Chapter 4

The first assassin never reached Lyra.

A flash of silver sliced through the darkness so quickly that it was almost impossible to follow.

For one impossible second, the masked figure remained perfectly still.

His body swayed once.

Then he collapsed onto the forest floor with a heavy thud, his weapon slipping from lifeless fingers.

Silence rippled through the clearing.

The King's sword was already back in its sheath.

Lyra hadn't even seen him draw it.

She blinked, trying to understand what had just happened.

One moment his hands had been empty.

The next...

One assassin was dead.

Her breath caught in her throat.

No one should have been able to move that fast.

The remaining assassins exchanged uneasy glances.

For the first time, uncertainty crept into their ranks.

Then their leader laughed.

The sound was low and mocking, cutting through the tense silence.

"So the stories are true."

He stepped out from the shadows, dressed entirely in black. His clothing blended almost perfectly with the darkness, making it seem as though the night itself had given him form.

Only his cold blue eyes were visible beneath the mask covering his face.

They held neither fear nor hesitation.

Only cruel amusement.

"The Lycan King really does protect her."

King Lucian's expression never changed.

His golden eyes remained calm, unreadable, fixed on the man before him.

"You have one chance."

His voice was quiet.

Steady.

Yet it carried effortlessly across the battlefield.

"Leave."

The assassin tilted his head ever so slightly, as though genuinely considering the offer.

"And if we refuse?"

Lucian took one slow step forward.

The movement was unhurried.

Controlled.

Yet every warrior in the clearing instinctively stiffened.

The pressure radiating from him became almost suffocating.

"Then your families will never know where you died."

The words were spoken without anger.

Without threat.

As though he were simply stating an unavoidable fact.

The forest fell silent.

Even the wind seemed to stop.

Leaves that had been drifting lazily through the air settled onto the ground.

One of the younger assassins swallowed nervously.

His grip tightened around his sword.

"Captain..."

A flicker of doubt crossed his eyes.

The leader raised a hand, silencing him immediately.

"No."

His icy gaze never left Lucian.

"We finish what we came here to do."

Slowly, deliberately, he lifted his sword and pointed its gleaming blade directly at Lyra.

"Kill the girl."

The forest erupted.

The clash of steel shattered the silence.

Royal Guards surged forward as one, meeting the assassins in a violent storm of flashing blades and flying sparks.

The ringing of metal echoed through the trees.

Orders were shouted.

Weapons collided.

The peaceful clearing transformed into a battlefield within seconds.

Lyra stumbled backward in shock as two fighters slammed into the tree beside her.

The impact sent bark exploding into the air.

She barely managed to keep her balance before scrambling farther away.

Her pulse raced wildly.

She had never seen warriors move this fast.

Their movements blurred together until she could hardly tell friend from foe.

One Royal Guard ducked beneath an assassin's slash with astonishing precision before spinning behind him. His elbow crashed into the man's ribs with enough force to steal his breath.

Before the assassin could recover, his sword was ripped from his grasp and sent spinning across the forest floor.

Another guard blocked three consecutive strikes so quickly that the sharp clang of steel sounded almost like a single note.

With a swift twist of his wrist, he forced his opponent off balance and drove him backward.

The battle spread through the trees.

Branches snapped.

Leaves rained down.

The air filled with the scent of fresh earth and cold steel.

Yet amid the chaos...

Lucian remained exactly where he stood.

Watching.

Waiting.

Almost...

Bored.

His calm unsettled Lyra more than the fighting itself.

It was as though none of the assassins surrounding them posed the slightest threat.

Then three masked figures broke away from the battle.

Instead of engaging the Royal Guards, they rushed straight toward Lyra.

Their intention was unmistakable.

She was the target.

Fear seized her.

She turned and ran.

Her boots slipped across loose leaves as desperate breaths escaped her lips.

A sharp whistle split the air.

A knife flew past her shoulder so closely that she felt the wind from its blade brush against her skin.

It buried itself deep inside the trunk of a nearby tree with a heavy thunk.

She flinched.

Another assassin lunged toward her, his sword already descending.

