Christina · Completed · 320.0k Words
Introduction
The security guards moved, but I raised my hand. Let her talk. Let her confess.
Because Emily Eugins—the "dying" orphan everyone pities—isn't who they think she is.
Ten years ago, Emily Eugins watched her parents die in a "car accident." Her parents' jewelry empire destroyed. Her inheritance stolen. Four families conspired to erase her parents—and made one fatal mistake: they let her live.
Now she's trapped in her uncle's attic, labeled terminally ill, about to be sold in marriage to a dangerous widower. But Emily has spent a decade planning her revenge, and she's found the perfect weapon: Stefan Ashford.
Cold. Ruthless. Estranged from his powerful senator father.
The man everyone fears just became her contract husband.
Armed with psychological manipulation, forged medical records, and jewelry design skills no one knows she possesses, Emily begins dismantling the four families—one calculated move at a time.
But Stefan's not the pawn she expected. He's hiding scars. Hunting a lost ruby. Watching her with eyes that see too much.
And when he discovers the "dying" girl he married is actually a master strategist with blood on her agenda...
The real game begins.
Chapter 1
Emily's POV
The taxi pulled up to the curb outside Red Maple Club, its tires crunching on the gravel driveway that seemed to stretch forever. I handed the driver a twenty-dollar bill, ignoring his surprised look as he took in my destination.
"Keep the change," I said softly, my fingers nervously smoothing down my cream-colored dress.
The dress was simple but carefully chosen—modest enough to appear unassuming, yet well-tailored enough not to look completely out of place at this exclusive establishment.
As I approached the imposing entrance with its polished oak doors and brass fixtures, a security guard in a crisp black uniform immediately stepped forward, his expression shifting from neutral to suspicious as he took in my appearance.
"Membership card, ma'am?" he asked, more routine than accusatory.
"I don't... I mean, I'm not a member." I let my voice come out just above a whisper—exactly as I'd practiced. "But I have this." I reached into my small purse, retrieving Helen Summers' membership card and the screenshot of a text message. My hands trembled slightly—half-genuine nerves, half-calculated performance.
The guard glanced at both items, his expression neutral. "For future reference, Mrs. Summers should add guests to the list in advance."
"She did mention sending a message about our meeting," I said softly, keeping my eyes downcast, embodying the role I'd perfected over years—the meek, helpless girl. It was a disguise that had served me well, hiding the calculated mind behind the fragile exterior.
After a brief review of the documents, he nodded and stepped aside. "Room 422. Take the elevator to the fourth floor, then right."
"Thank you," I murmured, hurrying past him before he could change his mind.
Once inside, I allowed myself three deep breaths as I walked across the marble-floored lobby. The opulent surroundings—crystal chandeliers, oil paintings in gilded frames, plush leather seating—reminded me of everything that had been stolen from my family.
Ten years ago, they took everything from me. Today, I start taking it back piece by piece.
The elevator doors opened with a soft chime on the fourth floor. I stepped onto thick red carpet, carefully checking the directory plaque on the wall. My actual appointment with Bronson was in room 422, but my target was room 421—Stefan Ashford's regular private suite.
I'd spent weeks memorizing every detail about Stefan Ashford. Thirty-two years old. Heir to the Ashford empire. Known for his ruthlessness in business and his volatile temper. Estranged from his father, William Ashford, who was pursuing a senate seat in Washington. Most importantly, he had a reputation for avoiding serious relationships—making him the perfect candidate for what I needed.
Walking purposefully down the corridor, I pretended to check room numbers while mentally reviewing my strategy.
I took a deep breath, clutching my folder of carefully prepared documents against my chest. I'd spent hours making myself look even paler than usual, skipped lunch to enhance the fragile impression I wanted to project.
My knuckles rapped softly against the heavy wooden door.
"Come in," a deep voice called from inside.
I entered slowly, keeping my eyes wide and uncertain. The spacious room was tastefully decorated in dark woods and leather, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. Two men occupied the space—one I immediately recognized as Stefan Ashford from my research. His sharp features and piercing gaze were even more intimidating in person, sending an unexpected flutter through my stomach.
The other man, presumably his assistant, was reviewing documents spread across a coffee table.
"I—I'm sorry," I stammered, letting genuine nervousness seep into my voice. "I think I'm in the wrong room. I'm supposed to meet Mr. Bronson... isn't this 422?"
Both men looked up, Stefan's dark eyes narrowing as they assessed me. Before either could respond, I fumbled with my folder, causing papers to scatter across the floor.
"Oh no, I'm so sorry!" I dropped to my knees, hurriedly gathering the documents. As planned, the medical report landed conspicuously near the assistant's feet.
He bent to help, his eyes inevitably catching the bold diagnosis: "Rare autoimmune disorder" and the stark prognosis: "Life expectancy not exceeding 35 years."
"This is room 421, miss," the assistant said, handing me the medical report with a look of uncomfortable pity.
