Jess’s POV
Justin turned the TV on and what we saw made us all freeze. It showed everything that was going on in town. People were walking past the camera in single file.
“Jess, can you record this” Asked dad
“Yeah sure” I hit the record button.
We all sat in silence watching as more and more people walked past the camera
“Shit” Yelled Justin “That was Maya. I work with her”
All of a sudden, a white face appeared on the screen. It felt like it was looking straight at us and then the screen went blank. I got up and started playing what we had just seen in slow motion.
“Hey sis can you pause this for a sec, now look here” He pointed to the corner of the screen”
“What on earth is that” I gasped.
“Well little sis whatever it is I do not think that it is from earth”
On the screen there was what looked like a spaceship. It was a deep purple colour. Near the front of the spaceship was a group of about eight things that looked the same as the white face that came in front of the camera. You could not see them clearly, but they looked like they had the same heart shaped heads.
“Ok this is starting to look more and more like the bloody twilight zone”. I sighed “Mum and Dad can you please stay here and mark the maps where you saw smoke coming out of the buildings to see if you can find a pattern. Justin and I are going to go and get supplies. I don’t think that it is safe to even stay here for long”
“Ok baby be careful”
“I always am mum. Come on Justin, sorry but we are going in the Kombi again”
“Yea I gathered that. Somehow, I do not think that we will be able to carry all of the supplies back here”
As we were walking to my van I looked towards town. The smoke was getting closer to us. But it was still a while away. We had time to get supplies. Justin climbed into the van and scowled at me as Romeo jumped over him to get into the back.
“That stupid dog of yours just scared the crap out of me”
“Well then you should have let him get in the back first”
We drove to the centre of the small town in silence. We did not pass or see anyone else.
“This is spooky sis I know you live in a small country town but there should be some people out walking or shopping or something”
“Yeah, it is not usually this quiet on a Saturday” We pulled up outside the outside recreation store and there was no one inside. But it was all unlocked with the lights on
“What the hell where is everyone?”
“I have no idea sis, but I suggest that we take what we need and then get the hell out of here”
“Ok agreed. We are going to need sleeping bags, cooking appliances, pots, pans and knives and forks. You go find them and I am going to get matches guns and ammo.”
“What the hell do you need ammo and guns for?”
“We are going to have to eat and you never know we might also need to protect ourselves”
“You know you seem to be very calm about this whole thing. You also seem to know exactly what to do”
“Hey, I read a lot” I quickly turned away from him and we both went to different sides of the shop to get what we needed. I choose to get the guns and ammo as I knew that they would be locked away and Justin did not have a clue how to pick a lock, but it was one of my many skills. Looking at the rifles and decided that we would need one each. I grabbed mum a 223 Ruger mini, Dad a 308 Lithgow, Justin a 30-30 Winchester and for me a 12ga 870 Magnum. I also grabbed all the ammo that they had for the four guns. Then I went around the back of the counter into the storage room and grabbed a carton of matches.
“Hay Justin how are you getting on” I called as I walked back around to the front of the store.
“Great I need your van keys so that I can start to load this stuff”
I looked at the pile of things he had collected and felt pride for my brother he had got everything we would need, and he had even remembered the extra gas canisters that we would need.
“Sweet, let’s get all this loaded into the van then”
It didn’t take us long to get the van loaded up.
“Crap we forgot packs and boots, I will run in and grab some while you run to the supermarket and get food that will save for a long time and be easy to carry and eat. What size shoe are you?”
“I am a 10 and so is dad. I have no idea about mum though”
“That’s ok she is a 7. I will meet you at the van in 10 min be as quick as you can”
With that said Justin ran next door to the supermarket and I ran back into the store to get boots and thick socks. I also grabbed some merino jumpers, thermals and Jackets for us all. I made sure grabbed some clothes for everyone as they didn’t bring anything with them and there is no way that we are going back for it. I also grabbed Romeo some pig’s ears as I had no idea how long it would be before I could give him simple treats again. Justin was quick and met me back at the van in record time struggling with eight bags. I ran out to help him.
“Ok , hopefully that is everything that we will need for now. Let’s get out of here and get back to my place”
“Agreed, I am getting spooked been out in the open like this” Justin agreed.
