I Spent Three Years Inside the Family That Buried My Daughter
Joy Brown · Completed · 11.4k Words
Introduction
Then they put a number on her, slid the check across the table, and asked me to sign away the right to ever ask how she died.
I signed.
They didn't ask what I'd do after.
I changed my name. I spent three years earning a desk in their building, close enough to hear the man who buried her joke about the father who "made some noise, took the money, and went away."
He doesn't know my face. None of them do.
They thought the money bought my silence.
They have no idea what it bought.
Chapter 1
The number came up at 9:14 on a Tuesday, the way the worst things do. Quietly. Between a parking-garage lease and a depreciation schedule.
LITIGATION RESERVE · 2023 · CLOSED. $2,750,000.
I'd waited three years to see that number on a screen I was allowed to touch. So I didn't touch it. I let the cursor rest one row above and waited until my hands belonged to a stranger again. They did. Good.
"Hale. You still breathing in there?"
Dorsey, the deal lawyer, head around the door, tie already loose at ten in the morning. Down the long table, eleven people were scrubbing twenty years of Ashford Holdings into something clean enough to sell to the public. Six weeks to the listing. Everyone was tired and nobody was allowed to say so. I had the dull end of the work: reconciliations, the old accounts nobody wanted the bankers to trip over.
"Still breathing," I said. "I've got a reserve from '23 that never got written down. Two point seven five. Parked in legal."
"For what?"
"Doesn't say. Just closed."
"Then close it harder." He wasn't even looking up from his phone. "Roll it into general legal, drop it in a footnote, and let's not have it walk into a diligence call."
"It'll want a memo. A buyer's counsel will ask what it settled."
"A buyer's counsel will ask about a lot of things. That's why we're paying me." He finally glanced up. "Six weeks, Hale. Tidy, not interesting."
New voice from the doorway. The room changed temperature before I turned around.
Charles Ashford never raised his voice. He had never needed to. Sixty-eight, gray, a hand that had signed away more problems than most men ever meet. He crossed to the head of the table and looked at the line on my screen the way you look at a stain on a floor you already paid to have cleaned.
"There's nothing on that account a buyer needs to see," he said. "It was a private matter. It was handled. Mark it legal, dated and closed, and move on. Are we clear?"
"Clear," I said.
Behind him, his son had gone very still.
Tristan Ashford was thirty and wore money like a man who had never once been told no. But when his father said private matter, something crossed his face and then went into hiding. He reached for his coffee. He didn't drink it.
"Dad." His voice came out thin. "If a buyer's lawyer pulls the underlying file, a footnote isn't going to—"
"A buyer's lawyer will pull nothing, because there will be nothing to pull. That is what Mr. Hale is for. That is what all of this is for." Charles gestured at the room, the bankers, the twenty years glowing on the screens. "You don't get to be nervous now. Nervous was three years ago. Drink your coffee."
Tristan drank his coffee.
"The lake," he said anyway, low, almost to himself. "That's what that is."
"That's nothing. That's a number. Hale's going to make it go away. Aren't you, Hale."
"Yes, sir."
They moved on to revenue recognition. Across the table someone laughed at a banker's joke about the multiple. Dorsey slid me a sticky note without looking up: kill the '23 thing today. I peeled it off the screen and folded it in half, and in half again, the way you fold something you mean to keep.
I sat with the number one more second.
Two point seven five. That was the price. Not a figure of speech for it. The literal, line-itemed, audited price. Somewhere in this building was a folder that called my daughter a private matter, and a man six weeks from a fortune who wanted her dated and closed.
So I wrote the memo. General legal. Settled. No further detail. Clean. It took four lines to file my daughter where no buyer would ever find her. I have done harder things in the last three years. Not many.
Then I copied the account reference into a file of my own, the one they didn't know existed, the one I'd built a single row at a time for three years. I gave it the label I gave everything that mattered. Her initials.
Nobody at that table knew my face. Nobody ever looks at the man who reconciles the footnotes. That is the entire point of him. You can stand very close to people who did a terrible thing, close enough to fix their spreadsheets, and they will never once wonder who you are.
They paid me to forget her.
Six weeks from now, in a room full of cameras that worked, they were going to remember.

COLD (Ruthless Player)
“Please… Nick, wait.” He pulled out, thrusted back in. “How much? Twenty thousand? Fifty? Hundred?” With every question, he thrust harder and harder. My neurons are frying with the confusing feeling in my brain. Torn between pleasure, fear, and panic. I couldn't utter a single sentence to save my life.
His cold eyes pinned me in place while he plundered my body with deep thrusts, which only added to my confusion. My dumb body mistook the mixed signals, my pussy becoming even wetter than before.
“I hope she'd paid you well, because I'm going to fuck you all night long, hard,” he growled. “Sleep, then do it all over again. I want to feel you come for me, Andrea, want to feel you squeeze my cock, milking me.
Begging for me to give you the high only I can, I'm going to fucked you until I fuck all my wife's money's worth, I want you to remember how hard I took you while you're meeting her.” I sobbed, moaned, and tried to scramble out under him.
“No, please…Nick, let….let me explain.” Nick abruptly pulled out. His eyes were cold but hooded.

The Alpha's Stripper Mate
"What?" It was out of my mouth before I could stop it. I did not wait for him to answer me, I walked toward him.
"Dance on my lap."
My head screamed at me to turn around and run. But my whole body responded to his command.
"Yes, Alpha," I pulled my dress over my body, it dropped over my head and fell to the ground behind me. I was left in nothing but my matching bra and thong. My hands covered my chest on reflex.
"Let me see."
My hands dropped to my sides.
I lowered myself into his lap, facing him. His eyes peered into mine, and I could feel his hot breath fan my face. His dick responded to all my moves, hardening against my now-moist vagina. I swallowed hard, allowing my lips to part in a ragged breath. His hands trailed up to my waist.
"No touching."
