Chapter 3
Eloise Rhodes waited patiently outside on the balcony, growing increasingly annoyed. She simply couldn’t understand how a woman who couldn’t even speak properly could dare to dream of finding a wealthy man. It was completely absurd.
Just as he was about to lose his temper, Selina Thorpe finally mustered the courage to speak up. Her voice was filled with hope: “Sister Qi, I’d like you to help me find a wealthy unmarried man. Not for myself, but for my sister.”
Eloise Rhodes was momentarily stunned, then let out a sneer. So it wasn’t for herself, but for her sister? But no matter who it was for, women who were only interested in marrying into wealthy families didn’t deserve sympathy.
Maddix Rhodes wore a knowing smile, his gaze tinged with mischief as he looked at Selina Thorpe. “Xiaoqing, I thought you’d finally decided to find yourself a boyfriend. Turns out it’s for your sister.”
Under Maddix Rhodes’s gaze, Selina Thorpe’s face turned completely red. Even the tips of her ears turned pink. She wished she could hide somewhere. “Sis Qi, please stop teasing me. I just want to find a reliable man for my sister. She really wants to marry into a wealthy family. I’m afraid she’ll be deceived.”
Madix Rhodes nodded. She understood Selina Thorpe’s thoughts all too well. “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of this.” She pulled Selina Thorpe beside her and asked with a smile, “So, what are your requirements for your future ‘brother-in-law’?”
When the requirements were mentioned, Selena Thorp immediately perked up. The shyness disappeared from her face, and her eyes lit up. She pointed her finger and listed the requirements carefully: “First, he must be wealthy—preferably a wealthy businessman who can ensure my sister leads a good life. Second, he should be around 1.8 meters tall, not too short. Third, he must have good character and be gentle by nature, with no tendency to be unfaithful. Fourth, the more handsome, the better. Fifth, his age shouldn’t exceed thirty. Sixth, and most importantly, he must be devoted and kind to my sister. Ideally, he should be the kind of man who does whatever my sister says!”
In the end, Selena Sopp couldn’t help but laugh herself. Her cheeks turned red, making her look extremely cute.
Maddix Rhodes laughed uncontrollably, slapping the table and saying, “My dear Qing, you’re not just looking for a brother-in-law—you’re looking for a god! And you complain about your wife controlling you? Do you really think wealthy young men just sit around doing nothing?”
Selena Thorp also nodded with a smile. “I know the request is a bit much, but I just want my sister to be happy. I don’t want her to be bullied by anyone.”
The two of them chatted and laughed, completely unaware that outside on the balcony, Eloise Rhodes’s face had turned as dark as the bottom of a pot.
1.8 meters tall? Handsome? Under 30 years old? Loyal and submissive to his wife?
Elodie Rhodes grew angrier and angrier. This woman’s demands were practically tailor-made for him. Yet, with her seemingly ordinary appearance just now, how dare she be so picky? When in his life had Elodie Rhodes ever been treated with such disdain?
Once again, he peeked through the gaps in the curtains to observe Selina Thorpe. She was less than 1.6 meters tall, had a plain figure and unattractive looks. She didn’t even have any makeup on. The white coat she wore was so faded that it appeared almost white. How could a woman like her dare to make demands on a wealthy young man like him?
“A shameless and greedy woman.” Eloise Rhodes spat out those words in a hushed tone, her disgust growing even stronger. He had originally wanted to play along with her for a while, but it seemed clear that unless he made her understand her place, she’d continue to think she was something special.
Selena Thorne suddenly felt a chill over her body, as if someone was staring at her. Instinctively, she turned her head toward the balcony. But there was nothing there except for the drawn curtains.
“What’s wrong?” Maddix Rhodes noticed her unusual behavior and asked, puzzled.
“Nothing much. Maybe the air conditioner is set too low.” Selena Thorp shook her head, trying to suppress the unease in her heart. She continued, “Sis Qi, you really must help me find her. My sister’s happiness depends on you.”
“Don’t worry, leave it to me.” Maddix Rhodes patted her hand. “This Saturday night, I’ll be hosting a small party at my house. I’ll invite plenty of wealthy young men who meet your requirements. Bring your sister along, and let her pick one herself.”
“Really? Thank you so much, Sister Qi!” Selina Thorpe eagerly took Maddix Rhodes’s hand, her face filled with gratitude.
“By the way, Sister Qi, can I bring my sister with me?” Selina Thorpe suddenly remembered something and asked carefully.
Maddix Rhodes nodded with a smile. “Of course. It was originally organized for your sister. If we’re not taking her, then who are we taking?”
Selena Thorp smiled sheepishly, stood up, and bowed to Maddix Rhodes. “Thank you, Qie Jie. I’ll go back to my post now. I’ll definitely bring my sister there on Saturday night.”
After saying that, she turned around and quickly left the office, fearing that Maddix Rhodes might change his mind.
As soon as Selina Thorpe left, the balcony curtains were flung open. Eloise Rhodes entered, looking furious. With one kick, she sent the stool on which Selina had sat to the side. Her tone was full of displeasure: “Auntie, please don’t include me in this. I certainly don’t want anything to do with that woman.”
Madix Rhodes, seeing him so annoyed, actually felt relieved. He smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I have no intention of introducing you to her.”
Hearing these words, Eloise Rhodes felt a little less angry. But then, she thought something wasn’t right. What did her aunt mean by that? Did he really not deserve that woman?
“Auntie, what’s with that expression of yours?” Eloise Rhodes frowned, her tone full of disdain. “A woman like her—no beauty, no figure, no substance at all. How could I possibly be interested in her? I just don’t want to be bothered by such greedy women.”
Maddix Rhodes gave him a serious look and said sternly, “Eloise, don’t underestimate her. Selina Thorpe is a good girl—kind, serious, and responsible. She’s far better than those pampered, silly women around you. She deserves a better man, not someone like you, who’s such a playboy.”
“Am I promiscuous?” Eloise Rhodes was displeased. “Auntie, what I do is considered ‘fondling’ at most, not promiscuity! I’ve never forced any woman or deceived her feelings. I’m far better than those men who seem honest on the surface but cheat behind everyone’s back!”
Maddix Rhodes didn’t bother arguing with him. He waved his hand and said, “Enough, stop talking about this. By the way, your grandfather asked you to come personally so that he could tell you: you must attend the party this Saturday night. No excuses for being absent.”
Eloise Rhodes was stunned. “Grandpa wants me to attend the party? Why? Doesn’t he usually hate it when I go to boring events like this?”
Maddix Rhodes smiled and said nothing more. “Your grandfather has his reasons. Just do as he says.” In her heart, she thought that if Eloise found out that her grandfather had invited him to the party because a fortune-teller said he would meet his soulmate there, she would probably go crazy with anger.
Eloise Rhodes frowned, filled with confusion. But he knew he couldn’t ignore what his grandfather said. “I understand,” he replied impatiently. Yet inwardly, he resolved that on Saturday’s party, he would definitely go and see what kind of sister that woman, who was only interested in finding rich men, would bring along.
He really wanted to see what kind of tricks these two sisters would come up with. If the younger sister was just as greedy and ignorant as her older sister, then he wouldn’t mind playing a little trick on them. He wanted to make them understand that it wasn’t easy to get into the wealthy elite class, and that rich people weren’t easy to manipulate.
At this moment, Selena Thorpe had no idea that Eloise Rhodes had taken a dislike to her. She was happily calling Adrian Thorpe to share the good news with him, completely unaware that Saturday’s party would become a turning point in the fates of both her and Eloise Rhodes.
