Chapter 3

The warrior who had spoken first staggered backward so abruptly that his boots scraped against the forest floor. Every trace of arrogance drained from his face as his eyes locked onto the enormous black wolf standing protectively before Lyra.

"The King's Wolf..."

His voice trembled, barely more than a frightened whisper.

"Run!"

Yet nobody moved.

It was as though the entire forest had forgotten how to breathe.

The enormous black wolf stood between Lyra and the warriors, its midnight-black fur gleaming beneath the silver moon. Its golden eyes shone with an unsettling brilliance, reflecting the moonlight like molten gold.

It didn't bare its fangs.

It didn't growl.

It didn't attack.

It simply watched them.

Somehow...

That silent gaze was far more terrifying than any roar.

The air grew unbearably heavy, pressing down on everyone present. Even the wind seemed unwilling to disturb the moment.

A young warrior swallowed hard before tightening his grip around his spear until his knuckles turned white.

"It doesn't matter whose wolf it is."

His voice cracked despite his attempt to sound brave.

"If we kill it, we can still take the girl."

"No!"

The oldest warrior lunged forward, grabbing the younger man's arm before he could take another step.

"Put the spear down."

"It's only one wolf."

"You fool."

The old warrior's throat bobbed as he swallowed.

"That's no ordinary wolf."

His weathered face had gone pale, and genuine fear flickered in his eyes.

The younger warrior hesitated.

His breathing quickened as uncertainty crept into his expression.

Before he could lower the spear...

The wolf looked at him.

That was all.

One glance.

Nothing more.

The warrior felt something ancient and overwhelming crash into him.

His fingers suddenly refused to obey him.

The spear slipped from his trembling hand.

It struck the ground with a dull thud that echoed through the unnatural silence.

His knees buckled beneath him.

"I..."

His breathing became ragged.

"My wolf..."

He clutched desperately at his chest as though trying to calm the frantic beast inside him.

"...it won't stop shaking."

Around him, every werewolf experienced the same terrifying sensation.

Inside each of them, their wolves had gone completely silent.

Then, one by one...

They lowered their heads.

Not in fear.

In submission.

No command had been spoken.

No force had been used.

Their instincts alone had recognized a power they could never challenge.

The realization spread through the Blackthorn warriors like wildfire.

This wasn't simply a stronger wolf.

This was one their very blood acknowledged as superior.

Lyra stared at the unbelievable scene in complete confusion.

Her heartbeat pounded painfully against her ribs.

None of this made sense.

"What..."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"...who are you?"

The wolf slowly turned toward her.

Unlike the fear it inspired in everyone else, its gaze upon her held no menace.

For a single heartbeat...

The world became impossibly still.

The sounds of insects disappeared.

The wind faded.

Even the rustling leaves seemed to freeze.

Then silver light burst from the wolf's body.

It wrapped around the massive beast like flowing moonlight.

The glow grew brighter.

Brighter.

Until Lyra instinctively raised an arm to shield her eyes.

Warm light spilled across the clearing, bathing every tree in shimmering silver.

When the light finally faded...

A man stood where the wolf had been.

He was tall enough to make every warrior surrounding him appear insignificant.

Power radiated from him without effort.

His long black coat fell almost to his boots, embroidered with intricate silver threads that shimmered each time the moonlight touched them.

His dark hair brushed his shoulders, moving gently with the night breeze.

A narrow scar crossed one eyebrow, lending a dangerous edge to an otherwise composed face.

His features were striking.

Calm.

Commanding.

Impossible to ignore.

But it was his eyes...

Those impossible golden eyes...

They were exactly the same as the wolf's.

No one spoke.

No one dared.

Even breathing felt like an interruption.

The man looked directly at Lyra.

Not with pity.

Not with curiosity.

Not as though she were a stranger.

His gaze carried something far deeper.

As if, after years of searching through endless darkness, he had finally found what he had refused to stop believing existed.

Behind him, movement stirred among the trees.

More figures emerged from the forest.

One.

Five.

Ten.

Twenty.

Each stepped into the moonlight with practiced precision.

Every one of them wore black armor engraved with a silver crescent moon that gleamed against the steel.

Royal guards.

The warriors of the Blackthorn Pack recognized the crest immediately.

One of them whispered, his voice filled with dread,

"The Lycan Kingdom..."

Another man's eyes widened before he immediately dropped to one knee.

"The King..."

Within seconds, every royal guard bowed their heads in perfect unison, their discipline flawless.

Lyra watched the scene unfold in stunned silence.

Of course.

They were greeting their ruler.

Thinking she was standing in the way, she quietly stepped aside.

But the man never even glanced at his guards.

Instead...

He walked straight toward her.

Each step was slow.

Measured.

Unhurried.

Every footfall seemed to echo through the silent clearing.

The forest had become so quiet that Lyra could hear the dry leaves crunching beneath his boots with every measured step.

He stopped only a few feet away.

Close enough for her to finally see him clearly.

Moonlight traced the sharp lines of his face, catching the faint silver embroidery woven into his black coat. His presence was overwhelming—not because he appeared threatening, but because everything around him seemed to bend to his quiet authority. Even the night itself felt as though it waited for his next move.

Lyra forced herself to lift her chin.

Despite the fear knotting her stomach, she refused to look away.

"I don't know who you are."

For the first time, something softened in the man's expression.

Not amusement.

Not disappointment.

Recognition.

"I know."

She frowned, confused by the certainty in his voice.

"I'm not who you think I am."

"I know."

"They're calling you King."

