But I never expected him to open a ring box at his family’s dinner, propose to me in front of everyone—and call another woman’s name.
Everyone assumed Serena was his fiancée, while I was nothing more than a secret he kept in the shadows.

Chapter 1
After three years together, Adrian had never truly remembered my name.
But I never expected him to open a ring box at his family’s dinner, propose to me in front of everyone—and call another woman’s name.
Everyone assumed Serena was his fiancée, while I was nothing more than a secret he kept in the shadows.
He asked me to play along and promised he would explain everything later. He gave her my promotion, my ring, and my dignity, then told me he would make it up to me next month.
Until I decided to leave New York and fly to London alone.
This time, I would no longer wait for him to remember who I was.
————————————
Adrian Moretti's face went blank for a moment.
He was kneeling on the terrace of the Long Island estate. Above him was the deep blue August sky, and beyond the bay, the lights of Manhattan stretched across the distance. He looked up at me, his lips parted, and it took him two full seconds to speak. "Evelyn… I…"
The irony settled in. Even at a moment like this, he still had to think before he could say my name. I knew what he was about to say. He was nervous. It was a habit. After three years together, I had heard every version of that excuse.
At first, he had laughed when it happened. Then he had apologized. Later, he learned to pause before addressing me, as if two silent seconds could hide the name he had almost chosen.
That night, I had dressed for the future I thought we shared. Adrian had asked me to wear the dark green dress he liked, and the estate manager had steered me toward the terrace shortly before dessert. Candles lined the stone rail. A string quartet played inside the open French doors. Even the white roses were the kind I had once pointed out in a shop window.
For one bright, foolish minute, I believed he had remembered everything.
Then he opened the ring box and said Serena's name.
The quartet kept playing. Somewhere inside, a server set down a tray and glasses chimed. Adrian stared at me as though my face had become a question he had not prepared to answer.
I stepped back and pulled my hand away from his reach. "There is nothing left to say. We are done."
"No—" Adrian started, but behind him, the French doors opened. Guests from the dinner party drifted onto the terrace, drawn by the commotion. When they saw the scene, short gasps and hushed voices spread like a ripple across the lawn.
"Oh my God, the Moretti heir is proposing at the family dinner."
"Serena? You and Adrian—why did you never tell us?"
I turned my head. Serena Bellini stood a few feet away, backlit by the tall windows of the Long Island estate. Her cream silk dress caught the light. I was standing behind a trimmed yew bush, half-hidden. From where the guests stood, Adrian's kneeling figure was aimed directly at her.
Serena pressed her hand to her mouth, her eyes wide with surprise. Guests crowded around her, someone laughed and pushed her forward, someone called her name. An elderly woman in a navy suit brushed past me, her champagne glass tapping my elbow. Her voice dropped low: "Dear, you are blocking the photo."
I stepped aside. My hem caught under someone's heel, my hair snagged on a strand of pearls. By the time I straightened up, Serena had been swept to the center of the crowd. She stood beneath the crystal chandelier like a bride waiting for her moment. I stood at the edge like any passerby.
Across the room, Adrian’s eyes found mine.
For one second, I thought he would stand. I thought he would tell them they had misunderstood. It would have cost him embarrassment, nothing more. People would whisper for a week. His father would be angry. Serena would have to return a ring that had never belonged to her.
Adrian only had to tell the truth.
His father was watching from the doorway. Three board members had already raised their glasses. Phones were pointed at him from every direction.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Then he turned back to Serena and pushed the ring onto her finger.
It slid into place. It fit perfectly.
A cheer rose around them. Someone opened champagne. Serena lifted her hand, laughing in a breathless, astonished way that might have convinced anyone who did not know her. But she looked at me over Adrian's shoulder. For half a second, the surprise left her face.
She knew exactly what he had done.
Adrian rose. His eyes followed me, but his hand remained at Serena's waist while his uncle pulled him into a congratulatory embrace. That was the choice, stripped of every excuse he would make later. He saw me leave. He let me go because correcting the room would have been inconvenient.
I turned and walked down the steps of the terrace garden, past the hedges and the gravel path. The lights of the estate grew distant behind me.
I remembered the day I had accidentally seen Adrian's proposal plans. On his desk, a hand-drawn layout of the terrace, marked with the date: August twenty-eighth. A navy ring box sat at the corner of the desk, the lid closed. I thought it was for me. I thought he had spent three months planning this for me.
I had imagined the scene. He would kneel in front of me, and a boat would pass through the bay. The Manhattan skyline would be lighting up in the distance. He might be nervous, he might stumble over his words, his hands might shake when he put the ring on my finger.
But I would say yes anyway. I would fall into his arms, press my face against his coat, and listen to his heartbeat.
That picture was gone now.
I stood at the gate of the Long Island estate and requested a car. The house was too far from the city for taxis to drift past by chance. Twelve minutes later, a black sedan rolled through the iron gates. The driver looked at my dress, then at the brightly lit house behind me, but asked no questions. "Where to?" I gave him my Manhattan address.
As we pulled away, fireworks went up over the lawn. Gold light flashed across the rear window. I did not turn around to see whether they were part of Adrian's plan for me or another detail that now belonged to Serena.
I checked my phone. No missed calls. No messages.
Adrian probably had not noticed I had left. Or maybe he had, and he assumed I was just upset, like before, that I would stay at a hotel for a day or two and come back on my own.
He was wrong.
I opened my email and scrolled to the message I had left unread for over a month. It was from a company in London. The position was two levels above my current one, and the salary was double. I had not replied because I was not sure I could really leave.
Now I was.
The London company had contacted me after a conference in June. Their managing director had sat through my presentation, asked sharp questions, and called me the next morning. I completed three interviews in secret, then stalled when they sent the contract. Adrian had said London was impractical without asking what the role meant to me.
"Once I take over from my father, we'll have more freedom," he had promised. "Don't make a permanent decision because you're impatient."
So the contract waited in my inbox while I waited for him.
I typed my response, told them I had given it careful thought and accepted the offer, and that I could start in two days. Then I hit send.
The confirmation arrived before we reached the expressway. My new manager welcomed me and asked whether I needed more time to relocate.
I typed, Two days is enough.
It was not brave. Not yet. It was simply the first decision in years that did not leave room for Adrian's approval.
