Chapter 6 006
Draven’s POV
“That troublemaker,” I breathed as I watched her leave.
I didn’t know why that maid had been appearing in front of me the last few days, and I knew it wasn’t just me being paranoid. She was up to something, which I would find out soon.
But what could a weak omega like herself be up to?
“This is bad,” I groaned as I removed my mask and sat on the bed, but I immediately grabbed it again when I heard footsteps approaching.
Who could that be?
My senses heightened, and I finally relaxed when I recognized the person’s scent. It was Zeric, and Yana, one of the women in my harem.
I heard her arguing with the guards outside, demanding to come in even though I hadn’t summoned her, but Yana wouldn’t back down without a fight.
“Your Highness, it’s Yana,” she announced herself, and I grew irritated seeing that she wouldn’t leave.
“What’s it? Do you not want to see her?” my wolf, Ryder, mocked, and I groaned, blocking him out.
“Send her in,” I ordered my men, and they only let her enter after that, though not without threatening to get back at them.
“Your Highness…” she rambled as she walked in, but I cut her off.
“You don’t threaten my men ever again!” I growled, and she immediately fell to her knees.
“I’m sorry, Your Majesty. Yana must have lost her mind. It won’t happen again,” she begged, and Zeric rushed in with his sword.
“What’s it, Your Majesty?”
“Nothing. I’m just lecturing Lady Yana on how to act. You can leave, and you can leave too,” I dismissed them.
“I’m actually here to see Your Majesty. You can leave, Sir Zeric,” she rasped, and I gave Zeric a look to leave. “Don’t worry, I will take care of His Highness,” she said, her voice dripping with enthusiasm as she stepped closer.
“What are you doing here, Yana? I never summoned you,” I rumbled, and she smiled.
“When did I ever need you to summon me before I could seek you? I’m here to help you sleep, Your Majesty,” she breathed, and her offer sounded like a threat.
The reason I kept such a harem was because of my loneliness. I was looking for a vessel to fill the void in my heart, searching for a light to shine through my darkness, but it was all useless.
“Help me sleep? That’s laughable,” I mocked, knowing I wouldn’t sleep for an hour before that nightmare haunted me again.
“I just want to accompany you,” she blurted, batting her lashes as she stepped closer. She let her cloak drape down her body, revealing her pale skin, but I wasn’t the least bit aroused by her actions.
I didn’t fancy her because of her beauty but because of my own search for a cure. It seemed she was mistaken…many of them were mistaken.
“Return to your room. I would like to be left alone today.”
“But, Your Majesty..”
“Do you want to die?” I growled, and she jumped up in fright, grabbing her cloak.
“I’m sorry, Your Majesty. This humble lady will retire to her room now,” she rasped as she stormed out.
“Zeric, come in,” I mind-linked, and he entered immediately.
Zeric was my right-hand man. I trusted him more than my Beta because he had proved himself over time, and I thought he was the only honest person in the palace. I trusted him more than myself because I wasn’t to be trusted either, especially after that night.
“Your Majesty,” Zeric said as he bowed his head, and I asked him to come closer.
“What’s it, Your Majesty?” he asked, glancing around.
“Nothing. Have you found anything about the rogue that broke in?” I asked as my eyes darkened with anger.
I couldn’t believe someone had the courage to break into my palace and try to assassinate me. That wasn’t the first time, but I figured they had grown bolder, or maybe my men had grown relaxed.
“Not yet, Your Majesty. I’m sorry for my incompetence.”
“Don’t do that, Zeric, but I think we need to reinforce our men. They have been too relaxed. Ask everyone to assemble before sunrise tomorrow,” I ordered, but Zeric looked uneasy.
“About that…the soldiers are having drinks tonight. They might..” he stuttered, but he swallowed his words when he saw my eyes darken.
“They will be on the field before sunrise, Your Majesty!” he rasped.
“And that court maid, keep an eye on her. Make sure she doesn’t cause trouble,” I ordered, remembering her.
My gut was telling me she was trouble.
“Yes, Your Majesty, but do you perhaps fancy the court maid?” he asked, and I shot him a cold glare.
Why would he think that?
His question made me remember her appearance, and in truth she was pale; her bashful, innocent look added to her allure. Her blue eyes were tempting, her sleek chestnut hair…why was I thinking of that?
“Stop saying nonsense. Don’t you think her appearance is suspicious?”
“I’m not following you, Your Majesty,” he replied.
“She was there to witness the assassin’s murder, and her timing of arrival was perfect. I don’t think that was a coincidence.”
There had been cases of spies disguising themselves as workers to assassinate or steal the Pack’s defense strategy, but they all failed. I didn’t think less of her, she might look weak but still be capable.
“Okay, Alpha. I will keep an eye on her,” Zeric assured. “Are you going to sleep now?” he asked, and my eyes went to my cold bed.
He knew better than anyone that I couldn’t possibly sleep, but I just nodded.
“Hmm…maybe after my bath. Call the court lady to draw my bath,” I hollered.
“This late?”
“Do you want to do it?” I asked, and he chuckled.
“I will go call her.” He turned to leave, but I added a threat.
“Tell her I’m having my tea now. If my tea gets cold before she gets here, she’s dead,” I beamed as a sinister smirk crept to my lips.
Let’s see how long you can lie, omega.
