Chapter 2 BETRAYAL
VELVELA POV
The car rolled to a stop and I stayed seated for a moment, staring through the tinted window at City Hall rising above the city, its crystal pillars catching the afternoon light like something out of a dream.
Over the years wolves had modernized much of our world, we traded with humans, conducted business with them, adapted to their changing times while remaining separate from them, hidden, as we had always been. Most wolves rarely mingled with humans unless business demanded it, and since Crystalbank sat near the heart of the continent, wolves from countless territories traveled for today's ceremony.
"Are we getting out or what?" Lyra's impatient voice rang through my head.
"Not like we're finding a mate," I muttered.
She growled so hard I felt it in my teeth. One day she was actually going to bite me from the inside.
I opened the door and stepped out, and immediately the sounds outside flooded in, cheers, excitement, whispers. The moment my feet touched the ground, heads turned and bows followed. Young wolves, nobles, warriors, unmated wolves trembling with anticipation. And others who had come only to watch. Or mock. Their eyes dropped the second mine met theirs, but their whispers couldn't escape me.
‘The Alpha is here. Still no mate. Maybe this year. Or maybe never.’
My jaw tightened. I ignored them, the way I always did, and let my black and silver gown flow behind me as I walked toward the entrance.
Inside, the hall was magnificent. Thousands of wolves filled the massive chamber, the air buzzing with a collective hope so thick it was almost a physical thing. I moved toward the center platform as the room quieted around me, every gaze settling, waiting.
I raised my hand and silence fell complete.
"Welcome, everyone." My voice carried through the hall. "Tonight is a night blessed by the Moon Goddess. Tonight, destinies shall intertwine." Cheers erupted. I let them settle before I continued, my eyes moving slowly across the crowd, nobles, warriors, servants, slaves, the forgotten ones standing at the edges. "No title matters. No rank matters. No bloodline matters. Tonight every wolf has the right to find their mate."
The hall exploded into applause, howls, celebration. For once everyone cheered together, exactly as it should be.
Vivienne slipped beside me, bowing before she broke into a grin so wide it nearly split her face. "Isn't this amazing?"
"You're impossible," I said.
She squealed. "I'm finally eighteen."
"Try not to scare your mate away."
Her mouth dropped open dramatically. "I would never."
I snorted and turned back toward the ceremony as the moon rose above the crystal ceiling, silver light pouring into the hall. One by one wolves began finding each other, gasps, laughter, tears of shock and joy. Lyra watched quietly inside me, feeling everything without a word, and the ache of it was familiar enough that I'd learned to carry it without flinching.
I turned to leave.
Then everything stopped.
My breath caught. My entire body locked up as the scent hit me.. Warm, powerful, addicting in a way that made no logical sense, flooding my lungs like something I'd been starving for without knowing it.
Lyra detonated inside me. "MATE!"
The word shook my soul.
I spun around and saw him standing across the hall, his eyes already locked on mine. Brown and deep and intense, glowing with the same recognition I felt crashing through my chest like a wave I couldn't outrun. The bond snapped into place and the world simply disappeared, the crowd, the noise, the ceremony.. All of it gone, leaving only him and me and the unbearable pull between us.
He was already moving through the crowd, which parted for him instinctively, and within seconds he stood before me. Tall, handsome, radiating a power that should have made me step back but only pulled me forward. His scent wrapped around me and his eyes softened, and then a smile broke across his face, the most beautiful smile I had ever seen in my life.
"There you are." His voice was rough with emotion. "I've been looking for you."
My chest tightened so hard I couldn't speak. Six years. Six ceremonies. Six years of wondering if the Moon Goddess had simply forgotten about me, or decided I wasn't worth the trouble. Lyra was completely hysterical in the back of my mind and I nearly laughed from it.
His hand reached for mine slowly, giving me the choice, and the moment our fingers touched sparks raced up my arm and straight through my chest. His eyes darkened.
"Mate," he breathed, like the word was sacred.
Lyra actually fainted.
The crowd erupted around us.. Cheers, howls, celebration, but all I could see was him. Declan Theodore. My mate. My forever.
Three days later, the entire kingdom still wouldn't stop talking about it. Every corridor, every room, every street, the same subject repeated back to me in whispers and shouts and badly concealed grins. The Alpha had found her mate. Lyra hadn't returned to full sanity since the ceremony and I couldn't honestly say I blamed her.
