Chapter 4
Now, by tacitly allowing Samantha’s belongings to be moved in, Ryan was openly exposing her—Mrs. Knight—to everyone, showcasing her humiliation and failure.
But even if she were to divorce Ryan...
Even if Ryan was eager to grant Samantha—his soon-to-be ex-sister-in-law—official status, she would never tolerate being humiliated like this before the divorce papers were even signed.
She walked in step by step, calmly watching the workers as she pointed to each item being moved inside.
“This furniture is quite valuable. I’m giving it all to you—you can get a good price for it on the second-hand market. Please take it away.”
The workers had been hired for the job.
Hearing about such an unexpected windfall, they were naturally delighted to follow Rose’s instructions. They immediately agreed with cheerful smiles.
Even Evan couldn’t stop her in time. Furious, he pointed at Rose and shouted, “Who do you think you are? This is a gift my mother gave to Sam! Do you think you have the right to make decisions like this? My brother will kick you out!”
Rose understood.
Behind all of this, besides Ryan, was also the influence of her mother-in-law, Selena Smith.
Looking down at Evan, she enunciated each word clearly. “Fine. I’ll go to your school tomorrow and tell your classmates that you’re the one who helped your brother have an affair with your cousin’s wife. The Knight family’s values revolve around cheating, and you’re proud of it. Since you like Samantha so much, I’ll make sure everyone at school knows. How does that sound?”
Rose’s words were vicious.
She had never spoken to him so harshly before. She had always pampered him, so Evan stared at her in stunned disbelief.
His face flushed bright red. “You really are a vicious woman! How dare you!”
Rose shrugged.
Look.
Who says children are innocent? Who says young people speak without malice?
A knife still hurts when it stabs you.
And who made the rule that adults can’t resent children?
The commotion must have disturbed someone.
Selena walked in with a stern expression. “What’s going on?”
As she spoke, she glanced at Rose with a frown. “It’s almost ten. Why are you up so late today? Didn’t you make breakfast yet? What am I supposed to eat? And what about Samantha?”
The words hit Rose like a punch to the chest.
Rose was a doctor, and she understood nutrition and health better than anyone in the family. Every month during the week she stayed at the estate, she personally prepared customized meals and herbal tonics for the entire Knight family, carefully adjusting everything to suit each person’s health needs and tastes.
She woke before five every morning just to finish everything on time before heading to work.
Then the meals would be delivered to the Knight family mansion for Margaret, Selena, Isabella, and the rest of the family.
Including Samantha’s portion.
Before, Selena had always treated Samantha especially well. Rose had assumed it was because Samantha was capable, beautiful, and good at winning over the elders.
But now that she thought about it...
Hadn’t the signs always been there?
Selena had long known Samantha was the woman Ryan cherished most. That was why she favored her so openly. Especially after Samantha’s fiancé was imprisoned, Selena had done everything possible—both openly and secretly—to bring them together.
And all this time, Rose had remained completely in the dark, serving her husband’s mistress for an entire year.
Like a clown spinning in circles for everyone’s amusement.
Not once had they treated her with the respect she deserved.
Rose was no longer willing to tolerate it. Calmly, she delivered her final words.
“If life without me is so unbearable, then go ahead and die.”
Selena’s expression darkened instantly.
She stared at Rose’s retreating figure in disbelief.
Even the nanny standing nearby couldn’t help sighing.
Has Madam gone mad with jealousy over Miss Hill?
How dare she speak so disrespectfully to her mother-in-law?
Selena quickly regained her composure. Curling her lips into a cold smile, she sneered, “Such disgraceful behavior. With such a narrow-minded attitude, you think you can win your husband’s heart? You’re delusional.”
After settling her luggage, Rose went to the hospital where she had worked for the past four years and submitted her resignation.
She had originally chosen this hospital, despite its mediocre reputation, because it was close toKnigswell Group, Ryan’s workplace.
Now that he no longer wanted her, there was no reason to stay.
She had never lacked opportunities. Naturally, she had better places she could go.
That afternoon, she had plans to meet Diana for lunch.
Diana had already sent her the address.
It was nearby.
As soon as Rose walked into the restaurant, Diana waved her over, poured her a cup of coffee, and handed it to her
“Did you finish the resignation process?”
Rose nodded. “More or less.”
“What was Ryan’s reaction when you brought up divorce?” Diana asked curiously.
After all, with that kind of male ego, he might feel insulted that Rose was the one initiating the divorce.
Rose stared at the steaming cup of coffee for a moment before shaking her head. “He didn’t say anything.”
He hadn’t even sat down with her properly to discuss the divorce.
Even after she had finally reached her limit and asked for one, he still ignored her as though nothing had happened.
Men really were ridiculous creatures.
They could leave you whenever they wanted, but the moment you tried to leave first, suddenly it became unacceptable.
Diana gritted her teeth in frustration. “Is his heart made of stone? Seven years! Anyone would react after that long!”
Rose didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Her failure—the humiliation of having her sincere feelings trampled—was exposed completely, leaving her nowhere to hide.
Only she knew the pain and heartbreak she had endured over those seven years.
But her tears had long since dried up.
She was no longer the woman who begged desperately for scraps of Ryan’s love just to survive.
Diana asked what had finally made her decide to divorce him.
Rose held nothing back and recounted exactly what had happened in the emergency room.
Diana turned green with rage and slammed her fist onto the table as she shot to her feet.
“Do those two shameless people have no sense of decency?! Samantha’s fiancé has barely been imprisoned, and she’s already sleeping with his cousin? And now she’s pregnant?”
In all her years, Diana had never witnessed anything so outrageous.
Rose knew Diana had a straightforward personality. Whenever she got emotional, her voice naturally rose.
She quickly reached out to pull her back down.
To be honest, Rose herself didn’t fully understand what had happened the previous night.
The young nurse had only given her a rough explanation, and she and Diana had merely pieced together the general situation.
As for Samantha’s condition, Rose hadn’t even had the chance to examine her personally. Samantha clearly distrusted her medical skills.
But it was already too late.
A cold chuckle sounded behind her.
Rose turned around and saw a man standing behind the screen.
She recognized him immediately.
It was one of Ryan’s few close friends, James Taylor.
The scorn and disgust in James’s eyes were unmistakable. He had clearly heard every word Diana had just said.
And now...
He believed Rose was deliberately spreading the scandal.
“Rose, I truly never expected someone like you to be so vicious.”
James curled his lips into a sneer, his cold gaze sweeping over her before he strode upstairs.
He didn’t even give Rose a chance to explain.
As though she were the one who had done something wrong.
Rose frowned slightly.
Diana exploded in anger. “What a bunch of hypocrites! They aren’t ashamed of what they did, but they’re terrified people might talk about it? We should hang a banner outside Kingswell Group and announce it to the whole world! I swear it will crash their stock prices someday!”
Rose knew that was impossible.
Unless she wanted to lose her place in America entirely.
The Knight family was ruthless. Before Rose had firmly established herself, she had no intention of provoking them too far.
After all, she was outnumbered, and she still had to protect Ariel.
She wasn’t foolish enough to act recklessly.
As for James’s opinion of her, she couldn’t care less.
Upstairs, James pushed open the private room door with a cold expression.
The elegant room was already filled with people.
At the head of the table sat Ryan, naturally.
He carried himself with effortless authority and aristocratic refinement. Tilting his head slightly, he glanced toward James.
Sitting beside him was Samantha.
She smiled faintly. “Who upset you?”
