Introduction

For three years, I was Julian Vance’s perfect shadow.

By day, I was the flawless executive secretary who kept his multi-billion-dollar empire running without a single hitch. By night, I was his secret, contract wife a convenient arrangement kept hidden behind the closed doors of his penthouse to satisfy a dying man's wish. I loved him in the quiet darkness, enduring his coldness, his family’s venom, and the cruel taunts of his elite childhood friend, Victoria.

But three months ago, the illusion shattered. When I was trapped in a hospital room losing our unborn child, Julian was on a red carpet with Victoria. His message to me through his assistant? “Do not interrupt important business meetings with minor domestic emergencies.”

That was the day Vivian Lane died.
The moment our three-year contract expires at midnight, I slide two papers across his mahogany desk: our signed divorce decree and my immediate resignation.

Julian scoffs, arrogant and completely convinced I’ll be crawling back to him within a month when my bank account dries up. He thinks I'm a penniless outcast with nowhere to turn.

He has no idea that while I was playing his submissive secretary, I was quietly building my own foundation. Now, his biggest corporate clients are jumping ship to my new boutique firm, and an international venture capital network has just hired a legendary, anonymous digital strategist known as "The Cipher" to engineer a hostile takeover of Vance Enterprises.

That strategist is me.
As his empire begins to bleed out brick by brick, the billionaire who once looked down on me finally drops to his knees. But I’m no longer his secretary, and I’m no longer his wife. If he wants me back, he’ll have to survive the ruin I’m about to bring to his doorstep.

Chapter 1

Vivian (POV).

The silver Montblanc pen clicked against the polished mahogany desk, a rhythmic, metallic heartbeat ticking away the final minutes of my youth.

"Sign it, Vivian."

Julian’s voice was like the rest of him: crisp, expensive, and entirely devoid of unnecessary warmth. He didn’t look up from his tablet. His tailored charcoal suit didn’t have a single crease, despite the fact that we had been locked in the executive suite of Vance Enterprises since seven this morning.

I looked down at the document resting between us. Agreement for the Dissolution of Marriage.

Three years ago, this very desk had held a different piece of paper a secret contract binding me to him to satisfy his dying grandfather’s final wish. For three years, I had played the invisible, perfect wife behind closed doors and the flawless, unflappable executive secretary by day. I had kept his schedule immaculate, his coffee at exactly 145 degrees, and my own heart under a heavy lock and key.

"Is the severance amount not to your liking?" Julian asked, his thumb casually scrolling through a financial report. "If you want the villa in the North Hills, I can instruct legal to adjust the addendum. You've been... highly efficient."

Efficient. A hollow laugh threatened to bubble up my throat, but I swallowed it down, replacing it with the standard, professional smile I had practiced in the mirror every morning for a thousand days.

"The compensation is more than generous, Mr. Vance," I said, my voice steady. I deliberately used his corporate title. The boundary needed to be drawn now. "I’ve already reviewed the terms. They match the original parameters we agreed upon."

Julian’s thumb paused on the screen. For a fleeting second, his sharp gray eyes flicked upward, narrowing slightly as they swept over my face. He looked for a crack a tremor in my lips, a hint of tears, the inevitable emotional scene that women usually made when they realized they were being discarded by the most powerful billionaire in the city.

He found nothing. I had spent three years learning how to be a ghost in his presence.

I picked up the pen. The metal was freezing against my fingers. With a smooth, practiced stroke, I signed my name on the dotted line. Vivian Lane. I didn't use his last name. I never really had, except on tax documents.

"There," I said, sliding the folder back across the polished wood. "The legal team can file it first thing tomorrow morning. You are officially a free man."

Julian picked up the folder, his eyes lingering on my signature. A faint, almost imperceptible frown touched the corner of his lips. "You seem in a hurry. Most people trying to exit a marriage with a Vance bargain for more time."

"Our contract expired at midnight, Julian," I said, letting his first name slip just this once, like a parting gift. "I value punctuality. You taught me that."

He closed the folder with a sharp snap. "Fair enough. Your performance over the last three years has been exemplary. To ensure a smooth transition, I expect you to shadow the new head secretary, Miss Lin, for the next two weeks. I've doubled your corporate bonus for the inconvenience."

I looked at him really looked at the sharp angles of his jaw, the flawless slope of his nose, the dark hair swept back perfectly. I had loved this man. I had loved him in the quiet darkness of his penthouse when he would reach for me in his sleep, seeking a warmth he would deny existed the moment the sun rose.

But a human heart can only beat against a brick wall for so long before it breaks.

