Chapter 4 Co-patenting
Kael kept looking at her, unable to take his eyes off of her in shock and excitement.
“I finally found you”.
He finally said and Hazel moved back, worried he was here to end her and her son.
“You asked me to leave the pack, why are you still looking for me”?
She asked, trying so hard to keep her calm and act like she wasn't scared.
Kael was silent for a while as his eyes drifted to the little boy in her hand.
Hazel quickly hid him away and gave Kael a warning look.
“Is he…”
He didn't finish the statement before Hazel countered.
“He's my child”.
She said, emphasizing on the word 'my'.
“Our… son”.
He said and her heart skipped a beat as her hand tightened even more.
“I have no son with you Kael. We became strangers long ago”.
She then turned to Dona and handed Lucian over to her before walking out of the hut and closing the door.
“If you're here to kill me, get it over with and leave the village alone”.
She said but Kael shook his head, confusing her.
“You're wrong, you're mistaken Hazel. I'm not here to hurt you”.
He said, causing her to raise a brow.
“You're not”?
She asked and he nodded.
“I traced the people who killed my parents here but it seems they are gone. If they were here, it means they might come after you. You can't remain here”.
He said seriously and she looked at him with shock.
“The… people who killed your parents”?
She asked and he nodded before moving closer to her.
“I know you didn't do it…”
He said and held her hand.
“I have a lot to make up for”.
He said and she looked at him before she scoffed.
“Are you kidding me”?
She asked and pulled her hand away from his.
“Since you know I didn't kill your parents you should leave me alone and find those who killed them”.
She said but just when he was about to speak again, they heard Dona scream.
Hazel rushed in and Kael followed her.
When they got in, Hazel stood in shock and Lucian who was now awake rushed and stayed behind her.
“You… you're the one from five years ago”.
She said but the man remained silent and looked at Kael.
Kael was so focused on the man in front of him.
He felt so drawn to the man that he couldn't help but try to find the familiarity.
“It's time for you to go back”.
He suddenly said and finally turned to Hazel who was wondering what sort of nonsense he was spilling.
“If you want to protect your son, the only place to do that is by Kael's side. From now on, you'll only get attacked even more.
I'm sure you want to keep Lucian safe”.
He said and she swallowed.
“Why are they after my son”?
She asked but he shook his head.
“It's not Lucian they want… it's you”.
He said, making her even more confused.
The man turned back to Kael and spoke.
“I'll see you again… very very soon and I'll be sure to bring you a gift”.
He said and just like that, he was gone.
Until he left, Kael didn't say a word.
Hazel went towards Kael and asked.
“Do you know him”?
She asked but he shook his head and looked at her.
“I don't".
He said, causing her to raise a brow. She was very sure the man knew him and seeing how he was acting, it looked like he knew the man too.
She turned to Lucian, only to see him focused on Kael.
Lucian kept looking at Kael for a while before he finally spoke.
“Daddy”?
His tiny voice called and Kael smiled.
“Mnn, I'm your dad”.
He said but surprisingly, Lucian kicked Kael on his leg with all of his might.
It didn't hurt him but he exclaimed in pain.
“Awch”!
He exclaimed.
“Why didn't you come sooner? If you were with me, no one would try to hurt me or mummy”.
He said and Hazel sighed.
Kael looked at Hazel before looking back at him.
“Forgive me, I'm here now, and I'll never leave again”.
He said and Hazel scoffed.
“We don't need you Kael. Just because he said I should go with you doesn't mean I will”.
She said and he nodded.
“I know your mad at me, and I won't ask you to forgive me so soon. But please, let me protect Lucian.
I promise to make sure what happened back then never happens again”.
He said and she looked at him for a while.
She knew that since they knew where she was, they'd definitely come again and she didn't want to constantly put her son in danger but she also didn't want to go back with Kael.
She didn't hate him, she understood why he would misunderstand the situation back then but right now, she didn't want to have anything to do with him anymore.
But hearing what they said, she knew she had to think about her son's safety.
Yes, Lucian was indeed very strong but he was still too young to protect himself and if she was always going to be in danger, it would be best for her to keep him in a safe place.
“Fine”.
She said, causing Kael to look at her.
“I'll let him stay with you while I try to find out who is behind this. When I find out who it is and what they want, I'll come back for my son”.
She said, stressing the 'my' once more.
She was about to leave when he held her hand.
“I can't do this without you Hazel. Let's protect him together, and find them together.
I know you don't even want to see me, but I hope you give me one last chance to make things right between us”.
He said.
She paused for a long time. She didn't want to leave Lucian and she knew that whoever it was that they were dealing with wasn't an easy being to catch.
She looked at Lucian and then at Kael.
“Don't expect anything from me, we are just co-parenting”.
