Chapter 6 The Name Beneath the Skin

Morning came slowly, not gently and not at all peacefully. But with that same controlled silence that filled Alessandro’s house. Lucia had barely slept. Not because she couldn’t. Because she didn’t allow herself to.

Sleep meant vulnerability. And vulnerability had never been safe. She sat near the window, knees drawn slightly inward, watching the faint light stretch across the marble floor. Counting time, breathing steady and listening. Always listening.

A soft knock came at the door. Lucia’s body tensed instantly. “Come in,” she said. The door opened carefully. A young maid stepped inside, her movements respectful, almost cautious.

She carried a folded coat over her arm. And a small velvet box. Lucia’s eyes flicked to both. Cataloging. “What is that?” she asked. The maid hesitated slightly before stepping forward.

“These were found with your things,” she said gently. Lucia frowned faintly. “My things?” “Yes.” The maid placed the coat carefully on the bed, then opened the small box. Inside, was a delicate necklace and a ring.

Lucia did not move immediately, but something...Something shifted in her chest. Not recognition or memory. Just… a pull. She stood slowly, walked closer. Her fingers hovered just above the necklace before finally touching it.

It felt cold, familiar. Too familiar. “What is this?” she asked quietly. The maid hesitated again, then spoke softly. “It was hidden,” she said. Lucia’s gaze snapped to her. “Hidden?” The maid nodded. “In the lining of your coat.”

Lucia’s breath hitched. “Sewn into the inner seam,” the maid clarified softly. “There was a small stitch here…” She pointed to the inside of the coat. Lucia moved immediately, flipping the fabric open. And there it was. A nearly invisible line. It was carefully done, deliberate, yet protected.

Her fingers traced it slowly. Someone had hidden this, for her. Or from someone else. Her chest tightened slightly. “Who would do that?” she asked. The maid shook her head. “I don’t know.”

Lucia picked up the necklace again. This time, she turned it over and saw it. Two engraved letters. L.R. Her fingers froze. Something flickered. A flash, a voice, a feeling but it instantly disappeared. Just like that.

Her grip tightened. “What does it mean?” she asked. The maid answered carefully. “It could be initials.” Lucia stared at it. L.R. It meant something. It had to. But her mind...Her mind was empty. Like a door she couldn’t open.

“It was yours,” the maid added gently. “It was hidden with you.” Lucia let out a slow breath. “That doesn’t mean I remember it.” Her voice was calm. Too calm. But inside, something was shifting. It felt unsettling, uncomfortable and dangerous.

Because this....This meant she had a past. A real one. Not just survival. Not just running. She had a name, an identity and a life that had been taken from her. Lucia closed her hand around the necklace, tightly. As if holding it long enough would force the truth out.

It didn’t. Of course it didn’t. Nothing ever came that easily. “Leave it,” she said finally. The maid nodded and stepped back. But before she could leave, Lucia spoke again. “Wait.” The maid paused.

Lucia didn’t turn. “Did anyone else see this?” A beat, then, “No.” Lucia nodded once. “Good.” Because until she understood what it meant. No one else needed to. Not even him.

After the maid left, Lucia sat on the edge of the bed. The necklace in her hand. The ring beside her. Her thumb traced the engraved letters again. L.R. Her chest tightened slightly. “Who were you?” she whispered.

No answer. Only silence. But for the first time, the question mattered. Because the coat was something she kept since she could remember. She just couldn't bear to throw it away even though it no longer fit. The only thing from her otherwise fractured childhood that held any meaning.

Across the house, Alessandro stood in his office, unaware that the girl he had brought into his world…Was beginning to uncover the one truth that could change everything.
