Chapter 11 The Unexpected Consequences
Kim's mouth snapped shut.
Damien stepped in front of her. "No, no, no. You don't get to threaten her. You don't get to…" He pointed at Ethan. “…this guy is a fraud. He's running a scam. He got arrested yesterday. I watched them put him in handcuffs. I saw the news coverage. He was trying to steal from the Hart Group."
The owner raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?"
"It is so." Damien folded his arms triumphantly. "So either he stole that card from prison…"
"Prison?" The owner's voice was dangerously quiet. "You believe a man can steal a Centurion card from prison?"
Damien faltered. Just slightly. "Well…he could have…someone gave it to him…"
"Who, Mr. Cross? Who would give a man fresh from incarceration a card that requires a seven-figure minimum balance?"
"I don't know! He's a con artist! He probably bought a fake online!"
But the owner's voice was calm. "Appearance is not proof of identity, Mr. Cross. The card is proof. The authorization is proof. And the fact that Mr. Sterling personally called me is proof."
Damien's mouth opened, closed, and opened again.
"This is a prank," he finally said. "Some kind of elaborate prank. Kim…" He grabbed her arm. "Tell them. Tell them it's a prank."
Kim looked at Ethan. At the bruises, his torn clothes, and the black card in his hand.
"I..." She swallowed. "I saw him before the arrest. At the restaurant. He was…he was picking food out of the garbage."
The owner's expression didn't change. "People in difficult circumstances often do what they must to survive. That doesn't diminish their worth."
"His mother is still in a coma," Damien said desperately. "She's been in a coma for months.”
The owner turned to Ethan. "Is this true, Mr. Sterling?"
Ethan felt his face burn. "Yes. My mother is in the hospital. She's been there for three months. I couldn't... I couldn't afford her treatment."
The owner nodded slowly. "And now?"
Ethan blinked. "What?"
"Now. Can you afford her treatment?"
Ethan looked down at the black card in his hand. "I... I don't know."
The owner smiled. It was the first genuine expression Ethan had seen on his face. "Then you have not yet discovered what that card can do, Mr. Sterling. I assure you, your mother's medical bills are no longer a concern."
Damien made a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob. "This is…this is impossible. You can't just…he can't just become a Sterling overnight. That's not how life works."
The owner turned to face him. "Mr. Cross, I'm going to ask you one more time. And I want you to think very carefully before you answer. Are you aware that you could get into trouble with all of these?"
Damien's face was white. His hands were shaking.
"I..." He swallowed hard. "I don't believe it. I won't believe it. There's been a mistake. There has to be a mistake."
The owner sighed. Sounding disappointed.
"The Sterling family hasn't announced anything publicly," he said calmly. "So how would you expect to see it on the news?"
Damien's mouth opened and closed again. No word came out. For the first time, he wasn't confident in his words.
Then Kim pulled at his arm. "Damien…"
"No." He shook her off. "No, this is a trick. It has to be. He's working with someone. He's pretending. This is all…"
The owner raised his hand. Two security guards came out.
"Remove this man from my store," the owner said quietly. "And his companion. They are banned. Permanently."
The guards stepped forward.
"You can't do this!" Damien's voice rose to a near-shriek. "I've been a client here for years! I'm a VIP!"
"You were a VIP." The owner's voice was ice. "Now you're nothing."
The guards seized Damien's arms.
"Wait…" Kim's face was pale. "Please…I didn't do anything…"
"You defended him," the owner said flatly. "That is enough."
The manager stepped forward. "Sir, I think…"
"You think?" The owner turned to face him. "You allowed a client to be publicly humiliated based on appearance. You sided with a bully over an innocent man. You approved of this behavior?"
The manager's face went red. "I didn't…I just…"
"I asked you a question."
The manager stammered. "Damien identified him as a criminal. I thought…"
"You thought." The owner's voice was dangerously soft. "So your company policy is to humiliate customers before verifying payment?"
The manager went silent.
"The answer is no," the owner continued. "That is not company policy. That is your failure as a manager. Effective immediately, you are terminated."
The manager's face went white. "You can't…"
"I can. And I am." The owner turned to the sales associate who had first approached Ethan. "And you. You're terminated as well. Effective immediately."
She gasped. "But I…"
"You judged a customer by his clothes." The owner's voice was flat. "That is not how we operate. Security will escort you both out."
The guards arrived. They flanked the manager and the sales associate, their expressions went blank.
"Please," the manager begged. "Please, Mr. Sterling…" He turned to Ethan. "Tell him. Tell him to reconsider. I didn't mean any harm. I was just doing my job."
Ethan stared at him.
He remembered the cell, the beating, the guard who had thrown his dinner on the ground and made him eat it like an animal and the feeling of being judged, condemned, and dehumanized.
He said nothing.
The security guards led the manager and sales associate away. Both were crying and begging.
Ethan watched them go. He didn't feel satisfied.
For the first time in his life.
The owner turned to Ethan. His expression was apologetic again.
"Mr. Sterling, I cannot express how deeply sorry I am for this experience. If there's anything, anything at all…I can do to make it right…"
Ethan shook his head. "You already did."
The owner blinked. "I... I did?"
"You fired them," Ethan said quietly. "You believed me. That's enough."
The owner bowed again. "I will have our finest tailor prepare a selection of suits for you. Compliments of the store. Please, accept them as a token of our sincerest apologies."
"I don't need…"
"Please, Mr. Sterling." The owner's voice was earnest. "I insist. It would honor me greatly."
Ethan hesitated. Then nodded.
"Okay," he said. "Thank you."
The owner's face lit up with relief. "Excellent. I'll have everything prepared immediately." He paused. "If you'll wait just a few moments…"
Just when Damien is about to leave in frustration…Every employee in the boutique suddenly stands perfectly straight.
Damien pointed at Ethan and laughed.
“I don't know how you managed to manipulate these people, but it will never work on me.” he paused, stared at him and shook his head before continuing. “Chairman Sterling will never know who you are.”
Before Ethan could answer, the boutique doors slid open.
Someone whispered, shaking.
“Is that…oh my God.”
Every employee instantly stood up straighter.
The owner stared toward the entrance and froze. His face was drained of color.
Ethan slowly turned.
Damien turned too.
The smile on Damien’s face disappeared.