Instinct told her she wouldn't be fast enough.

Before the attacker could reach her...

Lucian moved.

She never saw him leave his place.

One heartbeat, he stood nearly ten steps away.

The next...

He was standing between Lyra and the assassin as though he had always been there.

The attacker froze.

His blue eyes widened behind the mask.

"How..."

The question never received an answer.

Lucian's fist drove forward with effortless precision.

The impact sounded like thunder.

The assassin's body lifted completely off the ground before hurtling backward.

He crashed through a fallen log, splintering the thick wood into jagged pieces before rolling across the forest floor.

He didn't get up.

Silence lingered for the briefest moment around them.

Even nearby combatants stole stunned glances toward the fallen assassin.

Lyra stared at Lucian with wide, disbelieving eyes.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly.

"You..."

She searched for words that refused to come.

Nothing she had witnessed since entering this forest should have been possible.

Yet he had done it all as though it required no effort.

Lucian glanced back at her only briefly.

His expression remained composed, but there was unmistakable resolve in his golden eyes.

"Stay behind me."

"I don't even know who you are."

Lyra's voice was barely audible beneath the sounds of battle.

The clash of steel echoed through the forest, but somehow the question felt louder than every sword strike around them.

She searched his face, desperate for something that would explain why a king risked everything to protect a stranger.

Why he had knelt before her.

Why everyone around him seemed convinced she was someone she had never been.

Lucian met her gaze without wavering.

"You will."

His answer was as calm as ever.

Certain.

As though he wasn't offering reassurance, but stating an inevitable truth.

Lyra let out a frustrated breath.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

For the first time since the battle had begun, the corner of Lucian's mouth lifted into the faintest smile.

It was brief.

Almost imperceptible.

Yet somehow, despite the chaos surrounding them, it softened the sharp authority that defined him.

"I know."

Another assassin burst through the fighting, charging straight toward them with his sword raised high.

His footsteps pounded across the forest floor.

His blade flashed beneath the moonlight.

Without even turning completely, Lucian reached out and caught the man's wrist in one swift motion.

The assassin's eyes widened.

A sharp twist.

A sickening crack.

The man's fingers opened involuntarily.

His sword slipped from his grasp and struck the ground harmlessly.

Before the attacker could recover, Lucian delivered a precise strike to the back of his neck.

The assassin collapsed instantly.

Unconscious.

Not dead.

The battlefield raged on around them, yet that single detail caught Lyra's attention.

She looked from the unconscious man back to Lucian.

"You spared him."

Lucian's gaze briefly followed the fallen assassin before returning to the battle.

"He was following orders."

There was no pride in his voice.

No self-congratulation.

Simply quiet conviction.

To him, there was a difference between those who chose evil and those who were merely used by it.

Before Lyra could respond, hurried footsteps approached through the fighting.

The commander of the Royal Guard stopped before them.

His black armor was stained with blood.

Some of it belonged to his enemies.

Some of it did not.

His breathing remained controlled despite the battle still unfolding around them.

"Your Majesty."

Lucian lifted his eyes.

"The eastern line is secure."

"The western?"

The commander hesitated only briefly.

"Three escaped."

Lucian's expression darkened.

A dangerous silence settled over him.

"They'll report back."

"They already know."

The commander lowered his voice, ensuring only Lucian and Lyra could hear.

"They've confirmed her identity."

Lyra frowned.

"My identity?"

Her eyes moved from one man to the other.

Neither answered.

Their silence frightened her more than any explanation could have.

Instead, Lucian turned fully toward her.

His golden eyes remained steady.

"Can you walk?"

She nodded uncertainly.

"I think so."

"We're leaving."

Her confusion deepened.

"Leaving where?"

"Somewhere they cannot reach you."

She shook her head almost immediately.

"I can't."

For the first time, genuine surprise flickered across Lucian's face.

"My parents."

The words caught in her throat.

Her voice trembled despite her efforts to remain composed.

"They're still at the pack."

Images of home flooded her mind.

Her parents.

The people who had raised her.

