Chapter 5 The clause
Aria didn’t move. The words "their second chance" hung in the air like a threat.
A second chance to do what? she asked quietly.
Luca looked at her like he was weighing every word. Like one wrong sentence could shatter something he wasn’t ready to face.
To control the narrative, he said at last.
To keep the company stable, to convince the public that the past is settled. And me?
Aria pressed, what am I supposed to convince them of? That I’ve moved on?
Her chest tightened, so this isn’t about love or even marriage. Her voice shook, It’s about erasing her.
No, luca said quickly. It’s about surviving them.
That doesn’t make it better. He didn’t argue, that night, Aria couldn’t stay in her room.
The house felt hostile now. Every hallway, every door carried meaning she hadn’t agreed to.
She wandered into the study by accident or maybe instinct. The lights turned on automatically. Dark wood shelves, leather chairs. A desk too neat to be personal.
She approached it slowly, there were drawers here too. This time, they weren’t locked. Inside the first was nothing unusual paper, financial files.
The second drawer stopped her cold. A document lay on top, neatly clipped, stamped with legal markings.
Marriage Dissolution Clause Confidential, her fingers trembled as she lifted it.
She read once.
Twice.
Then again, slower.
If the marriage ends before twelve months due to breach of contract by the wife, all compensation will be revoked. The wife will be subject to full legal liability and non disclosure enforcement.
Aria’s breath caught.
Breach of contract.
She scanned the page faster.
Emotional involvement.
Public embarrassment.
Independent investigation into family matters.
Each line felt like a trap tightening around her throat.
This wasn’t a protection, it was a leash.
A door creaked behind her, she turned, Luca stood in the doorway. How long has that been there? she asked, holding up the paper.
His expression changed instantly. Put that down, he said. You knew, she whispered. You knew this was in the contract.
Yes, and you didn’t tell me.I didn’t think you’d go looking.
That’s not an answer.
He walked toward her slowly. Aria, listen to me, that clause is standard.
For who? she snapped. People you plan to destroy? It’s there in case things go wrong.
They already have, she dropped the paper on the desk like it burned.
So if I ask questions, I lose everything, she said. If I fall in love, I lose everything. If I make the wrong move, I lose everything.
His jaw tightened. You agreed to the terms, I agreed without knowing I was walking into a war. Silence stretched between them.
Then Luca spoke, low and controlled.
There are forces in this family you don’t understand.
Then explain them to me.
I can’t.
Aria laughed softly, bitter. Because you’re protecting them, not me.
That hit him.
She saw it in his eyes.
Later, back in her room, Aria locked the door and sat on the edge of the bed.
Her phone buzzed unknown Number.
She hesitated, then answered.
Hello? A woman’s voice replied. Calm, familiar, too close to her own.
If you’re reading the contract, the woman said, then it’s already begun.
Aria’s blood ran cold. Who is this? she whispered.
A soft laugh came through the line.
I’m the woman you replaced, the voice said. And if you want to survive this marriage you need to leave before they finish what they started with me.
The call ended aria stared at the phone, her heart pounding so hard it hurt.
She wasn’t alone,and Elena Moretti hadn’t disappeared.She had escaped.
