Chapter 3 Hidden Rank

Fifteen minutes later, Ethan sat down on the floor beside the Shadow Hound's body with twelve minor wounds, three bruises already swelling purple, and the kitchen knife still lodged in the creature's throat because his right arm no longer had the strength to pull it free.

He hadn't won because he was skilled. He had won because he was afraid to die — afraid enough that every time he was knocked back he stumbled rather than fell, every time it advanced he circled sideways rather than retreating straight, no tactics whatsoever, just a body that refused to stay down. The Shadow Hound was larger, faster, and stronger than him in every measurable sense — but it died first because more blood ended up outside it than inside, and Ethan was still standing when that happened.

He tilted his head back and looked at the dark ceiling. Breathed. Just breathed, counting each breath until his hands stopped shaking.

The screen appeared on his twelfth count.

Not the familiar pale-grey System interface displaying F-Rank / Does Not Meet Combat Standards that he had stared at until he knew every line by memory. This one was pure black, the text deep red and trembling faintly at its edges, like something straining to hold itself within a frame it didn't quite fit:

⚠ WARNING — HIGHEST PRIORITY

Special activation conditions have been met. Survival probability at time of activation: 12%

☠ PRIMORDIAL SYSTEM — INITIALIZING

User: Ethan Cole Rank as classified by standard scanning equipment: F Actual Rank: BEYOND CLASSIFICATION

Note: The Primordial System does not respond to standard scanning devices. This is not a malfunction. This is by design.

Passive skills activated:

[DEVOUR] — Absorbs and stores energy from defeated creatures. No restriction on type. No restriction on quantity.

[MASQUERADE] — Conceals true rank from all scanning devices and detection skills.

Rank displayed externally: F — fixed.

Absorption from [Shadow Hound – Rank G]: ▸ [Enhanced Reflexes – Level 1]

Active quest: [Escape This Zone Alive] Reward: Stage 2/9 unlocked

⚠ WARNING: Do not disclose this System to anyone.

Reason: Previous users of the Primordial System — all of them — died before reaching Stage 3. The entity responsible is still active.

Ethan read through to the end, then read the final section once more. All of them died. The entity responsible is still active. He let those two sentences sit in his mind without trying to process them, the way you look at a fresh wound before deciding how serious it is.

Then he reached down and pulled the kitchen knife free from the Shadow Hound's throat. It took more effort than he expected — the blade had been locked in place by muscle and cartilage that had already begun to stiffen, and he had to grip it with both hands and jerk twice before it came loose.

The quest said to escape alive, but it didn't say which direction the exit was. He had entered through the left passage, and turning back was the most logical route. He looked toward the door, then looked toward the deeper darkness ahead, where he could hear other things breathing steadily in the silence.

If something had already killed every previous user of this System, then hiding from it solved nothing — it only meant he wouldn't know where the threat was coming from. He needed to know. Not today, not with this nicked knife and twelve unbandaged wounds, but eventually he needed to know.

He turned toward the exit and walked.

------------------------------------------------

He stepped out of the Gate at 4:43 in the morning with twelve minor wounds, thirty-odd bruises, a kitchen knife that was nearly bent past use, and two new entries in his System panel. He took the long way home to avoid the main cameras on the primary roads, following the alley behind Millhaven Market where the streetlights were spaced too far apart for any camera to read a face.

His mind sorted through what had just happened in order. The Gate in Ironspire's basement was unregistered, which meant someone knew it was there and chose not to report it. His Primordial System had been concealed not by a scanning equipment error but by the System itself, deliberately — which meant someone, somewhere, had designed it to work that way. And something had already killed every previous holder of this System, and the System knew that, and had chosen to warn him from the very beginning rather than let him find out on his own.

He stopped at the convenience store at the end of the block, bought a bread roll and a carton of milk with loose change from his pocket, and stood eating under the awning. Early morning Neo Ashveil carried a particular quiet that never lasted long — delivery trucks were beginning to appear from the direction of the harbor, early-shift workers drifted past on motorbikes, and at the street corner across from him, the massive Celestial Vanguard advertising screen was running its recruitment clip: three A-Ranks in fresh uniforms standing before a blazing dungeon entrance, a large white tagline beneath them — "You have the potential to Awaken. We'll help you become the best version of yourself."

Ethan looked at that screen and thought of his father signing the disownment papers, setting down the pen, and sliding the document across the table without looking up. Not the gesture of someone in pain. The gesture of someone who had already decided before he sat down.

He finished the bread roll, drank the milk to the last drop, and dropped both into the bin by the lamppost.

One hour and fourteen minutes until his shift. Enough time to shower and change if he moved quickly.
