Introduction

"Let's get married here, today. I'll give you a home, a family, and after you give me an heir, you'll walk away with a hundred million dollars."
After being humiliated on her wedding day and finding her fiancé in bed with his secretary, Angel's world shattered. With nowhere to go and no one to turn to, she found herself standing before Salvatore, a man desperate for a bride to fulfill his dying grandfather's wish.
A contract marriage. One year. One heir. No love.
But as the days turn into nights filled with tension and stolen glances, the line between obligation and desire begins to blur. Beneath Salvatore's cold demeanor lie secrets, a vengeful ex, and enemies determined to destroy them both.
What started as a fake marriage soon becomes a dangerous game of passion and power — and the price of falling in love might be far higher than either of them ever imagined.

Chapter 1

  Worry.

  Panic.

And a little desperation sprinkled here and there hit my nerves. This was the umpteenth time and my fiancé's number wasn't going through.

My eyes ran through the entire wedding hall, the beautiful lights, carpets, flowers, and violinists.

The wedding cake was standing in the middle of the hall, the glamorizing beautiful event set up looked ethereal, the guests were filled to the brim, and my childhood friends from the orphanages where I spent my entire childhood till I was of age and meant to leave where seated excitedly waiting to see me make the biggest decision of my life.

We have been dreaming about this day since we were little girls.

"Hey chill he'll be here in a few minutes. He must be held in traffic. Today is a Saturday, and everyone is trying to get somewhere." Sharon, my friend from the orphanage, tried to make me see reasons but I feigned a smile and excused her walking to the back of the church and punching the digits of my phone angrily.

Simon promised he'd be here as early as he could be but we are running out of daylight and his phone can't be reached.

  Was something going on?

Did he and his friends get into trouble on their way here? If they did, his family members would have called to let me know. What if I dialed his mother but on second thought it was a no-brainer no need to stir the pots?

His mother was kinda too strict and traditional and wasn't happy her son chose a girl from the orphanage. I overheard her once discussing with her husband Simon's Dad that I was going to stain their precious bloodline and further added "Which good parents will abandon their daughter? Her mother must surely be a whore or her father a criminal. Nothing good comes out of children with no family. They're a cancer to society and must be cut off from saner families."

His mother's words broke my heart into a thousand splinters of glass and I cried the hardest I've ever done, living in the orphanage most of my childhood and growing up as a woman to realize I was alone didn't hurt till hearing my soon to be Mother-In-law reduce me to cancer. I stopped picking Simon's call and was ready to call it quits till he promised to make things right which he did.

His mother apologized but I could feel it was one of those half-baked apologies which I accepted nevertheless my heart belonged to her son.

He was the love of my life.

He proposed which I accepted and forward to today our marriage day. He was yet to show up after we spoke the previous evening long into the night and swore our undying love to one another.

My tear ducts burned with tears threatening to fall, and my heart wasn't any better. I felt constricted so badly I thought I was going to experience a heart attack.

He can't possibly abandon our wedding? He can't do this after knowing what I've passed through growing up in an orphanage and navigating life alone.

"Please pick up," my voice had traces of pain evident in my tone.

"Why are you here all alone?" A familiar voice boomed behind and it was my girls.

  "I..."

"We understand you can't lie to us even to save your life. He will be here very soon. It's your day and don't ruin this beautiful face and your makeup. I still feel you're the most beautiful bride in marriage history." Samantha praised clicking her tongue, she helped readjust my veil and wipe tiny beads of sweat from my forehead.

They helped me back into church and the guests were growing impatient and it was getting to me. With each hard stare, my heart wanted to jump out of my mouth but I held on walking proudly with my head held high.

  "Angel!"

  My heart stopped.

My neck snapped behind me instantly and my groom was running to the Aisle with beads of sweat all over his forehead but that didn't matter. I ran into his arms and wrapped my arms around him basking in his scent.

  "Awwww..." The crowd chanted.

"Shall I walk the most beautiful woman on earth to be my bride?" He whispered into my earlobe causing electric shocks and butterflies dancing in my stomach.

"Yes, husband-to-be." I nodded and he led me to the Altar and the priest came forward to officially officiate the wedding.

  Then something caught my attention...

A pink lipstick on the back of his suit and lacy green panties hid in his back pockets.

Blood drained in my face. The butterflies in my stomach turned to hard rocks.

It can't be happening. My eyes must be playing tricks on me.

"Simon, what's it on your jacket?"

"Ugh... it's just something that got on my jacket by mistake." He whispered as the priest was still addressing the crowd. His voice was shaky and unsure.

How long has this man been lying to me? I can't believe he fooled me this far.

"I don't wear pink lipstick and that's not a smudge rather it's a kiss mark on your jacket." My voice threatened to break even with a large outburst. My emotions are getting the better of me.

"I can explain when we get home the priest is about to call for the vows please don't fuck things up with silly emotions." He retorted with no trace of remorse as he made a smiling face.

