Elias found the empty room at 6:12 p.m.

The mug was washed and set upside down on the towel. The borrowed sweatpants were folded on the bed. The child's drawing was gone. So were the letters.

On the pillow lay his handkerchief, clean now, pressed flat with a note on top.
