Chapter 5 Chapter 5

Drake’s POV

The night the seers came changed my life forever.

My parents had gone for the annual Alpha meetings, and for the first time, they brought me along. I was supposed to observe, to learn—after all, I was meant to be the next Alpha of the Crescent Pack. Or so I thought.

The meeting hall was already filled with Alphas, their Lunas, and a few trusted Betas when the air suddenly shifted. A low murmur spread through the room, followed by an uneasy silence.

Then they entered.

The seers.

Three sisters, draped in gray robes that seemed to swallow the light. Their eyes were clouded, unfocused—yet somehow seeing everything. They existed to warn our kind of impending danger, and the fact that they were here meant one thing:

Trouble.

“The time has come,” the first sister spoke, her voice scraping against my ears like metal dragged across stone. “The next Lycan King will emerge.”

Shock rippled through the hall. I watched hardened Alphas stiffen, watched confidence crack in places I never thought it could.

I had heard the stories growing up. Lycan Kings were not myths—they were rulers of our world, born once every hundred years. They emerged only during times of great change. Some brought unity and prosperity. Others brought bloodshed and ruin.

“There is one among you,” the second sister continued. “Born of the Crescent Pack. His emergence will either end this world… or usher in a new beginning.”

My chest tightened.

“Crescent Pack?” My father’s voice cut through the silence, sharp with disbelief. “You mean my pack?”

“Yes,” the third sister said calmly.

I felt the weight of dozens of stares shift toward me. I tried to keep my posture steady, my face neutral—but fear crept in anyway, cold and unwelcome.

“Which of their sons?” Alpha Greg asked. He was one of my parents’ closest allies. “Which boy is the Lycan King?”

“That,” the first sister replied, “will be revealed on the next full moon.”

Then, all three spoke in unison.

“The soul-tied mate will determine his path. Light or darkness. Salvation or destruction.”

And with that, they turned and left the hall as if they hadn’t just shattered the balance of the werewolf world.

The meeting ended almost immediately and was adjourned. Conversations stalled. Alphas avoided my eyes—but not for lack of curiosity. Fear clung to some of them, heavy and suffocating, others looked at me like I was a shining new toy.

Before anyone could approach me, Beta James stepped in and guided me away.

“How will this affect us?” I asked quietly as he led me toward the car.

“There’s no need to worry about that right now, Drake,” he replied firmly. “My priority is getting you and your parents home safely.”

“Could it be dangerous?” I asked, forcing myself to sound calm. I was the Alpha’s son—fear wasn’t allowed.

“Let’s not find out,” he said, opening the car door.

We drove home in silence.

Once inside, the tension was unbearable. My mother cupped my face gently, her hands trembling just slightly.

“Go be with your brother,” she said softly.

I looked at both my parents. Their smiles were strained—forced. I didn’t let it shake me. Instead, I went to find Mark.

The next full moon was only a month away, and the news spread fast.

From that moment on, Mark and I were treated differently. Some pack members looked at us with awe, others with fear. I hated it. I hated what hung over us—what it was doing to my family.

“You okay?” Lucien, my best friend, asked one afternoon as we played basketball.

I passed him the ball and shrugged. “I’m just trying to protect Mark. He shouldn’t have to deal with this.

He starred at me, ‘What about you? Who is protecting you’

‘I will be fine’ I smiled, ‘I know you’ve got my back anyways’

“I’ve got your back,” Lucien said seriously. “Always.”

I nodded and shoved him lightly. “Come on. Let’s play for real. I need the distraction.”

As the full moon approached, the tension in the pack became unbearable. Security doubled. My father spent hours on calls with other Alphas, many insisting on being present for the reveal.

Worse than all of that—I felt different.

I was only fourteen. Wolves weren’t supposed to awaken until sixteen, but something inside me stirred. Scratched. Pushed.

It scared me, and I didn't want to tell my parents. They already had enough on their plates.

“Drake. Mark.” My father called us in the night of the full moon. He pulled us into a tight embrace. “Whichever one of you it is, I will protect him with my life. I love you both.”

We were placed in a secure room with my parents, Beta James. While Delta Sean oversaw the pack’s full moon shifts for those who couldn't control the moon’s pull yet.

The moment the moon reached its peak, agony tore through me.

Fire and ice clashed inside my body. I screamed—then blacked out.

I was told later that I shifted.

From that night on, everything changed.

I trained relentlessly. Attended Alpha meetings. Made decisions no teenager should ever have to make. I also fought every day to keep the darkness inside me under control.

But it fought back.

The moment my parents knew something was truly wrong was when I broke my instructor’s arms during training—and smiled while doing it.

It felt good.

Too good.

When I came back to myself, the damage was done.

My parents searched desperately for my mate, believing she would anchor me. I hoped they wouldn’t find her.

I pushed my friends away. I let Becca in.

She didn’t judge the darkness. She embraced it.

Then Elisa walked into that tiny diner. The moment her scent hit me, I knew.

My mate and she was human.

Fragile. Weak.

I hated her for it. I made up my mind that if she ever discovered she was mine, that was the day I would reject her and defy fate.

How could she help me? How could someone so breakable be the thing that saved—or destroyed—me?

So I made her suffer. I let Becca do what she did best. I unleashed my wolf on her. I let fear be my weapon, just to make her hate me and leave town.

Elisa didn’t know it yet, but because of her my life was about to unravel.

And I wasn’t sure if I wanted that to happen.
