Chapter 6 Don’t Regret the Decision You Made
The entire hall of guests erupted in shock.
Just a few days ago, to stabilize the Taylor family's stock, Anthony had publicly claimed their marriage was harmonious, even saying the reason they hadn't had children was to enjoy their time together as a couple.
Yet today, Evelyn was demanding a divorce in front of everyone.
"Evelyn."
He called her name seriously, then reached out to pull Evelyn away from the scene.
But she shook off his hand.
"Don't you always like to make everything clear in front of everyone? Then today I'll say it clearly in front of everyone—I want a divorce from you, from you, Anthony."
Anthony hadn't seen Evelyn this serious in a long time, and panic flooded his heart.
He reached out and grabbed Evelyn's arm tightly.
"Eve, stop this. I know recent events have made you suffer, but today... you were wrong too. If you had brought the birthday gift you'd been preparing for my mother when you came, Scarlett and I wouldn't have had to step in, and Scarlett wouldn't have grabbed the wrong thing in her rush. Scarlett has already apologized to you."
"Yes, Evelyn, I know I was wrong. This is all my fault. I meant well but messed up," Scarlett said.
"Blame you for what? If she hadn't shown up empty-handed, not even remembering her own mother-in-law's birthday, why would you and Anthony have to go out of your way to save her face?" May said. "Divorce? Look at all these years you've been married—how many things have you relied on my son for? And you dare mention divorce? I'd like to see if you have the guts to walk out of the Taylor family's door today. Think carefully—the Taylor family will never allow a woman to step through our door a second time."
Every word pierced Evelyn's heart like a needle.
But Evelyn felt numb, completely numb.
After all... these years in the Taylor family, just as May said, Evelyn was like a lost soul with nowhere to go, like a weed that no one cared about.
"Eve, you've already upset Mom this much. Stop making trouble, okay?" Anthony's words seemed comforting but were actually adding fuel to the fire.
"I'm not joking."
Evelyn's mind flashed through all those humiliating moments she'd unconsciously endured, all those details of betrayal.
It turned out everything had been there all along, if only she'd seen it.
"We've already signed..." Evelyn was about to reveal that they'd already signed the divorce papers.
But Scarlett interrupted: "Auntie, Anthony, Evelyn, please don't fight over this anymore. It's all my fault. All my fault."
The audience's attention was immediately drawn to her.
Cut off from defending herself, Evelyn didn't want to keep arguing. She looked coldly at everyone present, including him.
"Forget it."
What's the point of saying more?
Even if she told him all her grievances and he suddenly woke up and came back to her, so what?
The man and woman tangled in that bed were them.
Cheating during marriage was already an undeniable fact.
Heartbroken, Evelyn rushed out the door, hurried to the room she shared with him, packed her already-prepared belongings into her bag, then walked through the entire hall, planning to leave with her head held high.
But in the hall, people still blocked her way.
"Evelyn, think carefully. If you dare leave here today, I absolutely won't ask you to come back. When there's no way down for you then, don't blame me—blame your own heartlessness today."
No way down?
In all their years of arguments, when had there ever been a way down for Evelyn?
Hadn't it always been Evelyn who chose to forgive in the end, who made peace?
May was seated on the sofa, her cold gaze looking at Evelyn as if poisoned.
"I'll say it one more time. If you dare step out of the Taylor family's door today, you'll have nothing to do with the Taylor family, and you'll never have another chance to enter. You'd better think clearly."
Was it worth the risk?
Evelyn lowered her head and said softly, where no one could see, "Fine."
Those with good fortune don't enter houses without fortune.
She truly would never enter the Taylor family's door again.
Just like that, Evelyn left decisively. When Anthony tried to follow, he heard May shout.
"If you dare chase after her today, I'll never recognize you as my son again."
Anthony had to stay.
Evelyn walked to a crowded area and hailed a cab, but the address she gave wasn't where they currently lived—it was... their love nest from when they were most in love.
The new home they'd decorated together bit by bit when they first got married.
Everything in the room seemed unchanged, just like those sweet words from the past that had touched her heart.
But everything had changed.
Those beautiful words and those deeply memorable moments from the past had long since vanished without a trace.
"Eve, get me some water."
From outside the room, she seemed to hear his loving call again, but when Evelyn opened the door, she saw nothing.
The man who used to love sitting in the living room, taking conference calls, calling her name and asking her to bring him water—he was long gone.
Evelyn lowered her head, and a crystal-clear tear fell.
Just then, she heard sounds from outside the door.
Evelyn watched as the door was pushed open.
But what appeared was a man's eager embrace.
Without even looking, he pressed Scarlett against the wall.
Passionate kisses followed, and Scarlett's coy, reproachful voice fell on Evelyn's ears.
"Anthony, don't do this. Evelyn... just left angry. If she knew that right now you and I... she'd definitely misunderstand even more. You should go find her now, not..."
"Scarlett."
Anthony was breathing heavily, already hard below.
"Scarlett, my darling, do you really want me to go find that woman looking like this? Don't mention that disgusting woman at a time like this. She wants a divorce? Perfect... I've been sick of looking at her face for a long time anyway."
He raised the woman's hands above her head, forcing her to arch her back.
