Five Years in a Rainy Season of Marriage
Coralie Sullivan · Completed · 6.6k Words
Introduction
I give him the project without a word.
He's thrilled. Thinks I've finally accepted my place. To reward me, he announces we'll throw a grand celebration for our fifth wedding anniversary.
Chloe finds out and falls apart. Locks herself in the supply closet. Can't bear the thought of watching us celebrate five years of marriage.
Arthur panics. Suddenly the anniversary party becomes a "client dinner" he can't reschedule. He'll take Chloe instead—she's been handling that account, after all.
"You understand how business works," he tells me. "We can celebrate privately later."
I see the photo she posts: Chloe in the restaurant he booked for us, wearing the dress he picked out, his hand covering hers across the table.
I tell him I understand.
He's satisfied. Promises we'll do something even better next month.
He doesn't know I've resigned. Doesn't know he signed the divorce papers three days ago when I slipped them into his contract stack.
We don't have a next month.
Chapter 1
When my CEO husband threatens divorce for the 99th time, this time trying to force me to hand over a million-dollar project to his assistant Chloe, I finally stop fighting.
I give him the project without a word.

...
"I'm assigning the Stella Coffee rebrand to Chloe."
Arthur doesn't ask. He announces. Standing at the head of the conference table, hands flat against the glass surface like he's claiming territory.
The room goes still.
Five faces turn toward me. Then away. Fast.
I don't move. My pen rests between my fingers—steady, controlled. Three weeks of eighteen-hour days. Seventeen revisions. A million-dollar contract I pulled from our competitor's jaws with precision and caffeine and sheer stubborn will.
And now it belongs to Chloe.
Chloe, who joined the team two years ago. Chloe, who still asks where we keep the printer paper. Chloe, whose creative contributions so far include choosing which filter to use on the company Instagram and perfecting the art of leaning over Arthur's desk in low-cut blouses.
"Arthur—" Her voice goes breathy. She presses her fingers to her lips, eyes wide. "I couldn't possibly. Riley worked so hard on this. I'd feel terrible taking credit for—"
"You're not taking anything." Arthur cuts her off with the kind of warm patience he used to reserve for me. Five years ago. A lifetime ago. "Riley's been stretched too thin. She needs to delegate. That's what leadership looks like."
His eyes find mine.
There it is. The test. He's waiting for me to fight. To argue. To prove I'm still the woman who built this company from nothing, who'll claw and scrape to protect what's hers.
Six months ago, I would have.
Six months ago, I would've stood up and reminded him—reminded everyone—that I'm not just an employee. I'm a co-founder. I'm the reason this company exists. I would've fought until my voice went hoarse and my hands shook and I couldn't tell if I was defending my work or my marriage or the last shreds of my dignity.
But that was before I understood something crucial.
Fighting requires hope.
"Fine." The word comes out smooth. Calm. "I'll transfer the files to Chloe this afternoon."
The shock on Arthur's face is worth everything.
He freezes mid-gesture, mouth half-open. He'd prepared an arsenal. Arguments about team dynamics and company growth and my tendency to be territorial.
I just stripped him of his ammunition.
"Well." He recovers fast. Always does. "I'm glad you're finally being reasonable about this, Riley. I was starting to think—" He moves toward me, hand reaching for my shoulder.
I lean back.
His hand drops.
He doesn't pause. Doesn't register the rejection. Just turns to the room like nothing happened and announces, "We're done here."
That's the thing about Arthur. He doesn't feel embarrassment. Doesn't notice when he's been refused. The world bends around him, and he never questions why.
I watch him leave. Chloe follows half a step behind, her hand grazing his lower back as they pass through the doorway. Casual. Possessive.
Nobody else meets my eyes as they file out.
The conference room empties.
I sit in the silence and almost laugh.
Five years ago, we started this company in a garage in the Seattle suburbs. A rented space that smelled like motor oil and had one working outlet. I wrote every pitch deck, balanced every spreadsheet, sweet-talked every client, put out every fire. Arthur wore suits I bought on credit and took investors to lunch on my maxed-out cards. He was good at smiling. At selling the vision.
I was good at making it real.
We were building something together. That's what I told myself. A family. A future.
But relationships are like savings accounts — you can’t just keep making withdrawals without putting anything in, and eventually the balance hits zero.
He thinks I've become reasonable. Mature. Finally understanding my place.
He has no idea.
I’ve turned in my resignation, and he’ll be getting the divorce papers he’d signed himself any day now.
There’s no future for the two of us anymore.

The CEO's Unspoken Love
Before I could answer, he moved closer, suddenly looming over me, his face inches from mine. I felt my breath caught, my lips parting in surprise.
"Then this is the price for speaking ill of me to others," he murmured, nipping my lower lip before claiming my mouth in a real kiss. It began as punishment but quickly transformed into something else entirely as I responded, my initial rigidity melting into compliance, then active participation.
My breathing accelerated, small sounds escaping my throat as he explored my body. His touches were both punishment and pleasure, drawing shudders from me that I thought he felt reverberating through his own body.
My nightgown had ridden up, his hands discovering more of mine with each caress. We were both lost in sensation, rational thought receding with each passing second...

On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...
Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.
George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.
His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"
Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

His return triggers a brutal civil war with the usurper who stole his throne and his fated mate. Hunted by Lycan assassins and a fanatical human commander desperate for the secrets locked in Lena's own past, their only hope lies in embracing the very power Kaelen can't remember and Lena has always feared.
As they uncover a conspiracy that threatens not just the pack, but the future of every living thing, Kaelen must fight for a kingdom he doesn't know and Lena must confront a legacy she tried to bury. In a world of broken thrones and fated bonds, they will discover that the greatest choice is not between love and duty, but between who you are told you must be, and who you choose to become.
