Chapter 6 Too Close to Deny
Convergence. The word hung in the air after Selene said it. It was as if it wss refusing to fade and thick as a storm rolling in. Elara felt it sinking into her, twisting familiar things sideways. Her magic had gone quiet, but not in a peaceful way. It pressed along her nerves, coiled and waiting. She hated how, even now, it didn’t feel wrong. It felt right, like it completed something in her she’d been missing. That thought scared her more than Selene ever could.
“Stop talking like I’m not here,” Elara snapped. She tried to make her voice sharp, but the tremor at the edges gave her away.
She spun to face Selene, hunting for anything that felt solid. Something she could hold on to.
“You don’t get to decide what I am.”
Selene’s face stayed smooth. No anger, no arguments. Just that flat look of hers, like she was already watching the end unfold.
“I don’t have to decide,” Selene said. Soft, but with a certainty that stabbed straight through.
“It’s happening already.”
The words landed like a punch. Elara’s doubts came crawling back, cold and sharp. Before she could sink, she felt Cael’s hand against hers, a reminder. Anchoring. That spot of warmth tethered her to the moment and then something deeper tugged in her chest, as unmistakable as gravity. Her magic reacted to him first. Her breathing slowed, her eyes found his and they made eye contact. He was looking at her and only at her. He didn’t even pay attention to Selene or the threat. He was just focusing on her. That look burned with something heavy, intense enough that her pulse skittered. Her stomach flipped.
“You should back up,” she said, but the words sounded weak and more like warning than command.
Cael didn’t budge. “You don’t want that.”
Selene’s patience snapped. It wasn’t loud or dramatic, just sudden, her magic snapped, cold and tight.
“Enough. Elara. Move.”
That was a command. The kind Elara’s body usually obeyed without thinking. For a second, she almost did but Cael’s grip held her even, grounding hervand something inside her steadied again.
“No.” Elara’s voice came out quiet, but sure.
Selene’s eyes hardened. “Then you’re choosing him.”
The accusation stung because Elara couldn’t lie now. The attack came out of nowhere. It was fast and sharp. Selene’s magic shot straight for Cael’s chest. Elara’s heart kicked in her chest. She tried to move, instinct screaming at her, but she was not quick enough. Everything slowed. She saw the magic strike, felt her own power lurch, but too late and then Cael stepped in, head-on..The spell hit him but nothing happened. No shield, no recoil, just nothing. Selene’s magic folded in on itself, fizzled out. There was no wound or scorch mark. Silence fell, it wass sudden and disorienting. Selene froze. Her control finally cracked. Shock twisted her face. “No. That’s not possible” but here they were.
Elara barely heard her. She was staring at Cael, standing there, untouched.
“You should be hurt,” she blurted.
Cael met her eyes, expression unreadable but locked on her. “I told you. It doesn't work on me.”
She’d thought that should end it. It didn’t beqcause he was still looking at her, and her heart was hammered for a different reason now, she’d stepped between him and danger without thinking.
“You could’ve moved,” she said, shaky and frustrated.
Cael took a small step closer. “And let it hit you?” His voice dropped, quiet and rough. Didn’t need an answer, they both knew she would’ve taken the hit for him.
“That wasn’t your choice,” she whispered.
He didn’t look away. “It is when it involves you.”
That sent something wild and unsafe through her. Every part of her said to back away, cut the connection before she lost herself but she didn’t. She couldn’t. Her eyes flicked to his hand next to hers, too close and for one reckless moment, she wanted him to close that gap. He noticed. He lifted his hand, not because he wanted to touch her but the air crackled between them. “You feel it,” he said. No need for questions. Elara’s pulse stuttered. She hated how much she did. Before she could speak, Selene’s voice sliced through, cold and sharp. “Touch her again and you won’t walk away.”
The spell was broken, barely. Cael ignored Selene. He brought his fingers to brush Elara’s. The instant their skin met, Elara’s magic detonated everywhere at once. The ground cracked beneath them. Shadows burst skyward, wind knifed through the broken courtyard. Raw power tore through Elara, wild and overwhelming.
Cael caught her wrist, holding tight. “Elara!” but she barely heard him. Whispers crowded her mind, ancient voices hissing her name and then she saw somewhere else. She saw a black hall blazing with silver fire with blood everywhere. A woman screaming. Cael, wreathed in darkness, holding her as the world burned.
Elara ripped back to reality, gasping. Nearly collapsed, but Cael caught her, pulling her against him. The touch this time was intimate and possessive.
Selene was alert but at the same time scared of what might happen between them.
“Elara, get away from him now!” Selene snapped but Elara couldn’t. Cael looked at her like something huge just shifted.
“You saw it,” he said softly even though he was almost afraid.
Elara’s chest tightened. “What was that?”
He didn’t answer, and the silence scared her more than the magic. Then Selene broke in. “That wasn’t a vision.” Her voice had thinned to a whisper. Elara turned. Selene looked shaken, pale. “That already happened.”
The world tilted. “What?”
Selene stared at Cael. “You told me she died.”
Elara’s heart stopped. Cael’s jaw clenched. She saw all she needed in that small motion and then another snap, shadows near the gate dropped, bowing. Every dark shape stretched toward Elara, prostrate.
A whisper slipped through the darkness: “She remembers him now.”
Elara went cold all over because this time, the voice sounded almost...happy.
