Chapter 4 Chapter 4
Jess’s POV
We had been walking for about four hours when I decided that we were in a good spot to show my family how to use their guns.
“Ok I am going to teach you how to use your guns and then we are going to shoot at some targets” It did not take as long as I thought it would to teach them. Justin picked it up straight away and was a good shot. Dad took a bit more time and was an ok shot but mum well she was scared of the jolt she got when she fired, and her shot was miles off. I let her keep the gun any way though as we might need the gun at some stage.
“I am so hungry can we please eat now?” Mum asked while giving me the puppy eyes
“Yeah, it’s getting late so we should probably set up camp for the night” I grunted as I started to give out orders “Justin can you please find wood so we can set a fire. Dad, can you please find some rocks and put them in a circle so that we can set up the fire in it. Mum, can you please set up the sleeping bags and I will start cooking”
“Wow you are the little organiser aren’t you” Mum laughed.
“Just trying to keep us all safe” I told her
It did not take dad and Justin long to get the fire going. Mum was having great fun setting the sleeping bags up around the fire. I smiled to myself as I cooked. We looked just like a family on holiday not a family on the run from aliens.
“Ok guys dinner is ready” I told them as I started to dish up.
I had brought some bread rolls with me so that we could have soup and bread rolls for tea. No one knew the next time we could have food like this. Bread was no longer an option for us unless we had time to make it.
“What time is it?” Justin asked
“It’s 8.30pm, why?”
“Just seems unreal that we noticed that something odd was going on at 11.00am and now here we are what nine and a half hours later in the middle of nowhere eating soup and bread rolls by a campfire”
“Yeah, life can be odd like that. I think I might head off to sleep” I put my bowl to the side and climbed into my sleeping bag turning my back on everyone.
“I am with you on that all of this walking has made me sleepy I am not used to it” Moaned Justin with a smirk on his face.
“Yeah, us too we are getting old lots of walking makes us sleepy, just one thing though love I don’t suppose that you brought toilet paper, did you?”
“Oh, Mum what will we do with you? Yes, I brought toilet roll. I had a feeling you would ask” I replied as I grabbed a roll out of my pack and threw it at her.
I woke up before the rest of the family, so went to check out the area with Romeo. The area looked the same as it did when we set up camp no one or anything had come near the camp, apart from a couple of deer and small animals. When I got back to the camp everyone was still fast asleep, so I started to make breakfast. We still had some bread rolls left, and I had brought some bacon. As soon as I started to fry the bacon everyone started to wake up.
“Where do we get dressed?” Justin asked me
“Wherever you want they don’t have changing rooms in the wild” I teased “There is a river about 500m to your left though if you want to wash up”
“Ok sweet. I forgot my hair gel I don’t suppose you brought any, did you?”
I could not help it I burst in to hysterical laughter and mum and dad joined me
“Hey, what are you all laughing at it was a serious question” Justin pouted.
“Justin, look around you. There is only us who are going to see you. Who knows when we will next see anyone, and even then, we have no idea if they will still be ok or not”
“Ok point taken. I am going to go get changed and have a wash. How long until breakfast is ready sis?”
“It will be ready in about 5 min so hurry”
“Will do”
“Mum, can you please pack up the sleeping bags and dad can you please try and get rid of any trace that there was a fire here. It’s better to be safe than sorry”
By the time the bacon was ready Justin had finished cleaning up and got changed, while mum and dad had cleared up the camp.
“Ok so we will start walking as soon as we have finished eating. I want to be up the mountains by this afternoon so that we can try to see what is going on”
Romeo licked the dishes clean for us and then Mum ran to the river to wash them before we set off.
The walk today was not as quick as yesterday because mum, dad and Justin where all tired from the long walk yesterday.
“Come on guys speed up a bit we want to be up the mountain by about lunch. At this rate it will be night fall before we get there”
“How do you have so much energy? You work in an office just like mum, and you don’t go to the gym. You also have no work out equipment at home, so tell me how come you are so much fitter than the rest of us?”
“Yeah, Jess he has a very good point. You sorted us out and got guns and ammo for us and taught us how to shoot and load them” Dad joined in
“Fine if you really want to know I will tell you as we walk just promise me that you will speed up”
“Deal” Mum, dad and Justin all replied together
“Ok here it goes” I sighed as I started to explain everything.
