Chapter 3 Trap In Marriege

Ophelia’s Point Of View

I had the opportunity—I should have killed him right there and completed my mission, but he went ahead and made it hard for me–he fucking took a bullet for me, and my conscience didn't allow me to kill him. The church was now painted in blood, men in black piled on the ground, some dead, some groaning in pain. The war was over, and Daniel was unconscious, still bleeding his life away. I still don't understand anything—Why would the man I was supposed to kill risk his own life for mine?

I didn't have the answer to that question.

My breath was heavy as I used all my energy to push him off me. I sucked in a sharp breath as I sprang to my feet and rushed out of the hiding place.

“You need to call a doctor.. He's bleeding and unconscious.” I announced, my voice echoing through the church.

My father shot a deadly glare, but he didn't say anything.

Mister Russo, the Don of the Russo family, rushed over to us, his eyebrow wrinkled. “What did you do to my son?” His sharp voice sliced through the air.

I shrugged.. “He took the bullet...” I retorted.. “I didn't shoot him!”

“And I should trust you?” He scoffed.

“That's the least of your problems right now...” I gestured to his son lying lifeless on the ground. “Maybe you should be calling the ambulance.”

My stomach twisted into a knot, my grip tightening on my dress–if his life was saved, I was stuck with him. I had no way out–he knew something I didn't, which is why he chose to take that bullet for me, and now I wanted to know what it was.

After a few minutes of waiting, the ambulance arrived, and Daniel was rushed to the hospital along with his whole family, and my dad said we were going to follow behind them–I wasn't a fool not to know why he suggested that.

My hand trembled as I tried to tighten my grip on my dress as my dad took a step towards me. My mom had tears in her eyes while my grandma was throwing a dagger at me.

My dad stood in front of me, his closeness and heaviness in my body, but I forced myself to stand my ground and stare at him.

“You had one job...” His voice was terrifyingly calm. “One fucking job, but what did you do?”

“I tried my best...” I kept my voice steady as I locked my gaze with him.

My dad let out a chuckle–it was cold and chilling, sending a sharp shiver down my spine. Without a warning, he lifted his hand to my cheeks and slapped me, sending me to the ground, my back hitting the walls. I ignored the pain as I forced myself to get up again.

“You chose an enemy over your own family...” My dad clenched his jaw. “For that reason, I disown you. You are no longer my daughter. You will stay away from me and my family unless you want me to send you to your early grave.”

I laughed, but tears rolled down my cheeks. “You are finally being honest...” I sniffed. “This was your plan from the beginning. You knew I was going to fail, and then you made it all my fault and disowned me. I must say, your plan was indeed brilliant...”

His brows lifted. “What the fuck do you mean?”

I sneered as I wiped my tears. “You know exactly what I mean...” I snapped. “Anyways, from today onwards. You need to count your days.” I stood before him without hesitation. “They are numbered. If I don't become your lord, I will change my name.” Glaring at him one last time, I held my head high and began making my way out of the church.

He can't break me. I will destroy him instead. This was his perfect plan to get rid of me from the Moretti family business, and he succeeded…

I removed the veil from my hair and tossed it to the ground as I made my way to the parking lot. A driver from Russo was already waiting for me, but before I could get inside the car, I heard my mom calling out to me.

I let out a sigh.

“Where are you going, my dear?” She asked, her face puffy, her eyes red from crying.

“To my in-laws. I just got married, remember?” I swear I didn't want to sound like this with her, but I wasn't feeling okay either.

She took a step towards me, but I took a step back, my gaze not meeting hers.

She cleared her throat. “I'm sorry.” She whispered.

I swallowed hard. “You don't have to,” I muttered. “He's your husband; obviously I can't expect you to go against him.”

“Ophelia..” I didn't let her finish her sentence.

“I should probably go,” I said. “I don't want you to be in trouble because of me.” I turned my attention to the car. I flung the door open and stepped in, leaving her standing on her own. The driver started the car and drove off.

I blinked back my tears. I won't cry. I was stronger than this. It was just a phase, and I would pass through it.

The ride to the hospital was quiet as the driver drove, and after a few minutes we arrived, and I stepped out of the car and made my way inside.

After the receptionist told me about Daniel's ward, I made my way right inside. Right as I arrived, I found his parents talking to the doctor.

“The bullet just grazed his chest and arm. He's absolutely fine.” I heard the doctor say. “We can't allow you all to meet him now, but he is insisting on meeting his wife.”

My heart skipped a beat as the doctor added. Why did he want to meet me even after knowing everything?

“His wife isn't–” Mister Russo trailed off. “There she is...” He pointed at my direction.

The doctor turned her attention to me, a smile pasted on her lips. “Please come with me.”

I nodded as I followed her to the ward. She pushed the door open and gestured for me to step in. “Please call me if anything happens...”

“Sure...” I muttered as I stepped inside and shut the door behind me. God knows what Daniel Russo wanted from me, but whatever it was–I will find out today.
