Chapter 2 : Evil Murders

Chapter 2: Evil Murders

Evelin

I don't know much, but all I know is that I am a whore daughter and a criminal’s pride and joy child. I have no siblings but my cousin Milo has always been like a big brother and protector to me. I hate the family business, and wish Milo had no part in it but he does. He has for quite a while now.

The rest of this chaotic and terrifying night happened in a haze of conversation being had around me and hands leading me into a different car and finally into our home. Vito is our lead security detail and a wall of a man, he is probably in his early thirties if I had to guess because I have never asked. I am twenty-two and Milo is three years older than me but age doesn't matter to Made-men. My aunt asked one of our staff to bring us some tea to calm our nerves. We were fortunate enough to live in a beautiful home, one she took a lot of pride in as she has cultivated it over the years to be her own. Before it was hers, it had been my grandfather's and when he passed away, he passed it on to his son's. My father didn't care for a large household and gave it to his brother while he and I lived in a beautiful apartment in the city.

My life felt so normal at that time, from birth till I was fourteen. I was a fourteen year old teenager who went to school with all my friends and did normal stuff like hanging out at a movie theater or the mall downtown. I had a woman who watched over me while my face was working but at that time I had no idea what he did for a living. The truth only came out when he got pinched and had no choice but to explain why he would be going to prison. My father was in for racketeering which is basically a slew of charges such as financial crimes. I think it was money laundering and other petty crimes they tried pinning on him like illegal gambling and robbery. He was doing fifteen years, which means I will be twenty-nine by the time he gets out. But he still calls a lot of shots from his prison cell. He never left the mafia life but he did depart from mine.

It sucked losing my only parent at the age of fourteen and then having all this time pass without him. Eight years he has been locked up, seven more years to go. I am limited to visit every other week if I can but not always especially when he gets put in the hole for fighting or whatever the hell he does in there. He is a big name in the prison, so he does get away with a lot more than he should, including face to face visits instead of the glass visits I am supposed to get with him. I guess depending on what crimes you are convicted of and how much time served, the level of access to an inmate varies. Glass visit means there is a glass window between you, and you talk through a phone. Face to face visits means you get to sit across a table for the inmate and that is where a lot of visitors are all scattered through this common visiting area. He has got plenty of people in his pocket so he doesn't suffer much inside.

I had been mad at my father for a long time after he had gotten arrested then convicted, I couldn't understand why he did bad things to land him in jail and why he would risk losing me. I had been conflicted on whether my father was a bad man or not. It is hard to understand life and its choices when being so young and naive. I was upset that I had to move in with my uncle and his family but not because I didn't love them but because my life changed drastically. I left my school with all my friends. I was enrolled in a private school alongside Milo once I got into high school after the summer break. It was hard seeing my father in that beige jumpsuit and getting yelled at for hugging him when it was meant to be a no contact visit. He told them to fuck off and hugs me every time anyway. I remember thinking he smelled different the first time I actually agreed to see him, he used to smell like his after shave but he didn't anymore. I recall as a child noticing that over everything, he smelled like something else and it felt like a piece of my comfort was missing.

Like I said, I stayed far away from the family business and I have never told a single soul who my family really is. I had normal friends who thought mafias were in movies like old time crooks. If I really thought about the fact that everyone I love are all criminals, it would really upset me. So I try not to think about it. One of my biggest fears when learning of all this was fearing that they might be evil murderers. As a child, at least they assured me that wasn't true. I was taught that different people do different things in the mafia and that the Rossi’s don't hurt people. I hope that is true. I know I wouldn't be able to look at my loved ones the same way if it wasn't, how horrible to take a life. Tonight, someone wanted to take our lives and I didn't understand why. I guess on some level, I do understand ‘why’. It has to do with our family business but that had never happened before, so why now?

My uncle and Milo had left us and gone off to do whatever it is they needed to do which I assumed involved meeting up with the Vincenzo crime family who they work under. The Vincenzo’s are the bosses, they are as high as it gets.
