Chapter 2 Ch 2
"It’s... it’s clearly a result of his improved lifestyle and his expensive gym membership," Leslie stammered, her voice losing its edge.
"And—and luck. Some people just have resilient genetics."
"Resilient genetics?" I laughed, and for the first time in five years, the sound was chilling.
"That’s your professional diagnosis? 'Luck'?"
I turned to Lucian, who was looking between us, a seed of doubt finally flickering in his cold eyes.
"You called me a liability, Lucian. You said I was 'fragile.' But for 1,825 days, I have been the only thing standing between you and a casket. Every meal you called 'simple' was a dose of life. Every tea you mocked was an antidote to the stress that was killing you."
“That's enough, Nancy.” He spat, “You almost influenced me with your little show. Almost.”
“I have recovered fast because I had the best treatment of the city. It’s our medical team’s hard work and Leslie’s study who kept recommending me good medicines throughout these years that I have surpassed my family disease and appear fit.”
“You want me to believe you have been silently treating me and that's by cooking meals for me. Do I look like a fool to you?”
“You are a jealous woman who is only good at creating a feud between us. The truth is you envy Leslie and cook up stories to keep me close to you.”
“But, love can not be earned by lying or cooking meals, Nancy. I love Leslie for who she is, confident and a respected member of society unlike you who is only good at scheming.”
“At the time you married me, you said I'm the most innocent person in your heart and that you will always love me no matter what lifestyle I choose.” I reminded him of the words he had spoken to me while being madly in love with me, each word coming out of my lips was sharp and cold.
“You said I did not need to work for others. You earn enough.”
“You said you liked the meals I cooked for you. So, keep cooking for you.”
“I was too young back then. I did not understand what love is, neither did I differentiate right through the wrong. I was a fool back then.” He said.
“You still are…” I said, “You still don't know what love is, Lucian.”
“Just stop it, Nancy.” Leslie, clearly getting offended by my words, came in between us. “Why don't you understand? Lucian doesn't love you. He loves me instead. So, sign the divorce papers, pack your luggage and get the fuck off here.”
“Leslie is right. I only love her.” Lucian said, “Besides she is getting me an appointment letter with Dr. Aris, the world famous surgeon. Once she takes my case, I’ll be alright.”
“I don't need your so-called meal-treatment, the excuse you are making to hold me.”
“Dr. Aris?” I chuckled.
These fools!
They didn't even know the world famous surgeon they were talking about, the doctor on which they were so overconfident, was the person standing right before their eyes.
Dr. Aris! It’s the identity I had left behind years ago.
“What’s this laugh for?” Leslie spat, her eyes sharp.
I narrowed my eyes as I asked, “Dr. Aris announced her retirement five years ago and declared to the world she will never perform any surgeries.”
“She disappeared in thin air years ago. No one knows where she is. How will you get her appointment letter then, Leslie?”
“What?” Lucian was taken aback, his gaze instantly shifted back to Leslie as he asked, “Is this right, Leslie? Dr. Aris… do you know wher
e she lives? Will she really be ready to meet me?”