I untangled my hands from him as the shock was written over his face and nicely collected the mic from the priest turned to face the crowd and bowed slightly before proceeding.

"Hello everyone my groom has one question to answer and his answer will determine if this marriage will hold or not. Dear Mr. Simon Harold, what's a lipstick kiss mark doing on your jacket and what's a green lacy panties doing in the back of your trousers? Those aren't mine so who does it belong to?"

The crowd stared with intrigue and I could hear his teeth chatter and spot his mother from the crowd casting a glaring disgusted look on me and whispered to his father ‘I told you this girl was up to no good'.

I scoffed at women who championed the irresponsibility of weak men and today I wasn't going to be made an example.

"The crowd is watching, stop this madness!"

"Shut up! The only madness here is you coming 8 hours late to your wedding and bringing a strange woman's lipstick and panties." I snatched it from his pockets and flung it to the crowd.

  "What....."

  "Men are shameless..."

"He could cheat any day but chose his wedding, what a scum..."

  "Serial cheat..."

"Answer Me!" The tears began to gush from my tear ducts. I couldn't hold them any longer.

He tried to move closer to where I stood to touch me but a quick hand barring him from even thinking about it and he knew he was going to get it hot.

"Angel, listen to me, it's nothing, it's just a stupid fling. She's just a sport. I know you hate me right now but trust me I didn't want to hurt you." He pleaded his voice trying so hard to convince me that him frolicking with his fling for long hours while the wedding guests and I waited was just a fling. A fling he had no option but to cheat with even on our marriage day was just?

"Simon, if I had stood you up, went over to sleep with a random man hurriedly put my dresses on, and rushed down to the wedding with another man's scent on me and his release dripping from my thighs. Would you take me back? If yes this marriage would hold if no it's over." I fired the strength I never knew in me came to the surface today. Maybe I've been bullied far too long and today was just one of those Enough is Enough.

It's time the world knows I won't be their doormat.

More and more chatter came from the crowd and I could see him folding his fist into a very tight knot.

  He was burning with rage.

"No! I would never marry any woman who fucked a man on our wedding and we aren't equal. A man can do what he wants. I needed to blow off some steam.

What have I done that most men haven't done worse? Bitch I was trying to give you a family, a home, and set you up for life. I made a little mistake and you're calling for my head. Can't you make a little sacrifice just the same way I'm ready to risk marrying an orphan, with no name, no background and to give you an identity in society? Now you're throwing it away you're a damn fool Angel and you know what you'll come back begging I assure you." He spat.

"Good, the crowd gets their answer sorry for wasting your precious time this marriage won't hold."

  "What!"

Pandemonium spread across the entire atmosphere as chants, gossips and whispers. I left Simon where he was standing and was almost half way to the church when.

"Angel, what's the stupid stunt you pulled out there?" Samantha half yelled, whipping her hair to the side.

  Stupid?

"What do you mean stunt?" My voice came out croaky filled with pending tears as I managed to answer. Sharon was fast on her heels and they both had the look of sadness and disappointment.

"Cut it out, don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about. How could you do something as silly as this? Yes he cheated and so? Billionaires cheat, celebrities cheat, kings and lots of men cheat and will continue to cheat. It's male nature there's nothing you can do about that."

I couldn't believe my ears and before words could leave my lips to give Sharon a befitting reply Samantha interjected.

"Yes she's right, let's be realistic here, Angel. Simon is a man and you can't write him off with just one little mistake. He will learn and become a better man but look at the embarrassment you have caused him. The entire crowd and for yourself. I don't want you to feel we are too hard on you but you shouldn't have." She pats my cheek lovingly but her touch burns me with a deep dislike.

This ladies are irredeemable and there sight were nauseating with the gibberish they defended.

  Holly Molly!

"Go in there, apologize to Simon and beg for his forgiveness. This marriage will hold. Look at you so pretty, he gave you a car on your last birthday, got you a nice diamond necklace and promised you a nice trip to the island. This man is sacrificing for you, his happiness and he's willing to give you a home. A family is the very gift you have wished for all these years. Can't you forgive him this last time? Be a good girl, wipe those tears and let's go back there, don't bother about the crowd, we can tell them it was a planned drama and they'll buy it."

"Are you my friend or Simon's?"

"Of course we are your friends, darling!" They screamed in unison.

My feet plopped the heels out of the way as I shook my head moving farther away from them, the church, Simon and the haunting memories that engulfed around me knocking my breath and frying my sanity. "From today henceforth I don't want to see your faces. You both are sick! I hope you both get a cheating walking STD for a husband and see how much it feels good to have a community penis!"

With that said I dashed off to the street with tears blinding my vision with betrayal, pain and dashed hopes eating my heart away while their calls rang behind.

"Get downstairs and apologize to your sister. If you can't, pack your things and get out."
