Chapter 3 Ch 3

“Of course, it's right, Lucian.” She replied, “Do you think I would lie to you?”

She then turned to me. Looking at me with a pair of malicious eyes, she spat, “I know where she is. And, I’ll definitely get her to see Lucian and do something about his genetic disease.”

“It's because I have connections, Nancy. A nobody like you would never understand.”

She was lying on my face!

She had no idea who Aris was, how would she know where she lives.

Aris was standing right before her eyes, whom she was calling nobody.

However, before I could unmask her lies, my cheeks buzzed. For a moment, I was paralyzed, a burning sensation swept throughout my face.

Lucian slapped me!

The man I treated for five years, was repaying me with insult and assault.

“You bitch!” He cursed, “I told you to stop.”

Before I could retaliate, before I could even process what had just happened with me, he snatched the gold pendant from my neck, the closest thing to my heart.

I froze at my place, my hands reaching out to grab the pendant back. It was my mother’s last gift, a family heirloom, she made me vow to keep close, always.

“Lucian, Don't-” I warned him, my eyes bloodshot in anger. He knew how important the pendant was to me. Still, he chose to break me in the worst possible way.

“If you want it back, sign the papers. Now!” He threatened, “Or I would just wrap it around Leslie's ankle like an anklet, what say?”

“I think that will look better on my legs instead of hanging down your neck, Nancy.” Leslie smirked.

I clenched my fists tightly. Suppressing the urge of tearing her face off, I said, “Fine! I’ll sign the papers. Just don't do anything to my Mom's pendant.”

“You have my words.” Lucian said, placing the pendant next to the divorce papers. “Sign the papers and it's yours.”

I picked up the pen, the gold nib glinting under the chandelier.

"You want to give me a two-hundred-dollar allowance?" I chuckled, reading the whole agreement. "Lucian, the ingredients in your dinner tonight cost more than that."

I signed the divorce papers with a flourish—the same precise signature that used to authorize million-dollar medical breakthroughs. I slammed the divorce papers along with Lucian’s medical records and slid it into Leslie’s trembling hands.

"Keep the records, Leslie. You'll need them. Because now that I’m stopping the treatment, the toxins I’ve been holding back are going to flood his system again. Within three months, his heart will remember exactly how sick it used to be."

I grabbed the pendant lying close to Lucian's hands and walked toward the door, pausing only to look back at the man who thought he had outgrown me.

"Good luck, Lucian. I hope your new 'Star' knows how to perform a miracle, because you’re going to need one by Christmas."

With that, I walked out of what was supposed to be my home for five years, my hands empty. No luggage, no necessity items. Just my Mom’s pendant. That’s the only thing that belonged to me now.

I checked my old account. It still has the amount Lucian could only dream of, but can't earn throughout his life.

The first thing that I did after leaving Lucian was booking a flight ticket. I returned to where I belonged. My hometown.

The second thing I did was calling my old friend, Mia, the person who used to manage all my meetings and appointments.

“Did anyone by the name ‘Leslie’ try to contact you?” I asked.

“Don't ask. The girl was ready to sleep with the peon of our hospital just to get your number. However, he not only refused her, but also insulted her so brutally that she dare not call us ever again. Don't worry, we didn't tell her anything about you.” She replied.

“Call her back!” I said, “Tell her I’m ready for the appointment.”

“What? Really? Are you back, Aris?” She almost jumped out of her bed in excitement, “Are you resuming your work?”

“Not exactly!” I replied, “I’m only planning a sweet revenge for my ex-husband. I want him to know how it feels when you think you have achieved everything in life and then someone snatches the floor from beneath your legs.”

With that I hang up the call, leaving Mia clueless. But, I knew what I was doing.

Since Lucian was too eager to me

et Aris. I’ll let him meet her for once before he loses his sanity.
