Chapter 2

The first scream came from the back of the arena.

"She's cursed!"

For a heartbeat, it was only one frightened voice.

Then fear spread through the crowd like fire through dry grass.

"The Moon Goddess has never spoken to an Omega!"

"No!" another wolf shouted. "That wasn't the Moon Goddess. It was dark magic!"

"She's a witch!"

"Stay away from her!"

Panic swallowed the Sacred Moon Arena.

Lyra was still on one knee beside the Moon Stone.

Her chest rose and fell in uneven breaths. The silver light that had burst from the ancient altar was fading, but the words still echoed inside her mind.

The Alpha has rejected My Queen.

She hadn't imagined them.

Everyone had heard them.

Slowly, she looked up.

Hundreds of faces stared back at her.

Some were pale with fear.

Some looked confused.

Others...

Others looked at her as though she had become something they no longer recognized.

The silence shattered.

A woman pulled her little daughter behind her.

"Don't go near her."

An old warrior unsheathed his sword.

"What have you done?"

Lyra pushed herself to her feet.

Her legs felt weak.

"I..."

Her voice sounded distant, as though it belonged to someone else.

"I don't know."

"You expect us to believe that?"

One of the elders stepped forward, his face drained of color.

"You defiled the Moon Bond Ceremony."

"I didn't."

"You summoned that voice."

"I didn't summon anyone."

"The Moon Goddess has never spoken in the history of our pack."

"I know."

"Then explain what happened."

She looked at the glowing Moon Stone.

"I wish I could."

The answer was painfully honest.

She understood no more than they did.

The High Priest bent to retrieve his fallen staff.

His hands trembled so violently that he almost dropped it again.

When he finally straightened, he looked at Lyra for a long, silent moment.

Then he faced the elders.

"No one touches her."

The oldest elder stared at him.

"Have you lost your senses?"

"The Goddess has spoken."

"And that's exactly why she should be imprisoned."

"No."

The High Priest planted the end of his staff against the stone floor.

The sound echoed through the arena.

"Until we understand the Goddess's will, this young woman stands beneath the Moon's protection."

The crowd erupted.

"Protection?"

"She's dangerous."

"What if she's possessed?"

"What if she's cursed?"

Lyra looked from face to face.

Only minutes ago, these people had celebrated with her.

Some had embraced her.

Some had wished her happiness.

Now they shrank away as though she carried death itself.

The loneliness settled over her like winter.

Then Selena stepped forward.

She didn't raise her voice.

She didn't accuse.

She simply waited until the shouting began to fade.

"Please..."

Her tone was gentle enough to calm frightened children.

"We're all afraid."

She slipped her hand into Ryder's.

The gesture wasn't dramatic.

It was quiet.

Intentional.

Pain twisted inside Lyra's chest.

Selena looked toward her with soft, sympathetic eyes.

"No ordinary wolf could have caused the moon to change."

A murmur spread through the arena.

"No ordinary wolf could have awakened the ancient voice."

Selena lowered her gaze.

"I don't know what happened to Lyra."

She paused.

"But I think we should be careful until we do."

That was all.

She never called Lyra evil.

She never demanded punishment.

She didn't need to.

She had planted something far more dangerous.

Doubt.

Fear would do the rest.

Lyra met Selena's eyes.

For the first time, she understood.

This hadn't ended with the rejection.

It had only begun.

At last, Ryder spoke.

"Enough."

The single word silenced the arena.

His gaze settled on Lyra.

For the first time that night, certainty had vanished from his face.

He studied her as though he were seeing a stranger.

Then he asked quietly,

"What are you?"

The question struck deeper than his rejection.

Not...

Who are you?

But...

What are you?

Lyra felt her throat tighten.

"I don't know."

He searched her face.

Looking for anger.

Looking for deceit.

Looking for something that explained the impossible.

Instead...

He found only heartbreak.

Before anyone could speak again, a sharp voice rang across the arena.

"She speaks the truth!"

Every head turned.

The blind priestess had risen to her feet.

Two guards rushed toward her.

"Mother, please."

"You must sit."

She shoved them aside with surprising strength.

"You fools!"

Her voice echoed across the sacred grounds.

"You prayed your whole lives for the Goddess to answer."

She raised her weathered staff toward the silver moon.

"And when She finally speaks..."

A bitter laugh escaped her.

"...you choose fear instead of faith."

One of the elders stepped forward.

"Take her away."

"No!"

The old priestess struck her staff against the ground.

The crack rang through the arena.

"You should all be on your knees."

The elder frowned.

"You've lost your mind."

"I said..."

Her cloudy eyes swept across the crowd.

"...kneel before the Queen the Goddess has named."

Silence answered her.

Not a single wolf moved.

The elder let out a contemptuous snort.

"This nonsense has gone far enough."

He took one step toward Lyra.

Then stopped.

His expression changed.

His wolf had begun to whimper.

He frowned.

Another Alpha-ranked warrior tried to move forward.

His wolf refused.

Instead, it backed away.

A third warrior experienced the same thing.

Confusion spread across the arena.

"My wolf..."

