Chapter 1 NOT A BLOOD BANK… RIGHT?
Ezra's pov.
The school compound was packed. People moving in groups, talking about nothing that mattered at all, completely oblivious to the danger around them.
If only they knew how dangerous the world was, perhaps they wouldn't be this carefree. Or maybe they know, but had a personal experience like I did.
I kept my head down as I walked behind my teammates. They talked about the game coming up in a few days, boasting about how easy it would be to win, since our rival was a new club. Or too elite for it to be known.
Either way I believe we could crush them — they could crush them, because I was always on the bench.
I didn't really mix well in the crowd. Or anywhere.
People avoided me because of how I looked and behaved. Not like I mind or anything. The whole thing keeps me under the radar.
My teammates weren't welcoming at first, they hated me because I was weak, and definitely not fit to be on the hockey team. But as time went on, they accepted me, as an errand boy.
So yeah, my life wasn't really filled with roses. It was hard to fit into this new system.
But if I were to choose between my past life where I was noticed, and my present life where I suck, I'll choose this one over and over again.
Because I refuse to be used as food.
My life started roughly.
My mother died when I was born or so they say. And I had no information about my father.
I had no name. No family. I had nothing that meant anything.
Except a room, and what flows through my veins.
Blood.
The room was small, cold and dark. A bed, a thin blanket, and a window I had to stand on the bed to see out of. That room was my entire world for years.
Because I wasn't raised in the human world.
I was raised in theirs.
Most humans didn't know vampires existed. They lived their whole lives without ever knowing there was another world underneath this one. A world older and darker. Built on rules that humans never agreed to but were expected to follow anyway.
I grew up in that world.
Not as a guest, but as a captive. Raised for one purpose.
Blood.
That was the word they used without shame. Blood bank. That was what I was. A supply. Something to be maintained and used and put back when they were finished.
The family that owned me was the Voss family. The most powerful name in that entire world. Their lord had four sons. Quadruplets, and were raised to be the most feared thing walking.
I grew up in their house.
No, it was a fucking fortress. Long dark hallways. Rooms with high ceilings and no form of light. And the light problem wasn't because they were allergic to sunlight — hell no, they bathed in the sun, it was because they were lunatics.
The vampires we see in movies are washed down versions of the real life vampires. The real ones were more ruthless.
I can say that anywhere because I lived with them all my life, and served the most terrifying ones.
The quadruplets were so dangerous that even their own kind feared them. No vampire wanted to get on their nerves, and God forbid a human falls victim.
Thankfully, they never saw me as anything more than food. Anytime they needed blood, I went to their room, and went back when they were done.
That was the routine.
In exchange for my blood, I was well fed and didn't have to worry about anything else. Other humans in that world had made peace with it. Some of them even seemed happy. They were protected and fed and never had to worry about the hard things.
They told themselves that they were okay.
I was never okay.
I was not food.
I've seen what happens to humans when they are no longer needed. They are thrown into a burning furnace — alive.
I knew it was only a matter of time before that became my fate. So I decided to do the most impossible task a human has ever tried in this world… escape.
Humans did not run from their masters. That was what they taught us. It had never been done. It could not be done. Those who tried it were brought back, and what happened after that would be worse than anything they had left behind.
I was part of that too.
I tried to escape multiple times. I was caught, brought back and beaten like nothing. One time, I thought I was going to die, but Lord Lopez saved me.
I still don't know why, but I knew the reason wasn't in my favour.
So I tried again, carefully this time.
And what looked like a dream, finally became a reality.
I escaped. I became the first human to leave that world.
And that was years ago now.
The life I had now wasn't as fancy as I expected, but I was going to choose it over being a blood bank.
But no path to freedom comes easy.
I could feel my past catching to me. I always knew that it was just going to be a matter of time before they found me, but I never expected it to be this fast.
I've lived under the radar for a year. I only joined the team because I liked hockey, but I never really got the chance to play for fear of being seen. But somehow they caught up to me.
I couldn't see them, but I could feel their presence looming over me.
I knew it's just a matter of days before I'm dragged back to that crazy world. Never to be seen or heard from again.
But this time, I wasn't going to go down without a fight. I would definitely not allow some hooligans to control my life.
I might not have their strength, wit or speed. But I was going to fight till my last breath.
Because I am Ezra.
And I'm not a blood bank…. Right?
