Chapter 3 THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Bella had lost the inability to sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the photograph, the woman's face, the resemblance, the strange conversation, the mysterious man and the fear in Lisa's voice.
Something was happening inside Brown Mansion. Something dangerous. And somehow, she was at the center of it.
The next morning, Bella woke up exhausted. Dark clouds hung outside the mansion windows. The weather mirrored her mood. As she walked downstairs toward the kitchen, she noticed something unusual. Everyone seemed tense. Staff members whispered among themselves. Some looked nervous. Others avoided eye contact entirely.
"What happened?" Bella asked one of the maids.
The woman hesitated then lowered her voice.
"Someone broke into Mr. Brown's private office last night."
Bella froze. "What?"
The maid nodded.
"Nothing was stolen." That somehow sounded worse.
Bella remembered Ethan's warning about an information leak. A cold chill ran down her spine. Someone was definitely hiding something.
Meanwhile, James sat behind his desk. His jaw was clenched. Security footage played repeatedly on the monitor. A dark figure moving through the hallway, a shadow and nothing more. The intruder had avoided every camera angle. Almost professionally.
His office door opened. Ethan stepped inside.
"Any progress?"
James shook his head. "No."
Ethan frowned. "This isn't random."
"I know." James stared at the screen.
"The person knew exactly where to go."
Ethan's expression darkened.
"You think it's connected to the company leak?"
James nodded slowly.
Someone inside his mansion was working against him. Someone who knew him very well enough to gather so much personal and confidential information against him. The question was who?
Later that afternoon, Bella was cleaning the mansion library when something slipped from an old book. A photograph. Her breath caught. It was the same woman. The woman from last night. The woman who looked exactly like her. With trembling hands, Bella picked it up. The back contained a handwritten message.
For my daughter.
Love always.
Elena.
Bella's heart skipped.
Elena. Her mother's name.
The photograph slipped from her fingers.
“Impossible”, She gasped.
Her mother had never mentioned the Brown family. Never.
So why was her picture hidden inside Brown Mansion? Before Bella could think further, a voice startled her.
"What are you doing?"
Bella spun around. James stood at the doorway.
She quickly hid the photo. But it was too late. His sharp eyes had already noticed.
"What was that?"
"Nothing."
James crossed the room.
"Show me."
Bella hesitated. Something told her not to. Something told her the photograph mattered a lot.
"I said show me."
Reluctantly, she handed it over. The moment James saw the image, his face lost all color. His whole demeanor changed, that's even Bella got scared. She stared intensely at him and for the first time since meeting him, James looked genuinely shocked.
"Where did you find this?" His voice was barely above a whisper.
Bella pointed toward the shelf.
"It fell from a book."
James continued staring at the photograph. His hands tightened around it. Then suddenly, he walked away without another word nor an explanation.
Leaving Bella even more confused.
That evening, James entered his father's study. Richard Brown sat behind a massive oak desk, reading documents. The moment James placed the photograph on the table, Richard froze. The blood drained from his face. For several seconds neither man spoke. Then Richard slowly sat down.
"My God." Richard gasped.
"You know her?” James asked with a tone that demanded immediate answers. Richard looked exhausted. Older somehow.
"Where did you get this?"
James ignored him.
"Who is she?" A heavy, painful silence ensued. Then Richard spoke.
A single name. "Elena."
James frowned.
"Who was she?" Richard closed his eyes. Like a man preparing to relive an old nightmare.
"The biggest mistake of my life."
Meanwhile, Lisa sat inside her room furious. She had noticed James and Bella growing closer. The way his eyes followed her, the way his mood changed around her, the way he defended her, Lisa hated it. More than that, she feared it.
A knock interrupted her thoughts. She opened the door. The mysterious man from the previous night entered. Tall, well dressed and dangerous as always.
His name was Mason Blake. CEO of Blake Enterprises. One of James Brown's biggest rivals.
"You look worried," Mason observed.
Lisa poured herself wine. "You should be worried too."
Mason smiled. "Why?"
"Because Bella found something."
That wiped the smile off his face.
"What?"
Lisa's voice dropped.
"A photograph."
For the first time, Mason looked alarmed.
Across the mansion, Bella sat on her bed. Unable to stop thinking. Her mother's photograph, James's reaction, Richard's reaction. None of it made sense.
A sudden knock interrupted her thoughts. Mrs. Shirley entered. The older woman looked nervous. Very nervous. Bella immediately noticed.
"What is it?"
Mrs. Shirley sat beside her. For several moments she remained silent. Then she reached into her pocket. And pulled out another photograph.
Bella gasped. It was identical.
Same woman. Same smile. Same face.
"My mother."
Mrs. Shirley nodded. Tears filled her eyes.
"Yes."
Bella stared.
"What is happening?"
The older woman's hands trembled. "I promised I would never tell."
"Tell what?"
Mrs. Shirley looked toward the door. Making sure nobody was listening.
Then she whispered. "Your mother worked here."
Bella froze.
"What?"
"Twenty-five years ago." The room suddenly felt smaller. Harder to breathe. Bella's heart pounded violently.
"My mother worked here?"
Mrs. Shirley nodded. "She was more than an employee."
Bella swallowed. "What do you mean?"
The older woman opened her mouth, then the lights went out. Darkness swallowed the room. Bella jumped.
"What happened?" A scream echoed somewhere inside the mansion.
Then another.
And another.
Panic erupted throughout the estate. Bella rushed toward the window. The entire mansion had lost power. Every light, every camera, every security system was gone.
Then she saw it.
A figure running across the garden. Dressed entirely in black. Heading toward the west wing. Toward Richard Brown's private office.
Bella's eyes widened. The intruder.
Without thinking, she ran.
The mansion was in chaos. Staff members shouted, and guards rushed through the hallways. Bella sprinted toward the west wing. Her heart hammered. The darkness made everything worse. She reached Richard's office. The door stood open. A bad sign. A very bad sign. Slowly she stepped inside.
Moonlight streamed through the window. The room was empty at first. Then she noticed something. A safe that was left wide open. Papers scattered everywhere. Someone had been searching for something.
Suddenly, a hand covered her mouth from behind. Bella screamed. The stranger dragged her backward. A knife pressed against her throat. Her body went rigid. Fear exploded inside her. Then the stranger whispered four chilling words. Words that stopped her heart.
"You were never supposed to survive."
