Crossed Destinies: The Choice of Love
B.P. Read · Ongoing · 78.3k Words
Introduction
She was born behind walls of silver and lies. He was raised in the ashes those walls left burning.
Isadora Veyrant has never made a single choice that was truly hers, neither her name, her fortune, nor the marriage that will unite two ruling houses and secure her family's grip on a city built on other people's ruin.
On the night of her engagement ball, a raid tears through the glittering ballroom, and one desperate, instinctive touch changes everything: a mark ignites across her wrist, silver and undeniable, binding her, by magic older than her bloodline, to the one man in the world she was taught to fear.
Kael Ashmoor has spent his life turning grief into purpose, leading a resistance born from a massacre that stole his mother and his home. He has exactly one rule: never let House Veyrant take anything else from him. Then the old magic marks him for its heir, and suddenly the girl he should hate is the only thing keeping the fire in his blood from burning him alive.
Fate doesn't ask permission and doesn't care about crowns, old grudges, nor the war two generations deep between their worlds. It only guarantees one thing: they cannot walk away from each other and survive it.
But surviving was never the hard part. Choosing each other, in front of a city built to keep them apart, that's the part that will cost them everything. The bond was never a promise. It was only ever a choice.
Chapter 1
The mirror had been lying to Isadora Veyrant for as long as she could remember, and tonight it was working overtime.
It showed her exactly what House Veyrant needed the council to see: a woman poured into silver silk, her dark hair pinned with her grandmother's sapphires, her spine straight enough to hang a portrait from. It did not show the way her pulse had been stuttering since sunset, or the fact that she'd rewritten her engagement toast four times and still didn't believe a word of it.
"You're doing the thing with your jaw," said her mother, appearing in the doorway without having knocked. Renata Veyrant never knocked, it seemed that, like daughters, existed to be managed.
"I'm not doing anything with my jaw."
"You clench it when you're deciding whether to argue with me. Don't, especially not tonight." Renata crossed the room and adjusted a sapphire pin that did not need adjusting. "Tonight you smile, you dance with Damen, and you let two hundred years of council history matter more than whatever this is."
Whatever this is had a name, and it was dread, but Sora had learned by age nine that naming a feeling in this house only gave her mother something to correct. So she said nothing, and let her mother believe the silence was obedience.
Down in the ballroom, the Veyrant house had emptied its vaults to prove a point. Chandeliers threw gold light over three hundred guests in Alto Sangre finery with magic-thread embroidery that shifted color with the wearer's mood, gowns cut from fabric spun in workshops that, Sora only vaguely understood, had once belonged to someone else, before the Purge redrew who owned what. She'd grown up walking through rooms furnished with other families' history and calling it her own.
Damen Ostrell found her before she'd finished her first glass of wine.
"You look like you're attending your own trial," he said, not unkindly. He was handsome in the reliable way of a man who had never once had to wonder if a room would accept him. His mouth curved easy, in a familiar way. They had known each other since childhood summers, and there was a version of tonight where marrying him would have felt like nothing at all, more like signing a form she'd already filled out years ago.
"I look like I'm attending my engagement ball," Sora said. "The similarities are noted."
"Cruel." He offered his arm anyway. "Dance with me before your mother decides we're not standing close enough for the room's taste."
She let him lead her onto the floor because it was easier than not, and because the orchestra had already begun, and because two hundred pairs of eyes were doing the math they'd been doing about her value since she was born. Damen danced well. He always had, therefore it should have been comfortable. Goddamnit, it should have been enough.
She was mid-turn, her hand still resting in his, when the chandeliers guttered. They didn't just went out, but simply guttered, all three hundred of them at once, like something enormous had inhaled the room's air. The orchestra stumbled to silence. Somewhere near the north doors, glass broke, and then a second sound followed it that Sora's body understood before her mind did: the low, structural groan of wards failing.