And my heart hadn't just broken; it had been utterly shattered three months ago. My hand subconsciously drifted toward my lower abdomen, a phantom ache blooming beneath my tailored blouse. Julian didn't notice the gesture. He never noticed.

"There won't be a transition period, Mr. Vance," I said softly.

Julian froze. The casual, dismissive aura around him shattered instantly. He leaned back in his leather chair, his eyes darkening into a dangerous storm. "What did you say?"

I opened my leather portfolio and pulled out a second, smaller document. It was a single sheet of stark white paper. I placed it exactly where the divorce agreement had been.

"My formal resignation," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "My contract as your wife ends tonight. My employment with Vance Enterprises ends effective immediately. My belongings are already packed."

The silence in the office became absolute. The ambient hum of the city seventy floors below seemed to vanish, leaving only the sound of Julian’s breathing, which had grown suddenly heavy.

"You're resigning?" His voice dropped an octave, laced with a mix of disbelief and budding anger. "Don't be ridiculous, Vivian. You run this office. You know my schedule better than I do. If this is a tactic for a raise"

"It's not a tactic," I interrupted, keeping my voice gentle, almost soothing. It was the voice I used when a multi-billion dollar merger was falling through and he needed grounding. But this time, I wasn't saving him. I was saving myself. "I'm tired, Julian. I've given you three years of my nights, and three years of my days. I don't have anything left to give."

He stood up, his towering frame throwing a long shadow over the desk. He looked imposing, furious, and entirely out of his comfort zone. Julian Vance did not get caught off guard.

"Where will you go?" he demanded, stepping out from behind the desk, closing the distance between us until I could smell his cologne sandalwood and cedar, a scent that had haunted my dreams for years. "Who is going to hire an executive secretary who just divorced her boss?"

"That's no longer your concern," I said, stepping back to maintain the distance. I picked up my purse from the side chair. "The transition manuals are on the shared drive. Everything is categorized by color and urgency. Miss Lin will have no trouble if she follows the protocol."

I turned away from him and walked toward the heavy oak doors of the office, my heels clicking defiantly against the marble perimeter.

"Vivian!" His voice barked through the room, a command that usually made vice presidents tremble.

I stopped, my hand resting on the cold brass door handle. I didn't turn around. If I turned around, I might see a flicker of something in his eyes that would make me stay, even if it was just an illusion. I needed to remember the truth. I needed to remember the cold, raining night three months ago when his mother and his childhood friend, Victoria, had cornered me. I needed to remember the spilled tea, the cruel accusations of me being a gold-digger, and Julian's absolute, deafening silence when I called him from the hospital bed, bleeding out, while he was attending a gala with Victoria on his arm. He had told his assistant to tell me not to interrupt his business meetings with "minor emergencies."

He didn't even know he had a child. He had killed that child with his cold indifference, letting his family tear me apart while he looked the other way.

"You'll regret this," Julian said, his voice vibrating with a strange, tight tension from behind me. "You'll realize the world outside this office isn't as accommodating. You'll be back in a month."

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, quiet breath. The weight of three years of hidden tears, silent nights, and unrequited longing seemed to lift from my shoulders all at once.

"Goodbye, Julian," I murmured.

I opened the door and walked out into the brightly lit corridor, leaving the CEO, the marriage, and the man I loved behind in the dark.

"Big Kai?"

He didn't respond but moved his eyes around the room, scanning the place.

"Wha...what are you doing here?"

His icy blue eyes returned to me, sending shivers down my spine. Then further dropped to my dress and then back to my eyes.

"The shit going on downstairs, what does it mean?" he asked, making my legs as weak as they are eager to flee.

"It's....it my wedding,"

He scoffed darkly. "Excuse me?"

I swallowed. "I am......getting married,"

He let out a humorless laugh, looking away and giving me lesser comfort. He looked at me with a demonic frown.

Terror washed me.

"Every single motherfucker/human being here, be it adult or child, including you, will burn before that happens,"

"You want my forgiveness?" he asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous timbre.

Before I could answer, he moved closer, suddenly looming over me, his face inches from mine. I felt my breath caught, my lips parting in surprise.

"Then this is the price for speaking ill of me to others," he murmured, nipping my lower lip before claiming my mouth in a real kiss. It began as punishment but quickly transformed into something else entirely as I responded, my initial rigidity melting into compliance, then active participation.

My breathing accelerated, small sounds escaping my throat as he explored my body. His touches were both punishment and pleasure, drawing shudders from me that I thought he felt reverberating through his own body.

My nightgown had ridden up, his hands discovering more of mine with each caress. We were both lost in sensation, rational thought receding with each passing second...
