Chapter 3 Rocking our feelings

The sun had climbed higher in the sky, casting sharp beams of light that shimmered across the backyard pool. Mara sat on the pool’s edge, her legs dangling in the cool water, feeling the gentle ripple against her skin. For a moment, she closed her eyes, letting the sounds of the backyard—birds chirping, distant laughter, the soft hum of the breeze—wash over her. Despite her earlier nerves, a fragile sense of calm settled within her.

Jason’s words echoed in her mind: “You’ve got potential. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” She clung to that thought, feeling it like a small spark in her chest. Maybe she wasn’t just the girl who was teased or ignored. Maybe she was more.

Behind her, footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path. Mara opened her eyes to see Damon approaching, a casual swagger in his stride, a smirk playing on his lips. He paused at the pool’s edge, eyeing her with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism.

“Hey,” Damon said, voice smooth but not unkind. “You look… different today.”

Mara looked up, wary but trying to keep her tone steady. “Different how?”

He shrugged, leaning slightly over the water. “Less like the girl everyone ignores. More like someone who’s starting to stand up for herself.”

Mara blinked, caught off guard. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Damon’s smirk softened into something more genuine—almost hesitant. “Just… I’ve seen you around. You’re not as invisible as you think. Maybe you just need to stop hiding behind your glasses and your books.”

Her cheeks flushed, a mixture of embarrassment and defiance swelling inside her. “I don’t hide. I just… stay out of trouble.”

He chuckled softly, a rare, genuine sound. “Yeah, well, maybe it’s time you stopped hiding from what you want, Mara. You’ve got talent—more than you realize. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

She looked at him, surprised by the shift in his tone. For a moment, she wondered if this was somehow a test, or if he was just trying to mess with her again. But beneath the teasing veneer, there was something else—a flicker of respect, perhaps.

“Thanks,” she murmured, unsure of what else to say.

Damon nodded, then turned to head back toward the house. Mara watched him go, her mind swirling. Maybe Damon wasn’t just the bully she’d made him out to be. Maybe, behind that tough exterior, he was just as insecure as she was—afraid of failure, of not being good enough.

She took a deep breath, then slid into the water, feeling its cool embrace surround her. She started to swim, each stroke more confident than the last. With each push, she felt the weight of her insecurities lifting, replaced by a quiet determination.

As she practiced, Jason emerged from the house, watching her with a quiet smile. He stepped closer, offering pointers, encouraging her with every correction. Mara realized that in this moment, the pool wasn’t just a place of her dreams—it was a sanctuary, a space where she could redefine herself.

Later, as Mara dried off on a towel, Jason approached her again. “You did great today,” he said gently. “You’re starting to believe in yourself. That’s the hardest part.”

Mara looked down, her cheeks tinged with pink. “It’s not easy. Sometimes I feel like I’m fighting myself more than anyone else.”

Jason nodded knowingly. “That’s how growth feels. But remember, you’re stronger than you think. And I believe in you.”

Her heart fluttered at his words. For the first time in a long time, Mara felt a flicker of hope—an ember that refused to die out. Maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t destined to be invisible forever.

From behind her, the backyard gate swung open, and she heard Denisse’s voice calling out. “Mara! Damon wants you inside. He’s got some stuff he needs to talk to you about.”

Mara hesitated, then stood up. She looked at Jason, who gave her an encouraging nod. With a deep breath, she headed toward the house, feeling the warmth of the sun on her back and the newfound strength in her steps.

Inside, Damon was waiting by the living room, his arms crossed but his expression less guarded. Mara stepped in, trying to steady her nerves.

“Damon?” she asked softly.

He looked at her for a moment, then sighing, ran a hand through his hair. “Look, I know I’ve been a jerk. I get it. You’re not just some nerdy girl hiding behind glasses. You’ve got guts.”

Mara blinked, surprised by the confession. “Thanks?”

He hesitated, then shrugged. “Yeah. Just… don’t give up on yourself, alright? You’re better than you think.”

A beat of silence stretched between them. Mara felt a strange sense of relief—like a barrier was finally starting to crumble.

As she turned to leave, Damon called after her. “By the way, if you ever want to swim or train, I can show you a few things. You’ve got potential.”

Mara nodded, a small smile forming on her lips. Maybe, just maybe, this was the beginning of something new—something she never expected.

And as she stepped outside again, the pool shimmering in the sunlight, Mara felt a quiet, steady flame grow within her. She was ready to face whatever came next—because she knew now that her true strength lay in her willingness to believe in herself.
