Chapter 4 Who Is Your Employer?

Emily froze for a moment, thinking: Is it Adam?

Where would he find the time to worry about her affairs? Right now, his entire heart was already tied to Vivian.

Even if he received a critical condition notice about her, he'd probably suspect she was deliberately playing tricks to compete for his attention.

A forced and weary smile tugged at the corner of her mouth as she said coldly, "Him? He doesn't need to know about my business."

Jacob opened his mouth, but the words on his lips turned into a sigh. "Alright, I'll handle it."

"Thank you."

Emily nodded, avoiding Jacob's slightly pitying and sympathetic gaze. She took one last look at this familiar company, then silently turned and left.

This return to Silverpine City was the result of careful consideration.

All her persistence had ultimately become a joke, but fortunately she'd woken up in time, before sinking any deeper.

She shook her head lightly, casting away those troubling thoughts.

Pulling her coat a bit tighter, she stepped into the cold wind.

……

Early the next morning, Emily woke with a start from her sleep. She opened her loudly ringing phone and saw an unfamiliar number.

She rubbed her temples and answered somewhat wearily, "Hello, who is this?"

"Hello, is this Emily? We have something for you that requires your personal collection."

"What is it?"

"Sorry, I'm not sure."

Emily was silent for a moment, then had to agree. "I see, just bring it over."

"Sorry Ms. Hart, could I trouble you to come out and sign for it yourself? It's not convenient for me to go in."

So troublesome?

Emily had no choice but to get up, dress properly, and go out.

She'd finally gotten a good night's sleep yesterday and thought she could sleep in a bit longer.

She'd forgotten to ask on the phone who was sending her something.

Could it be Jack? That didn't make sense, since she was about to go back soon anyway.

Since she couldn't figure it out, she stopped thinking about it. After getting ready, Emily came downstairs and sure enough saw a man in a suit not far away, looking at her with a bright smile.

"Are you Ms. Hart?"

Emily nodded, her gaze falling on the gift box in the man's hands.

An exquisite red velvet gift box, decorated with luxurious crystal clasps and a familiar logo—Emily recognized at a glance that this was the Starry Sky dress from Elysium.

She was instantly stunned. This dress should still be abroad, and she'd only just ordered it yesterday. Even with her friendship with Lina, it couldn't possibly arrive this quickly.

"This is the Starry Sky dress? How could it arrive so fast?"

She quickly asked.

"This is a gift my employer specially sent to Ms. Hart, delivered this morning via private jet."

The man handed the gift box to Emily, but she didn't take it.

"Who is your employer?"

"Noah."

So it was him.

With Noah's status, he would actually pay attention to her affairs, specially have someone retrieve this, and have it delivered to her first thing in the morning.

This thoughtfulness was truly rare.

Emily's heart was suddenly touched.

"I've delivered the gift, Ms. Hart, please accept it. If you have anything to say, you can wait until you meet Mr. Stone in person."

The man extended his hand, looking at Emily with a smile.

But Emily looked hesitant—she hadn't mentally prepared herself for whether or not to accept this gift.

"Isn't this Emily? What are you doing here so early in the morning?"

A sarcastic voice rang out. Emily's brows furrowed slightly. She turned around and saw Vivian.

"What business is it of yours? And what are you doing here?"

Vivian laughed. "Naturally, I'm here to see Adam. Emily, I know you don't like me, but Adam and I are childhood sweethearts who grew up together. That bond isn't something just anyone can destroy."

Emily didn't even spare her a glance, taking the gift box and preparing to leave.

Who would have thought—she hadn't even had a chance to deliver the gift she'd brought, and she'd already received an unexpected present.

Thinking of this, her mood became even more complex.

Vivian's gaze also fell on the box in the man's hands, and her eyes immediately lit up.

"Is this the Starry Sky dress? Perfect, I'll take it right over and return it to Jennifer!"

As Vivian spoke, she actually walked forward, trying to grab it directly.

Emily immediately blocked her, raising an eyebrow. "Is it yours? How dare you touch it."

Hearing this, Vivian immediately complained indignantly, "If you hadn't bumped into me and dirtied Jennifer's dress, would I need to return it to her? It was clearly your fault, but you're making someone else pay. That's too much."

"I've seen people shift blame before, but I've never seen anyone as shameless as you."

Emily sneered coldly. "What you owe, you'll pay. Don't even think about escaping it. As for this dress, don't even dream about it."

"You! Don't go too far! This dress was supposed to be returned to Jennifer anyway. What's wrong with me taking it over now!"

Vivian clenched her fists in anger, resentment flashing in her eyes.

"Being generous with other people's things is exactly the problem. Also, this dress has nothing to do with you. Stop your wishful thinking. This is mine, and you don't even deserve to touch it."

Emily's gaze was cold, her presence imposing.

At this moment, Vivian actually felt some pressure, her expression changing abruptly.

Her face twisted, and she was about to curse angrily when her eyes suddenly flashed. She put on a pitiful appearance. "Emily, it's all my fault. I know you don't like me being too close to Adam. I'll be more careful in the future."

"But Jennifer comes from a wealthy family. If we don't return the dress to her quickly, what if she takes it out on Adam?"

Emily was getting impatient. "What does that have to do with me?"

"Emily!"

Behind her came Adam's slightly angry voice. Emily wasn't surprised at all.

Perhaps the old her would have felt pain, but now she only felt calm.

Vivian quickly walked over and gently took Adam's arm.

"Adam, don't blame Emily. It's all my fault. Emily worked so hard to get this dress—I shouldn't have asked her to give it away."

"This isn't your fault." Adam immediately comforted Vivian gently, his tone tender, as if speaking loudly would frighten the Vivian in his arms.

Then he raised his head, his expression full of impatience. "Emily, can you stop making a scene? Hand the dress to Vivian right now so she can return it. You should go too and apologize to Jennifer."

"Vivian is doing this for your own good. Why are you making things difficult for her? When did you become so petty?"

Opening and closing his mouth with nothing but accusations against her.

Emily wasn't angry, she just found it funny.

Funny that she'd been so blind as to fall for someone like this.

"I already said." Emily's voice was flat, yet carried an inexplicable authority. At this moment, she seemed somehow different from before. "Whatever Vivian owes, not a penny less."

Hearing this, Vivian's eyes immediately reddened, looking like she was about to cry but holding back—a sight that aroused pity.

Especially for Adam, who already had feelings for her.

Adam glared at Emily resentfully, seemingly unable to understand why she, who had always been gentle and considerate, had become so unreasonable.

He stared at her through gritted teeth, his voice containing barely suppressed anger. "Emily, have you gone crazy over money?!"