"He's handsome," she said as I stood before the mirror.
"I know."
"Very handsome."
"Lyra."
"And strong." She sighed contentedly. "The Moon Goddess clearly has excellent taste."
Gold fabric hugged my curves, catching the light, it made me look like someone who deserved to be looked at for the first time in a very long time. I stared at my reflection and felt something unfamiliar settle in my chest. Not pride exactly. Something I have never felt before. I felt beautiful, and not because of the dress or the jewelry. Because someone had chosen me. Wanted me. Loved me.
A knock sounded and Vivienne entered, stopping the moment she saw me, her eyes going wide. "You look stunning."
Something in my chest expanded. "Thank you."
She crossed the room and hugged me, her voice trembling with excitement. "You finally found your forever."
Forever. The word sounded like something I'd been afraid to want.
The palace hall overflowed. Every noble house, every warrior, every citizen had gathered to witness the ceremony, and when Declan appeared the crowd erupted with a warmth that startled me. Ancient vows were spoken. Blessings offered. Promises made. As tradition demanded, he was recognized as my equal, a ruler beside his Alpha, a partner in leadership, a shoulder I could finally share the weight with.
When it ended, Declan turned to me. His smile was warm and gentle and safe in a way I hadn't allowed myself to need from anyone.
Then his lips brushed mine.
The crowd roared. Lyra practically exploded. I laughed softly against his mouth and he smiled against mine and for one beautiful, perfect moment, everything felt exactly as it was supposed to.
Hours later the celebrations wound down and I stood alone in our chambers, nervous and happy in equal measure, changed into a simple robe with Lyra still chattering in the back of my mind.
"He loves us."
"He does," I agreed.
"We have a mate." A pause. "We finally have a mate."
I was still laughing when I stepped out of the bathroom and strong arms immediately wrapped around my waist, pulling me back against a warm chest. Every muscle in my body relaxed at once, the way it only ever did when I was somewhere completely safe.
Or somewhere I believed I was.
"Aren't you adorable?" Declan's voice was warm against my ear, and then, between one breath and the next, it changed. The warmth drained out of it completely, leaving something cold and flat and cruel that I'd never heard from him before and that every instinct in my body recognized as wrong.
"Unfortunately..." he said.
I went very still.
"I, Declan Theodore..." His voice was measured. Rehearsed. "...reject you, Velvela Logan, as my mate."
The world shattered.
Pain exploded through my chest with a violence I hadn't known was possible, Lyra howled, the bond snapped like a bone breaking clean through, and the agony ripped through my soul so completely that I stumbled forward, shaking, unable to breathe or think or form a single coherent word.
"Declan…"
Something flashed in the lamplight. Steel.
I had no time to move.
The sword pierced my chest and a sound tore from my throat that I didn't recognise as my own voice, something raw and animal and broken. Blood poured down my body, hot and fast, and my knees hit the floor before I understood that I'd fallen. My vision blurred at the edges.
Declan crouched before me and smiled.
"Fat girls can't be Alpha."
The words hit harder than the blade.
Movement came from the shadows and my blurring eyes found it before my mind could accept what they were seeing. A figure stepping into the light. Familiar blonde hair. A smile I'd known my entire life, now rearranged into something cold and unrecognisable.
Vivienne.
Declan's arm wrapped around her waist. He kissed her, and she let him, leaning into his side with the ease of something long practiced.
"Sorry, sister." Her voice came to me from somewhere distant, like I was already underwater. "It was time for someone worthy to rule. Declan will become Alpha." She looked up at him the way she used to look at me, with trust, with love, with everything I thought I had. "And I will be his Luna."
The tears came before I could stop them, hot and silent and completely out of my control. My mate. My sister. The two people I had let past every wall I'd ever built. The betrayal wasn't like the sword, it didn't tear through clean. It crushed, slow and total, collapsing everything at once.
Declan crouched one last time and his smile widened as my vision darkened at the edges, the room narrowing to a single point of light.
"Remember this."
The words echoed through the chamber, through my chest, through the hollow place
where Lyra had gone completely silent.
“Fat Girls can't be Alpha “
The darkness came for me and I let it, because there was nothing left to hold on to.
