Chapter 7 Midnight Provocation
The voices by her ear wouldn't stop - a man and woman teasing each other playfully, just like a deeply loving couple.
Evelyn bit her lip, holding back tears, and turned to hide behind a nearby wall.
"Anthony, if Evelyn really asks you for a divorce, will you marry me?" Scarlett arched her body, pressing tightly against the man.
Anthony couldn't wait to lift her clothes, scooping her up by the waist and placing her on a nearby table.
He didn't answer out loud. Without a word, he leaned in, his burning kisses landing on her lips.
And Evelyn captured all of this intimate scene with her phone.
She raised her hand to wipe away the tears that had somehow covered her entire face, sent all the photos to her lawyer, then left through the back door on the first floor.
She didn't see what happened after she left.
Anthony coldly pushed Scarlett away. "Scarlett, I usually don't mind your little games and schemes, but..."
"I won't divorce her."
No matter what the reason.
——
After leaving the marital home, Evelyn returned once again to that "new cage."
"Ma'am."
The villa's butler walked over.
"Your husband called earlier and said if you came back, he'd like you to call him back. He wants to discuss something with you."
"I see." Evelyn walked straight toward the master bedroom on the second floor.
The master bedroom was spotlessly clean, with her and Anthony's belongings each placed in their designated spots.
The clothes, jewelry, and bags in the closet were all professionally maintained.
And it seemed she hadn't been "Evelyn" in a long time.
Evelyn picked out clothes from the closet that suited "Evelyn" better, not Mrs. Taylor, and changed into them.
Then she walked to the bookshelf nearby and took down a box.
Inside the box were many beautiful memories.
But none of them were needed anymore.
She took them out one by one, gradually recalling those beautiful years, before watching them consumed by the flame from the lighter in her hand.
Until the last one.
The bedroom door was forcefully pushed open from outside. He stumbled in, grabbed Evelyn's hand, and threw her onto the bed behind him.
"Evelyn, you..."
Her different look made his eyes light up.
That uptight wife seemed to have disappeared.
Instead, she looked like she did back when they were dating.
He sat up straight again, his back to the woman as he spoke.
"I know what happened today was hard on you. When I gave it to you, I forgot I'd asked you to prepare a birthday gift for Mom. I meant well but messed up, and I never thought she'd use it to scheme against you."
His apologetic attitude seemed serious, but it was quite half-hearted.
"I had someone book tickets to Hawaii to make up for the trip we missed, or if there's somewhere else you want to go, just tell me and we'll go together."
He wanted to smooth things over and repair their relationship.
Evelyn turned her head away and didn't respond for a long time.
He turned around and saw Evelyn's resistant expression.
"Evelyn, Eve, this is all my fault. You can blame me however you want, but please don't let this small thing affect our relationship, okay?"
Evelyn also sat up straight, her back to him as she coldly questioned, "Small thing? You defended Scarlett in front of all those people. What exactly is your relationship with her? And your mom's attitude..."
"She's a business partner, but Scarlett... she saved my mom before and my mom really likes her, so... I just treat her like a sister. Don't worry too much about it."
"A sister? What a good sister. Well, I wish you and your sister eternal happiness together."
"When did you become so mean? I'm trying to explain..."
A sharp phone ringtone instantly interrupted their conversation, and it even sounded like a special ringtone.
She remembered he once said his work environment didn't allow him to be available at all times.
But now this special setting was for someone else.
His face darkened, but he answered the phone immediately.
A woman's affected voice came from the other end, and he ran outside the door looking guilty.
Who knows what was said, but after hanging up, he pushed the door open and only left one sentence.
"I have an emergency right now and can't talk this through with you. We'll discuss everything when I get back."
He came in a hurry and left in a hurry, naturally not noticing the photos and love letters in the trash can that had already been burned to ashes.
Evelyn stood on the second floor, coldly watching him turn and leave without a single word of hesitation.
Until the middle of the night.
Having slept in the afternoon, Evelyn now found it hard to fall asleep. After struggling for a while, she finally sat up.
But in the lonely darkness, her phone flashed several times. Evelyn picked it up and saw messages from Scarlett.
It was a photo of two people pressed so close together you could barely tell whose features were whose.
His bare upper body was covered with the woman's kiss marks, especially the one over his heart.
[Evelyn, sorry~ Your husband is about to become my man. All those kiss marks on his body are my work.]
[He said he loves me the most and insisted I kiss him right over his heart, saying he wants to keep it as a memory forever.]
Though Evelyn couldn't see Scarlett's smug expression in person, she could clearly sense it now.
Evelyn just snorted coldly, took screenshots of this whole string of taunting messages, and sent them to her lawyer again.
Evelyn turned over and went back to sleep, but Scarlett, having received no response, looked at the man lying beside her already sound asleep, feeling even more resentful.
If it weren't for Evelyn's existence, she, Scarlett, should be Mrs. Taylor by now.
She wouldn't have to... try so hard to please him, only to end up as a kept woman.
"Evelyn, we have all the time in the world. Sooner or later... your man will become my husband, and everything you have now will belong to me, Scarlett."
Until noon the next day.
When Evelyn got up, she didn't see Anthony in the room.
She asked the butler and learned he hadn't come back since leaving yesterday.
