Chapter 5 A Bad Idea
- MELISSA -
The sun rays escaping into the room stung my hall-open eyes.I shut them and rolled over. The song of chirping birds filled the room around me. I heaved, turning my head and covering my ears.
“Fucking sunshine. Fucking birds, fucking…”
“Mam. Mam. Are you awake?” a tender little voice interrupted my cursing. I glanced towards the sound, opening my eyes at the same time. The first thing I saw was a teenage-looking she-wolf. She was smiling pretty hard.
“Why the hell are you smiling?” Was the first thing I asked. I tried to lift myself up from the bed. My body was so stiff, I could barely move my muscles. The teenage she-wolf rushed to me immediately.
“Nice and easy okay. Nice and easy.” She cheered while pressing her hand on my back and supporting me till I sat up. Immediately I settled nicely at the head of the bed, I shoved her off.
“Who are you?” I probed. My memory may be foggy but I certainly did not remember even knowing her before.
“I am your maid. I was assigned to take care of you by the alpha. I’m just doing my job.” She said, smiling again.
“Quite smiling, you are creeping me out.”
“Oh.” She pursed her lips and reverted to a plain face. My gaze left her and momentarily, I studied the room around me. It was big, obviously but other than that, it was no different from my room back home. I sighed, lowering my eyes.
“Do you know what happened to me? I don't remember much.” I asked.
“Well, I only know what the other workers here know. They say that something happened in the cell and many guards were wounded.”
“Wounded?”/ I furrowed my brow. ‘That's not right? Is she right? Did I? I couldn't have… I'm an omega.’ I messaged my temples. The more I tried to make sense of it, the more my head hurt.
“Are you alright?” she asked, drawing closer.
“Yeah, yeah. Just go on.” I replied.
“Okay. Em… well. The alpha ordered the wounded guards to be killed.”
“He what?!” I was almost shouting.
“Shhhhhh” she shushed me immediately, pressing a hand on her lip. “My lady, please… Please be quiet. I am not supposed to be telling you this. The alpha had all of us take an oath of silence. I've already said too much.” She was pleading. I could tell from the way she fidgeted that she was scared.
I made a sign of lock and key with my hands over my lips. She mouthed a voiceless ‘Thank you’. The sound of trumpets broke into the silence of the room. My eyes darted to the window.
“Oh that's just the parade. The royal wedding is happening today. Everyone in the pack is here. It's such a big day.”
“Really? Well I guess that's how it's suppose to be.” I sighed, dejected. I made to get up, and the maid hurried to me. She supported me to my feet and helped me go to the window. I stood there, leaning on the window pane and looking at the beautiful decorations that littered the palace floor.
I bit down on my quivering lips and took a deep breath. Today the entire pack is going to celebrate the wedding of his Luna. That fraud he used to cover up my existence. Does he ever think, even for just a moment, that I might want this too?
A tear trickled down my cheek. “Oh gosh, what am I doing?” I wiped it immediately. “A breeder is insignificant. I'm supposed to know that. I can’r be crying over something so stupid. I look so ridiculous.” I muttered to myself.
A hand pressed on my shoulder. I looked behind me. It was the maid. Her small face wore this deep sad expression. She squeezed my shoulder.
“My lady, I know you will not get a big wedding like this but you don't deserve to be cooked up in this room, watching everything from afar. I know you probably don't want to see the wedding itself but there are pretty good things that happen on a day like this. You deserve to see it and enjoy yourself too.”
“The alpha probably doesn't want me to le…”
“I can figure something out. I will make sure you are back before anyone notices… that is of course if you want this offer.” She flashed me her full set of white teeth and then raised her thumbs at me. I smiled back, genuinely.
“Well, watching a wedding would not be so bad at….” My lips stopped moving. My smile vanished, nothing but a plain unreadable expression was left.
A thought has just hit me,. This was probably the best idea I've had in years. I licked my lips and grinned. Since some stranger is marrying my mate, then perhaps I think she ought to know who is supposed to be where she is.
“Maid, I think I want to see the wedding. I mean, it's such a great opportunity to behold the Luna, the soon to be mother of the pack and the alpha’s chosen mate.” The grin on my lips grew wider. I chuckled a little and then, covered my mouth. The maid stared at me, wondering why I was suddenly in a good mood.
“O…kay. I'm glad you've made a choice. Please…” she glanced at door leading our of the room. “Wait here my lady.” She snuck outside for a while then came back with another one of the workers in the big modern palace.
We did a dress swap and I escaped my room, in the disguise of a maid. Immediately we got outside into the main courtyard where the wedding ceremony was being held, I broke away from the maid and I sank myself into the crowd. My eyes darted from building to building in search of the main halls where the Luna was being dressed and prepared to meet the alpha.
“My lady, my lady… jeez please slow down. Please.” My servant called out in the crowd while chasing me and trying not to draw attention to herself. I didn't stop, instead I tried to lose her in the crowd, again. For a second, I thought I did.
I made it to the main hall. I slipped in through the backdoor and hid in the kitchen area of a really massive room. I watched for a while, until I was sure no one was coming before I came out. I dusted my gown, went out into the passageway and took a look around the place.
‘Mhmm, I wonder which way leads to the bride’s dressing room?’
A hand touched my shoulder. I shrieked, my heart jumping out of my chest. I covered my mouth immediately and spun around. The maid waved at me, she muttered. ‘Sorry.’
“Are you out of your mind?” I almost yelled, placing a hand on my chest. She apologized again. “Nevernind. Were you following my scent or something? How come you found me?”
“Instinct I guess.”
I came closer and looked her right in the eyes. “Listen, if you really want to follow me then whatever you hear or see, you don't say a word of it, understood?”
She nodded. I walked off, she followed me. We strolled down the empty passage until we found the Luna’s dressing room. I told the maid to wait outside. I entered the room and stood there for a moment.
The light was pretty bright. Mirrors stood at every corner like vanities from an ancient century film. My eyes rolled from the shoes to the jewelry, the dresses, accessories, bags… it was beautiful but it would never be mine.
I looked up immediately , blinking back a tear. ‘Melissa, get to work. You don't have time to suck.”