"It won't move."

"It won't obey me."

For the first time that night, the High Priest looked at Lyra not with uncertainty...

But with awe.

A sharp crack broke the silence.

Everyone turned.

A small stone rolled across the arena floor before stopping at Lyra's feet.

For a moment, no one moved.

Then a second stone flew through the air.

It struck her shoulder.

The impact wasn't hard enough to injure her.

It was meant to humiliate her.

Lyra looked up.

A young wolf stood near the back of the crowd. His face was pale with fear, his hands trembling.

"Leave!"

His voice cracked.

"You brought this curse!"

Another stone came flying.

Then another.

One struck the ground beside her.

Another bounced across the altar.

A frightened voice cried out from somewhere in the crowd.

"Drive her out!"

The words spread with frightening speed.

"Drive her out!"

"Drive her out!"

"Drive her out!"

Fear had become a mob.

Ryder stepped forward.

"Enough!"

His voice thundered across the arena.

"Stand down!"

Some warriors obeyed.

Most did not.

The fear in their hearts had become stronger than their respect for their Alpha.

A woman rushed toward Lyra, clutching a burning torch.

Another man lowered a hunting spear.

Someone else shouted that the Moon Goddess had abandoned the pack.

The Sacred Moon Arena dissolved into chaos.

The High Priest hurried to stand in front of Lyra.

"No one touches her!"

He spread his arms as though his aging body alone could shield her.

A frightened warrior shoved him aside.

The old priest stumbled.

His silver staff slipped from his hands and struck the stone with a loud crack.

"High Priest!"

No one stopped to help him.

Lyra felt her heart sink.

This was no longer a ceremony.

It wasn't even a trial.

It had become a hunt.

"Lyra!"

Her adoptive father forced his way through the crowd.

His face was filled with panic.

He reached toward her.

Before he could get there, a warrior slammed into him.

He crashed onto the stone floor.

"Dad!"

Lyra instinctively ran toward him.

"Don't!"

Her mother's desperate scream cut through the noise.

"Run!"

"I can't leave you!"

"Run!"

Another stone landed only inches from her feet.

A spear struck the ground where she had been standing moments earlier.

Her mother shook her head, tears streaming down her face.

"If you stay..."

Her voice broke.

"They'll kill you."

Lyra's vision blurred.

She looked around one last time.

The home she had known since childhood had vanished.

Friends she had trusted now stared at her with fear.

Neighbors who had once welcomed her into their homes now wanted her gone.

The people she had spent years helping would not even meet her eyes.

She turned toward Ryder.

Just once.

He stood in the middle of the chaos, shouting orders that no one seemed willing to hear.

For one brief moment...

Their eyes met.

She saw it again.

Regret.

Real regret.

His lips parted as though he wanted to say something.

He never did.

It was too late.

Lyra turned away.

Then she ran.

Behind her came the roar of the crowd.

"Don't let her escape!"

"After her!"

"She can't leave the pack alive!"

The great gates of the Sacred Moon Arena stood open.

She ran through them without looking back.

Cold night air struck her face.

Tears blurred her vision.

She had no destination.

No plan.

Only one certainty.

If they caught her...

She would never leave alive.

Behind her, the pounding of boots grew louder.

The warriors were gaining on her.

Branches whipped against her arms as she ran deeper into the night.

Ahead, the dark outline of the Forbidden Forest rose beneath the silver moon.

Every child in the Blackthorn Pack had grown up hearing the same warning.

Never enter the Forbidden Forest after sunset.

Monsters lived there.

Spirits wandered there.

No wolf who entered alone ever returned the same.

Tonight...

It was the only place left that offered even the smallest chance of survival.

Without slowing, Lyra crossed the tree line.

The forest swallowed her whole.

The sounds of the arena disappeared behind her.

The warriors followed.

Then...

Everything changed.

The forest became unnaturally still.

No birds sang.

No insects chirped.

Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.

Only one sound remained.

Breathing.

Not hers.

Something else's.

Slow.

Heavy.

Powerful.

Watching.

A twig snapped somewhere ahead.

The pursuing warriors froze.

One by one, they turned toward the darkness between the ancient trees.

Two golden eyes opened.

High above the ground.

Far too high to belong to an ordinary wolf.

A massive black wolf stepped into the moonlight.

Its coat shimmered like polished obsidian.

Its shoulders towered over every werewolf present.

Its presence alone pressed against the air like an invisible mountain.

Yet it made no sound.

It did not growl.

It did not bare its teeth.

It simply looked at Lyra.

For reasons she could not explain...

She wasn't afraid.

The great wolf held her gaze for a long moment.

Then it walked past her.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Until it stood between Lyra and every warrior who had chased her into the forest.

Silence fell.

One warrior's sword slipped from his hand.

It struck the ground with a dull clang.

His lips trembled.

"That's..."

He couldn't finish.

Another warrior whispered the words for him.

"The King's Wolf."

No one moved.

No one dared.

Because every wolf in the Blackthorn Pack understood one terrifying truth.

If the King's Wolf stood before you...

The King himself could not be far behind.
