Chapter 2 His Sperm Quality Is Poor
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone, then came Alfred's sarcastic, cold laugh.
"Grace, you can throw your tantrums, but not now. You know how busy things have been lately. I don't have time to deal with you."
Grace closed her eyes, her heart turning ice cold.
"I'm serious..."
"You drugged me on purpose, and your goal in marrying into the White family was obvious. Now, you're talking about divorce."
Every time the topic of their marriage came up, Alfred's attitude was always cold and dismissive.
"Grace, you have no right to ask me for a divorce."
Every word was like a sharp dagger stabbing into her chest. Grace hurt so much that every breath felt like it tasted of blood.
She held it in and forced herself to laugh. "Yeah, I have no shame, Alfred. I want to divorce you. I'm not joking."
With that, she hung up.
Alfred called back, and she hung up again. After that, there was silence from his end.
Grace calmly pulled the car over to the side of the road, then collapsed onto the steering wheel and cried her heart out.
Her love had been too humble.
As the victim, she couldn't explain herself clearly and had always been treated as the one who drugged him.
Before her family forced her to marry him, she had asked Alfred if he actually wanted to marry her. If he didn't, she could break ties with her family. At the time, he said they could get married.
She could tell he had no feelings for her, but since he was willing to marry her, he shouldn't hate her, right? Maybe she could warm his heart little by little?
Too bad it was all just her fantasy.
After wiping away her tears, Grace touched up her makeup in the rearview mirror.
The divorce agreement was carefully placed on the passenger seat. Once she signed it, it would be a legally binding document.
She would reclaim her dignity. She wouldn't cry for him anymore.
Back home, she packed up the things she wanted to take with her and had them delivered by courier to her apartment on the other side of the city. Then she sat on the sofa, staring at the house she'd taken care of for three years, lost in thought.
It wasn't that she felt reluctant to leave, but she was thinking about how to tell the White family about the divorce.
No one in the White family liked her, but Grandpa Edgar White wasn't in good health. Her asking for a divorce wasn't exactly good news. If it upset Edgar and triggered his condition, she'd be the villain.
Just as she was thinking about Edgar, he called to invite her to dinner at the White Manor.
Grace agreed, planning to test the waters tonight.
She thought Alfred would arrive very late, but when she got there, he was already there. The atmosphere in the living room was warm and lively. Alfred sat in an armchair, a smile in his eyes as he looked at the woman in the center of the room.
Brenda had changed into a gorgeous long dress and was holding a golf club, looking serious as she practiced her stance.
On the floor was a golf practice mat with a slight slope, about three meters long.
She aimed at the ball, then after a moment swung lightly. The ball rolled to the edge of the hole and stopped.
"Great! That's better than before!" A female voice rang out. It was Jade White clapping. She was Alfred's younger sister and Brenda's close friend. She'd long wanted Brenda to become her sister-in-law.
"Oh no, it didn't go in again..." Brenda turned to Alfred with a pout. "Alfred, how exactly should I use my strength..."
"Relax your forearm, use your shoulder." As Alfred spoke, he stood up and moved behind her, gently gripping her wrists from behind.
It looked like he was holding her in his arms.
Grace had been standing at the living room doorway for a while now, and no one had paid her any attention.
This painful scene made her eyes sting. She simply walked past them, heading toward the back.
But Jade called out to her. "Grace, do you have any manners? You didn't even say hello?"
Alfred's eyes swept over darkly, the warmth on his face long gone. He stared at her with a gloomy expression, clearly still angry about her mentioning divorce and resignation.
Of course, even if he wasn't angry, he wouldn't speak up for her.
Grace stopped and turned around, her tone flat. "I'm your sister-in-law. If we're talking about manners, you should have greeted me first."
"You dare act high and mighty in front of me?" Jade shot up from her seat. "You can't even have a child, and you still have the nerve to make a fuss in the White family?"
After three years of marriage without getting pregnant, everyone in the White family mocked her without restraint. Every time, she'd bow her head in shame and never expressed any dissatisfaction.
But today Grace didn't want to take it anymore. She raised her voice slightly. "I'm not in a hurry to have kids. If you're so anxious, you can go find yourself a man."
"You!" Jade never expected her to talk back. Her face flushed red with anger.
"Besides, not having a child isn't just my problem." She continued, "My annual checkups are all normal. Alfred's getting older—maybe his sperm quality is poor."
"Grace!" Alfred's eyes burned with fury.
"Alfred, don't be angry." Brenda quickly tried to calm him down, her delicate hand sliding onto Alfred's chest, intimately soothing him. "Grace must be joking with you..."
"You know I'm joking?" Grace's lips curved, but her eyes were cold. "So, you know very well whether Alfred can have children. Then why don't you have one for him?"
"I..." Brenda panicked. "Alfred, I..."
"Grace, you've gone too far." Alfred stepped forward and grabbed her wrist with great force. "Get out."
Grace hissed in pain, but her lips still held a smile. "So you're not even pretending anymore? You're just going to abuse me?"
"What's going on?" Edgar's voice suddenly came from the stairs.
Alfred let go, but his eyes still threatened Grace.
She pretended not to notice and said to Edgar, "We were talking about having Brenda marry Alfred. I'm giving up my position for her."
She hadn't expected an opportunity to test him so soon. Using a joking tone, she wanted to see what Edgar's attitude was.
If he showed any sign of wavering, she'd bring out the signed divorce agreement tonight.
But he scolded her without hesitation. "What nonsense is this? Is that something to joke about? If outsiders heard this, they'd think the White family is so casual!"
Grace felt disappointed, but she still tried. "But Alfred and I haven't gone public anyway..."
"Let's go public this month then." Edgar suddenly said.
The living room fell silent for a moment.
Grace never expected things to develop this way. For a moment, she didn't know what to say. Fortunately, it was only the beginning of the month—there was still time to turn things around.
"You young people should have fun together, play some golf." Edgar looked at the golf mat on the floor. "Stop saying such nonsense."
Then he said to Jade, "Learn from Grace. She's good at golf."
"I don't believe it!" Jade rolled her eyes and threw the club in her hand over. "Grace, can you make this shot?"
"You mean this children's toy?"
The topic was forcibly changed. Grace had no choice but to drop it and act like nothing happened. She turned sideways, didn't take Jade's club, but grabbed another one from the club holder nearby.
Her movements showed disdain, as if Jade's club was dirty.
"Didn't you always bend over to pick up balls when you went to the golf course with my brother?" Jade was even more furious.
"Yeah." Grace murmured.
As an ordinary secretary, what else could she do besides picking up balls and bringing drinks?
"Grace, why don't you teach me?"
Brenda smiled sweetly, her eyes challenging. "Alfred must have taught you hands-on too, right?"
Hands-on, holding her, teaching her like he just did?
Grace's cold gaze fell on her. "I don't have your good fortune, and I don't need to be held like an idiot while being taught."
With that, she casually swung the club with one hand and hit the ball on the ground.
