Chapter 6
What’s even more surprising is that some people act like complete actors.
Looking at the woman with tearful eyes standing in her way, Lynn Newman frowned in disgust.
“Sis, doing this will hurt Grandpa and Dad’s feelings.”
Lynn Newman’s gaze fell on her slightly rounded belly. She raised her eyebrows sarcastically. “The same tricks you used 7 years ago? You really want to try them again?”
“What did you say, sister?” Payne Eden looked at her pitifully, trying to grab the hem of her dress. Lynn Newman moved quickly to avoid her, but she underestimated her opponent. Before she could react, Payne Eden fell to the ground.
The sudden turn of events left everyone stunned.
“My stomach hurts so much,” Payne Eden whimpered, crying and complaining, “Sis, you could have held me up. Why didn’t you? Are you still angry with me?”
“Paine!”
Fang Mei rushed forward from the crowd, shouting angrily, “Lynn Newman, you’re such a jinx! Every time you show up, Payne gets hurt. If anything happens to my grandson, I definitely won’t let you off.”
Look at how skillfully she speaks. Payne Eden should learn more from her mother.
Lynn Newman remained silent. She really didn’t want to have anything more to do with that family.
“Let’s go.” Lynn Newman didn’t want to watch the mother and daughter act out their drama. But Payne Eden was already using the child as part of her act, so she wouldn’t let Lynn leave.
“Sis, are you still holding a grudge against me?”
Some people couldn’t bear to watch it. The pregnant sister had fallen, yet Lynn Newman remained cold-hearted and expressionless.
Paine Eden continued to plead, “As long as you’re willing to come back, I’ll give you Morning Sun. I’ll also give you Miss Newman’s identity. Please, sister, I beg you.”
The little daughter’s crying melted Bert Eden’s heart. With tears in his eyes and rage burning in his heart, he stepped forward. “Bessie Eden, you’re truly heartless. I regret bringing you back. Your aunt is right—you’re nothing but a curse to everyone.”
Filled with guilt and sorrow, he picked up Payne Eden and rushed toward the door. “Arrange a car to take her to the hospital immediately.”
The conflicting attitudes before and after were like a sharp knife stabbing into her heart.
Ha! This is her “good” father.
On the way back, there was silence in the car.
Julie Berkeley is someone who truly respects others’ privacy. Although she noticed some of the conflicts and rivalries among the wealthy, she didn’t ask Lynn Newman out of curiosity.
“I’m sorry.”
The sudden apology left Julie Berkeley momentarily stunned. “You don’t need to apologize to me.”
Lynn Newman never expected things to turn out this way. She smiled self-deprecatingly, lowering her gaze to hide the pain in her eyes. “Julie Berkeley, see? I really am not a good wife at all.”
She deliberately exposed her most embarrassing secrets, those hidden deep in her heart, right in front of him. If Julie Berkeley was still willing to keep their previous agreement, there was nothing left for her to hide from him. And if he wasn’t willing, Lynn Newman wouldn’t force him.
Although she seems to have been driven out of the Eden family’s home, how could her profit-driven father willingly waste such a great opportunity where “marrying off a daughter” could be seen as a business deal?
So, the decision to get married dissuaded Bert Eden from his plans, and this was also one of the reasons why Lynn Newman agreed to the marriage.
“We’re husband and wife.”
One sentence made Lynn Newman feel strangely at ease.
But she pursed her lips and asked, “Aren’t you afraid of Eden’s retribution…”
With a finger pressed against her lips, Julie Berkeley smiled slightly, a hint of sharpness in her eyes: “Perhaps, you could try to trust me.”
He’s never been the kind of person to give up easily. Besides, when he proposed to Lynn Newman, he had no intention of using her family’s influence to advance his career.
A member of the Eden family? He doesn’t even consider them worthy of attention.
Perhaps it was his bright eyes, or perhaps his confident tone of voice, but Lynn Newman believed him.
She took his hand in hers, met his gaze, and said, “When the time comes, I will definitely stand by your side.”
A clear smile appeared in Julie Berkeley’s eyes. The dim streetlight shone through the car window, illuminating her delicate face. Somehow, the person before her suddenly seemed far more real and vivid.
Lynn Newman averted her gaze, as if trying to avoid looking. Her otherwise calm heart was like a lake into which a stone had been thrown, creating ripples that spread out in circles.
“Then when shall we go get the marriage certificate?”
Julie Berkeley’s words broke the silence. Lynn Newman was somewhat surprised. She glanced at him and, seeing his serious expression, felt a warmth in her heart.
He thought for a moment, then asked again, “Tomorrow at 3 p.m., shall I wait for you at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau?” Berkeley was decisive in his actions. Once a decision was made, he would act immediately.
Lynn Newman’s ears turned slightly red, then she nodded.
The household registration book was still kept with the Eden family. When Lynn Newman mustered the courage to call her grandfather, to her surprise, the old man agreed readily on the phone. His only condition was that he wanted to meet with her in person.
Lynn Newman agreed, though she could guess what the other person’s intentions were. Having been raised as Eden’s heir, she had grown up under the old man’s supervision and guidance.
On Monday, she got up early. She pulled back the curtains, and the warm, gentle sunlight streamed over her. Lynn Newman yawned and stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing at the river in the distance.
After the heavy rain, the entire Qingcheng City seemed to have been completely transformed.
Suddenly, the “ding-dong” of the doorbell caught her attention.
Lynn Newman opened the door and saw that it was Julie Berkeley’s driver. She listened in confusion as he said, “The gentleman asked me to deliver some clothes.” He held several bags in his hands. “I’ll be your driver today. I’ll be waiting downstairs throughout the day. If Miss Newman needs to use the car, please give me a call directly.”
Lynn Newman took the clothes and, while doing so, dialed Julie Berkeley’s number. After about seven or eight rings, a magnetic male voice answered, “Did you receive the clothes?”
“Why would you give me clothes?” Lynn Newman was completely puzzled.
Julie Berkeley paused for a moment before responding, “A childhood friend of mine told me that it’s important to give a gift to the bride on the day of the wedding, since it’s a special occasion. But I’ve never given gifts to girls before. So I searched online, and it seems that clothes are what girls like most.”
Hearing his serious explanation, Lynn Newman imagined the president searching for tips online. She couldn’t help but laugh and teased, “Mr. Berkeley, if you keep doing this, I’ll think you’re trying to win me over.”
Julie Berkeley smiled faintly. “Lynn, you’re not misunderstanding me. I’m indeed trying to pursue you.” He had thought it through carefully. If he was going to marry Lynn Newman, then it wouldn’t be impossible for him to fall in love with her as well.
Lynn Newman didn’t know how to respond.