"Guards to the perimeter," her mother's voice cut through the dark, already sharp with command rather than fear because Renata Veyrant did not do fear in public. "Isadora, with me—"
But the crowd had already turned to current, three hundred silk-wrapped bodies surging away from the broken doors, and Sora lost her mother's hand in the space of a breath. A guard's elbow caught her ribs. A guest's heel tore the hem of her gown. The chandeliers flickered back half-strength, enough to throw long, wrong-angled shadows across the marble, and through the crush of fleeing guests she saw them... six figures in dark, unmarked wool, moving with a discipline the Virelia guard would take another twenty seconds to match.
Cerco raiders. Inside the wall!? Inside her house!!
She should have run toward her mother's voice. She had been raised, drilled, catechized on exactly this scenario
"... if the wards fail, you go to the family vault, you do not go looking for anyone..." and instead her feet carried her the wrong way entirely, toward the one raider who had stopped moving.
He stood very still at the center of the chaos he'd caused, scanning the room the way a man reads a battlefield rather than a party, and for one suspended second his eyes found hers across twenty feet of fleeing silk and broken glass.
He was not what she'd been taught to picture when someone said the Cerco. No feral desperation, no snarling caricature from her childhood tutors' cautionary illustrations. Just a man, dark-haired, sharp-jawed, dressed like the night itself, looking at her the way you'd look at something you hadn't expected to find in a place like this and weren't yet sure whether to hate.
A guard's shout broke the moment. He turned to go.
Sora didn't decide to reach for him. Later, she would try to explain this to her mother, to the council, to herself, and fail every time, because there had been no decision in it at all, pure impulsivity went towards her hand closing around his wrist as he passed, an instinct with no name yet, like grabbing a railing on a stair you didn't know was collapsing.
The heat hit both of them at once, like a burst of hot air you weren't expecting. It began at her wrist and lit up her arm like a struck match, silver-white and searing and impossible, and across the six inches between them she watched the exact same fire bloom under his skin. There was a thin, glowing line circling his wrist where her fingers had been, matching hers mark for mark, both of them frozen in the strobing chandelier-light with their arms outstretched like a depiction out of an old, forbidden story neither of them had ever expected to star in.
The ballroom, what was left of it, went utterly silent.
A women, her mother, she would learn later, though it didn't sound like her mother, didn't sound like anyone who'd ever managed a room in her life, made a sound like the floor had opened underneath her.
The raider looked down at his own wrist, then up at Sora, and for the first time since she'd seen him, something other than calculation crossed his face.
"No," he said, very quietly, like a man arguing with a verdict already handed down. "Absolutely not."
Then the lights failed completely, the guards broke through the north doors in force, and in the dark and the shouting, he was gone, but the mark on her wrist stayed lit for three full seconds after he did, burning silver against her skin like it knew about a secret she didn't yet. As if it had been patiently awaiting.

My Billionaire Husband's Secret
He was the CEO of the Blackwood Group — a man whose wealth and power eclipsed ninety-nine percent of the world.
He was gentle. Romantic. Attentive. I fell for him fast.
But a year into our marriage, I began to notice something — a pattern.
Lucas's sexual appetite was intense — he wanted me almost every night. Yet every single month, he arranged a solo trip to send me away. I told myself it was his way of spoiling me.
Then a message arrived from someone called Sweet An.
Do you really know your husband?
From that day on, my life filled with shadows.
I suspected my husband of having an affair.
When Lucas and I made love, something felt wrong — his body too large, too much, like something I couldn't explain.
I heard sounds during sex — animal sounds, like something feral had crawled into bed with us.
My best friend Mia said: "There are men sick enough to let dogs fuck their wives."
The family doctor, Daisy, told me: "You could never stay by Lucas's side forever. Your background doesn't make you worthy of being his wife. Do you understand?"
I went looking for whoever had been tearing my marriage apart. I fought to win my husband back.
But the deeper I searched, the larger the secret grew — something far darker hiding beneath this supposed betrayal.
Does Lucas truly love me?
And why, out of everyone in the world, did he choose to marry me?

Taryn refuses to be anyone’s property.
Bobby has never been good at following rules.
And Kellan Stroud does not forgive what he believes belongs to him.
The road out of Sturgis may cost them everything first.
