Chapter 4 Chapter 4: The Invite

Ragnar

“You, come with me.” Xander whispers, tapping the man beside me. His scent fills my lungs and immediately I am reminded of the sex dream, one I shouldn’t have had.

I shake my head immediately as I soon realize what is happening. Just like that, one after the other, the civilians begin to disappear under Xander’s guidance while the infiltrators are still distracted by the maiden in distress.

“Camille Ashford, the promised bride.” I whisper. A simple way for my brain to register the name and the face.

“Let her go! She’s not the one you want!” Magnus barks as he pushes himself to the center of the chaos. Rhys as his men firmly planted at his side, still unable to move for fear that Camille might get shot.

“You are in no position to tell us what we want.” The man holding the gun to her head claps back.

I let out a deep breath knowing I have to step in because I’ll never let anyone steal my revenge from me. If Magnus Wolfe or any member of his family has to die, it has to be by my own hands.

Sadly tonight isn’t the night for such festivity.

Immediately, the one holding Camille hostage notices the inconsistency in the number of people. His eyes dart around the room and I can see the confusion deeply rooted in them.

“What’s going on?” He whispers.

That moment of confusion is enough for Damon to close the gap and pull Camille away from the masked man. “Heads up bro.” He cackles as he pushes her towards Xander who then leads her to safety.

Rhys and his men finally spring into action.

Damon flashes a smile at the man before driving a punch straight into his jaw, causing his mask to rip revealing a bloody lip. The man loses control of the gun in his hand and it fires as it drops to the ground, causing everyone to duck while I watch it bury itself into the ceiling.

The hall is almost empty now, all civilians have been cleared from the danger zone. Well all except me because I have refused to leave.

More masked men pour in, filling the gaps of the ones that have been dealt with by Damon or Rhys and his men.

“Damon seems to be the combat twin.” I whisper under my breath, taking another mental note.

There’s chaos everywhere, so quickly I step into it. I smirk at the one closest to me and his eyes narrow.

“I’ll shoot,” he warns.

“No you won’t.” I reply.

With one quick stride, I close the gap between us and grip firmly around the wrist of the hand holding the gun.

Before his understanding of the situation could kick in, his gun was already in my hands. “I told you, you won’t.” I frown and then send a bullet flying into his arm.

He drops to the floor and I lift my gaze to see Rhys, watching me keenly. Our eyes meet and he gives me a firm nod.

Great, I have been noticed!

Bullets fly here and there. But with practiced ease, I manage to disarm quite a number of the masked men whose main goal remains unknown till this moment.

To my left, I spot a sniper shooter. His aim is targeted at Damon who is busy handling two men at the same time.

“Damon! At three o clock!” I yell and he quickly shoots the two men in front of him before sending a bullet at the sniper shooter.

The shooter and his gun both fall to the ground.

“Thanks man, that could have ended me!” He yells back, flashing a grin at me; I respond with a nod.

I scan the place as I try to weigh the current state of the situation. The masked men were now reduced to as good as nothing, I could finally take a breath and let Rhys and his men do the rest.

I duck into the hallway to get out of the crossfire.

My back hits the wall and I’m trying to catch my breath, then I see it.

Genevieve.

One of the masked men has her shoved hard against the wall, a gun pressed under her chin.

“Tell me where the emblem is!” he snaps.

Emblem? What emblem? I made another mental note.

I drive a flying kick straight into his jaw. With my other hand I yank Genevieve to my side.

“You’re alright.” I whisper, trying to steady her shaking.

“Thank you.” she manages before tearing away from my grip and running.

At the same time, the masked man slips past me and escapes before I can ask him about the emblem.

I step back into the main hall. The fight is over. The infiltrators are either dead on the floor or in cuffs, and the air finally stops ringing with gunshots.

Must be a traumatizing experience for the faint hearted.

Damon, Xander and Marcus walk towards me as soon as they see me. I tighten my fists just to prevent the memories of the night my pack died by their hands from creeping in.

“You saved me there.” Damon smiles.

“It was nothing.” I reply, feigning ignorance.

Marcus steps in front of his son, his eyes sizing me up from head to toe. “What did you say your line of profession is again?” He asks like we’ve ever had a conversation before.

“I’m a businessman.” I reply curtly.

He tilts his head a little. “I’m surprised that a civilian… a mere businessman nonetheless has such skill at combat.” He points out and I could see the skepticism written all over his face.

“I-“

“Thank you for saving my mother.” Xander cut in, saving me from his father’s scrutiny.

“Oh it was nothing.” I reply.

He shakes his head, his eyes sparkling under the light. “We have to reward you for your bravery. Please make your request, whatever it is, to me.”

“No! He saved me. I should be the one to reward him and he should make his request to me.” Damon interrupts, stepping in.

How childish.

Marcus sucks his teeth, his disappointment evident. “Must you two always act a fool?” He snaps.

The twins go quiet immediately. And Marcus eyes trail back to me but he doesn’t say a word.

Xander clears his throat, pulling my attention away from their father.

“I’d like to offer you a job at Wolfe Holdings.”

Bingo.