"They are."

"Then..."

Her brows knitted together.

"...why are you looking at me like that?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He slowly lowered himself onto one knee.

The movement was so unexpected that Lyra forgot how to breathe.

Her eyes widened.

Her heart skipped a beat.

For a long moment, she simply stared, unable to comprehend what she was seeing.

Behind him, every royal guard mirrored the gesture without hesitation.

Steel armor struck the earth.

One after another.

Like falling dominoes.

The synchronized sound echoed through the clearing before fading into stunned silence.

Even the commander of the royal guard bowed his head deeply.

No one questioned the order.

No one hesitated.

The warriors from the Blackthorn Pack stood rooted to the spot, their expressions frozen in utter disbelief.

One of them whispered hoarsely,

"The King..."

His companion finished the sentence in a voice filled with shock.

"...knelt."

Another could hardly force the words past his lips.

"Not to an Alpha."

"To her."

The words spread through the group like a ripple across still water.

Impossible.

Unthinkable.

The King of the Lycans had bowed before a woman no one recognized.

Lyra instinctively took a step backward.

Her pulse hammered in her ears.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"You've made a mistake."

The man slowly lifted his eyes to meet hers.

There was no uncertainty in them.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Only absolute conviction.

"For twelve years," he said quietly, "I searched every kingdom."

His voice was calm.

Steady.

The voice of a ruler who had never needed to shout to command absolute obedience.

"I searched abandoned temples."

His gaze never left hers.

"I searched forgotten ruins."

His words carried the weight of countless lonely journeys.

"I searched battlefields where history itself had been buried."

For just a fraction of a second, something resembling exhaustion flickered behind those golden eyes.

Not physical fatigue.

The weariness of someone who had refused to abandon hope despite years of failure.

He held her gaze.

"And tonight..."

A faint smile touched his lips.

One filled not with triumph, but quiet relief.

"...my search ends."

Lyra's thoughts tangled together.

Nothing he said made sense.

How could a king spend twelve years searching for someone like her?

She shook her head slowly.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

"I've never met you."

"No."

His answer came without hesitation.

"But I have been waiting for you."

Her heartbeat quickened.

Waiting?

How could someone she had never seen be waiting for her?

Questions flooded her mind faster than she could speak them.

Who was he?

Why did he know her?

Why had every werewolf submitted to him?

Why had a king knelt before her?

Before she could ask another question, the commander of the royal guard suddenly lifted his head, his sharp eyes scanning the dark sky beyond the treetops.

"Your Majesty."

The King didn't turn.

The commander's voice grew urgent.

"We're out of time."

A distant horn echoed through the forest.

Long.

Low.

Haunting.

Then another answered from farther away.

Then another.

The sounds rolled across the night like warnings carried on the wind.

The King's expression hardened instantly.

Every trace of warmth disappeared.

"They're already moving."

Lyra frowned.

"Who?"

Instead of answering, he slipped a hand inside his coat.

The Blackthorn warriors immediately tensed.

Several instinctively reached for their weapons.

Slowly...

He withdrew an old silver pendant.

Time had dulled the metal, but not its beauty.

At its center rested a delicate crescent moon surrounding a tiny blue stone that shimmered like captured starlight.

The moment Lyra looked at it...

The pendant began to glow.

Not brightly.

Softly.

Warmly.

As though it had awakened from a long sleep.

As though it recognized her.

The King's eyes never left hers.

"It still remembers."

Lyra stared at the glowing pendant.

A strange familiarity tightened around her chest.

"I've..."

She swallowed.

"I've seen that symbol before."

His expression sharpened.

"Where?"

She pressed a trembling hand against her temple.

"I..."

Pain exploded through her skull without warning.

A sharp gasp escaped her lips.

The forest disappeared.

Images flashed through her mind in broken fragments.

A woman dressed entirely in white.

Beautiful.

Smiling.

A throne woven from living silver branches.

Moonlight spilling across polished stone.

Children laughing beneath a glowing moon.

Warm hands reaching toward her.

Then...

Everything shattered.

Blood.

Fire.

Screams.

Someone running through the darkness.

Someone desperately clutching a baby against their chest.

The smell of smoke.

The roar of flames.

The desperate pounding of footsteps fading into the night.

The vision vanished as suddenly as it had come.

The world lurched violently.

Lyra stumbled.

Before she could hit the ground, strong arms caught her.

The King's grip was steady, supporting her effortlessly until she regained her balance.

She looked up at him, breathing hard.

Confusion.

Fear.

Pain.

All of it swirled inside her.

"What..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"...what's happening to me?"

He answered without taking his eyes off hers.

"The past..."

He paused.

As though choosing his words carefully.

"...has begun to remember you."

A chilling laugh drifted through the trees.

Soft.

Elegant.

It did not belong to anyone standing in the clearing.

It came from somewhere deep within the darkness.

The King's expression changed instantly.

The warmth vanished from his face.

His body shifted protectively as he stepped in front of Lyra without a second thought.

One hand settled on the hilt of the sword at his side.

The royal guards reacted at once.

Steel sang through the night as every weapon left its sheath in one flawless, practiced motion.

The clearing erupted with deadly tension.

Every instinct in Lyra screamed that something terrible was about to happen.

Then a woman's voice echoed through the forest.

"So..."

It was elegant.

Cold.

Almost amused.

"The Queen really is alive."

The King's reply was immediate.

Sharp.

Unwavering.

"Protect her."

The trees exploded as dozens of masked assassins dropped from the branches above.