Whatever had happened tonight, she couldn't simply disappear and leave them behind.

"If I leave..."

Her voice broke.

She couldn't finish the sentence.

She didn't need to.

Lucian understood.

"They'll use them against me."

He nodded once.

"They will."

The simple confirmation tightened the knot already forming in her chest.

"Then I can't abandon them."

The commander stepped forward immediately.

"We'll send guards."

Lucian looked at him.

His answer came without hesitation.

"Not guards."

Recognition flashed across the commander's face.

He understood exactly what the King meant.

"I'll send the Shadow Company."

Lyra frowned.

"The Shadow Company?"

Lucian answered before the commander could.

"Our best soldiers."

His voice carried quiet confidence.

"They protect people the world cannot afford to lose."

Lyra lowered her eyes.

After everything that had happened, those words felt impossible to accept.

"I don't know if I deserve that."

Lucian studied her for a long moment.

His expression softened with something that resembled quiet admiration.

"That," he said gently, "is exactly why you do."

His words settled deep inside her.

No one had ever looked at her the way he did.

Not because of what she could offer.

Not because of what she represented.

Simply because he believed she was worth protecting.

Before Lyra could answer, a deep rumble rolled across the forest.

It wasn't thunder.

It came from somewhere far beneath the earth.

The ground trembled beneath their feet.

Loose stones skipped across the soil.

The trees shivered as though an invisible force had passed through their roots.

Every wolf in the clearing lifted its head at once.

Royal wolves.

Pack wolves.

Even the wounded.

Each of them stared toward the distant horizon.

Then...

From somewhere beyond the forest...

A bell rang.

The ancient sound rolled across the night.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Lucian slowly closed his eyes.

A single word escaped his lips.

"No..."

The commander turned sharply toward the horizon.

His face had gone pale.

"The Temple Bells."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"They've awakened."

Lyra looked between them anxiously.

"What does that mean?"

Neither man answered.

Instead...

Another sound followed.

Not a bell.

A voice.

Ancient.

Powerful.

It seemed to rise from the earth itself.

It wasn't spoken through the air.

It echoed inside their souls.

Not everyone heard it.

The Royal Guards continued fighting.

The assassins showed no reaction.

Only Lucian.

Only Lyra.

Only the oldest priest traveling with the royal guards.

The elderly priest suddenly staggered.

His weathered face drained of color.

Then he dropped heavily onto both knees.

His hands shook uncontrollably as tears gathered in his aged eyes.

With trembling lips, he whispered words that had not been spoken in a thousand years.

"The prophecy..."

Lucian slowly lifted his eyes toward the silver moon hanging above the forest.

The priest continued, his voice filled with awe and fear.

"The Queen of Shadows shall awaken beneath a silver sky.

Her heartbeat shall awaken the ancient temples.

Her tears shall summon kings.

Her enemies shall hunt her.

Her allies shall die for her.

The Alpha who rejected her shall lose everything he sought to protect.

Only when the Queen chooses between the Crown and the Bond shall the fate of the werewolf world be decided."

The final words faded into the night.

The forest fell silent once more.

Even the battle seemed distant for a single breath.

Lyra's heart pounded so violently she thought everyone around her could hear it.

She stared at the priest in disbelief.

"I don't understand."

Lucian looked at her.

There was sorrow in his eyes now.

And something else.

Acceptance.

"I know."

He took a slow breath.

"But from this moment on..."

His voice became quiet.

"...every king, every Alpha, every traitor, and every hunter in the werewolf world will be searching for you."

The weight of his words settled over the clearing.

Lyra felt as though the world beneath her feet had shifted forever.

Then a horn echoed in the distance.

Long.

Urgent.

Another answered.

Then another.

The commander's face drained of color.

He turned sharply toward the approaching sound.

"Your Majesty..."

Lucian's expression hardened.

"What is it?"

The commander swallowed before speaking.

"Our scouts have returned."

"How many?"

The commander looked at Lyra for a long moment before answering.

His voice was grim.

"Not one army."

He drew a slow, steady breath.

"Three."