"Oh God, I'm in the wrong wing entirely." I clutched the papers to my chest, my cheeks flushing with embarrassment that wasn't entirely feigned. Stefan Ashford's intense stare made my skin tingle.
I expected to be dismissed immediately, but instead, Stefan gestured toward the seating area. "Jason, give us a minute."
The assistant hesitated, then gathered his papers and stepped outside. I remained standing, uncertain.
"Sit." It wasn't a request.
I perched on the edge of a leather armchair, my back straight, eyes meeting his directly despite my supposed timidity. This was the critical moment—I needed to make an impression.
"Since you've already interrupted my meeting, you might as well tell me who you are and what you're doing here," Stefan said, his voice deep and controlled.
"I..." I hesitated, then straightened my shoulders slightly. "Since I've already embarrassed myself completely, I might as well be honest. I have a rare autoimmune disorder. According to my doctors, I won't live past thirty-five."
His expression didn't change, but something in his eyes shifted—curiosity, perhaps.
"And this concerns me how, exactly?"
I took a steadying breath. "My name is Emily Eugins. I was supposed to meet Carl Bronson for... well, an arranged introduction. My uncle believes I should find a suitable match before my condition worsens." I looked down at my hands. "I'm sorry for disturbing your meeting."
A flicker of something—perhaps interest—crossed his face before he masked it with cool indifference. "An arranged introduction? In this century?"
"When you have limited time, Mr. Ashford," I replied softly, meeting his eyes again, "you don't have the luxury of waiting for chance encounters."
He studied me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. I felt like I was being assessed, measured in ways I couldn't fully comprehend.
Before he could respond, the door opened and a flustered club manager entered.
"Mr. Ashford, I apologize for the interruption," he said, before turning to me. "Miss Eugins, you're in the wrong room. Mr. Bronson is waiting for you in room 422."
I stood quickly, clutching my folder. "I'm so sorry for the confusion. Please forgive the intrusion, Mr. Ashford."
Stefan made a dismissive gesture, but his eyes remained fixed on me as I followed the manager to the door. I could feel his gaze on my back, sending an involuntary shiver down my spine.
Once outside, I lingered just long enough to hear the manager's next words:
"That's the Summers' adopted girl... poor thing. Heard he's got her meeting old Bronson today. You know Bronson, the real estate tycoon over sixty and...physically inconvenienced? Funny, that... everyone knows Mr. Summers would kill for those waterfront lots Bronson owns. But hey, not my place to spread rumors, Mr. Ashford. Sorry."
I moved away quickly as the conversation shifted, my mind already calculating the effect of this information on Stefan. If my assessment of him was correct, the knowledge that I was available for marriage would spark his interest—especially since I knew he urgently needed a marriage of convenience himself. My research had revealed that his father was pressuring him to settle down before the senate campaign launch, and Stefan had been actively searching for a suitable temporary arrangement.
I had made my impression. Now I just needed to wait.
Outside in the parking lot, I watched Stefan's black Bentley pull away before approaching the club manager, who was having a cigarette break.
"Thank you for your cooperation," I said, handing him an envelope. "I hope this adequately expresses my gratitude."
He pocketed the envelope with a nod. "Everything went according to your plan, Miss Eugins."
As I walked toward the waiting taxi, my phone rang. Lydia's name flashed on the screen.
"You actually went through with it?" she demanded without preamble. "How did it go?"
"As expected," I replied calmly.
"Emily, do you realize how dangerous Stefan Ashford is? He destroyed the entire North American division of Harris Enterprises just because of a minor slight! Everyone in Oak City is terrified of him!"
I gazed at the city lights spreading out before me, feeling strangely calm. "I know everything about him, Lydia. In fact, the more dangerous he is, the safer I am."
The taxi driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror, but I didn't care. Years ago, when my uncle's family thought they had broken me completely, they had no idea they were creating their own destruction.
"They think I'm weak," I whispered, more to myself than to Lydia. "They have no idea what's coming."

The Human Among Wolves
My stomach twisted, but he wasn’t finished.
"You're just a pathetic little human," Zayn said, his words deliberate, each one hitting like a slap. "Spreading your legs for the first guy who bothers to notice you."
Heat rushed to my face, burning with humiliation. My chest ached — not from his words alone, but from the sick realization that I had trusted him. That I had let myself believe he was different.
I was so, so stupid.

On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...
Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.
George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.
His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"
Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

"Maybe if you weren't such a desperate little—"
I fell. My head cracked against the corner.
Warmth trickled down my neck. Blood.
Their laughter turned to gasps.
The door slammed.
I tried to stand. Couldn't. The room was spinning, fading to black.
Someone... please...
