shined bright from our left driver’s side window and it made me squint and turned my eyes away. There came a lull in the oncoming traffic, so my uncle eased off the brake and started turning onto the road when he noticed something. An arm coming out from the same car that the headlights had just blinded me. Uncle Francis cursed and shouted for us to get down, the command almost didn't register in my mind, but Milo’s arm looped around me and pulled me down to hide our heads between our knees. That was when I heard the sound of gunfire as my uncle sped off. His wife screamed at him as he held her head close to his chest to shield her and simultaneously, he was able to drive fast to cut into another street, trying to lose our trial. I heard another loud bang and the sound of a bullet hitting metal, almost like a ping. It was our car’s metal frame and I began to tremble in fear. He instructed Milo to pull his gun out and fire back if need be. This is all unraveling so fast in the most heart thumping way.
“Get the plate number if you can!” I heard him shout more orders.
All of this was passing in a fog for me as my body would tumble one way when my uncle would cut a sharp turn then back the other way until I returned to my position. You could feel the acceleration of the peddle when he would go faster down a straighter road. My gut was clenched in the anticipation of possibly crashing. Where would my body fly then?
“We lost them.” Milo announced to his father.
“Call Vito, I want full security details ready.” He instructed Milo while his eyes kept shifting up to the mirror to check our surroundings more thoroughly.
“Who could have that been?” My aunt sniffed. She turned in her seat when she noticed I was still quiet.
“Are you okay, Evelin?” She asked because I had yet to straighten myself up.
When I did finally raise my head again, I had tears stained cheeks the same as she did.
“Are you okay, Eve?” Milo asked, rubbing my back while holding the phone to his ear. He was waiting for Vito to answer the call and his hand went back to his lap when he started speaking quickly.
“Father, he said to circle to point B.” Milo said and my uncle clearly understood the reference even if I didn't.
It was when I finally sat all the way upright that I took in my surroundings again and my eyes stopped over something when I noticed the cut leather where a bullet had obviously lodged. It was so close to where my head had been, I heard all the metal pings as a bullet or two struck our car but I didn't realize how close I had been to being hit by one. I just openly stared until Milo noticed me.
“Shit,” he cursed under his breath, sticking a finger in the hole of the seat.
“They can get too close.” He muttered for everyone to hear.
In the Rossi family bloodline, the men are expected to fill the shoes of their father. There are a number of crime families and then the one family that oversees them all. A lot of this started back in the motherland Mexico, it is technically where I was born since my father impregnated a whore and took the child with him when moving to South Africa. It was all to start the empire with his brother, my uncle and the Vincenzo crime family who run the show.
