Introduction
Getting close to Jackson was supposed to be simple: find the buried proof that clears her father, and disappear before anyone learns her real name. But Jackson isn’t the careless mark she expected.
He’s sharp enough to know something about her doesn’t add up, and dangerous enough that being caught could cost her more than the job.
Then someone else starts using her real name.
Someone who remembers exactly what happened ten years ago, and wants the kind of ending that doesn’t leave room for the truth to matter, only for everything to burn. Now Natalie isn’t just racing to expose what Jackson’s family did. She’s racing to stop a stranger from destroying her only chance to do it right, before she becomes the one person left to blame.
The closer she gets to the truth, the closer she gets to Jackson. And the more she has to lose the moment he finds out who she really is.
She came here to be the hunter. She’s starting to realize she might already be the prey.
Chapter 1
The elevator doors open on the forty-first floor and I already want to turn around.
But I don’t. I fix my badge, straighten my blazer, and walk into the lobby of Ruspoli Industries like I’ve done it every day of my life instead of just in my head, four hundred times, for the last three weeks.
“Kate Brady?” A woman with a headset and a clipboard doesn’t look up. “HR is down the hall, second door.”
“Thanks.” My voice doesn’t shake. Good. That’s the first win of the day.
The lobby is glass and steel and money, the kind of money that doesn’t announce itself because it doesn’t have to. Somewhere above me, behind one of these walls, is a file with my father’s name on it. I just have to find which wall.
I make it four steps before I feel it. That prickle on the back of the neck that means someone’s watching, not glancing, watching.
I turn.
He’s standing by the windows on the far side of the lobby, one hand in his pocket, a phone in the other he isn’t looking at. Dark suit, no tie, like rules are things other people follow. I know his face from a hundred photos, boardroom shots, magazine spreads, but none of them prepared me for the fact that he’s not posing right now. He’s just looking. At me.
I stared at him for exactly two seconds, the amount of time a normal person would before looking away, and then I look away.
“Ms. Brady.”
His voice reaches me before he does. I turn back and he’s already closing the distance, hand extended, easy smile that doesn’t touch his eyes.
“Jackson Ruspoli.” Like I don’t know. Like the whole building isn’t built around that name.
“Kate Brady.” I shake his hand. Firm, brief, exactly as long as a handshake should be and not a second more.
“Kate Brady,” he repeats.
Something in the way he says it makes my heart skip a beat. He’s not just repeating a name back to be polite. He’s turning it over. Testing the weight of it.
“That’s me,” I say, and I even smile.
“Is it.” Not a question. He tilts his head slightly, like he’s recalculating something. “You’ll have to forgive me. I read every file HR sends up before someone starts. Habit.” His eyes stay on mine. “Yours was thin.”
My pulse kicks but my face doesn’t move. Three weeks of building this identity and he calls it thin in the first ninety seconds.
“I’ve moved around a lot,” I say. “Not much of a paper trail.”
“Mm.” He doesn’t blink. “Where were you before this?”
“Denver. Financial consulting.” The lie comes out smooth, rehearsed a hundred times in a mirror until it stopped sounding rehearsed.
“Denver,” he says, and there’s something underneath it, like he’s filing the word away to check later. “I don’t know a lot of consultants who move to a new city for an entry-level compliance position.”
“I don’t know a lot of CEOs who personally greet entry-level hires in the lobby,” I say back, before I can stop myself.
For a second, nothing. Then something shifts in his face, not quite a smile, something sharper.
“Fair,” he says. “I like to know who’s walking my halls.”
“And now you know.”
“Do I?”
The question sits there between us, too long, too pointed to be small talk. Behind him, through the glass, the city stretches out gray and endless, and I think about how easy this was supposed to be. Get in. Get close. Get out. Nobody said anything about a man who reads files like he’s hunting for the one line that doesn’t add up.
“I should get to HR,” I say. “Don’t want to be late on day one.”
“Of course.” He steps aside, but doesn’t fully let me pass. Not blocking me, just close enough that I have to walk past him to reach the hallway, close enough that I catch the low, unhurried way he says his next words, meant only for me.
“Welcome to Ruspoli Industries, Kate Brady.”
He says it slow. He says it like a man laying a card face-down on a table, in no rush to flip it over, because he already knows what’s underneath.
I walk toward HR without looking back, spine straight, badge catching the light, every step controlled.
Behind me, I hear him say something to his assistant, low, and then footsteps, his, moving toward the executive elevator instead of following me.
I don’t breathe out until the HR door closes behind me.
He knows something’s wrong with my file. He doesn’t know what yet.
But he will look. Men like that always look.
And when he finds it, there won’t be a version of the truth that keeps me in this building, or out of a very different kind of trouble.

But the King didn't give me a badge of honor. He gave me a death sentence.
"Raven Thorne shall be wed to the King of Grok," he announced, his voice echoing in the silent hall. Princess Ellie, the woman who had tormented me for years, slapped her hands over her mouth to hide her cruel laughter. She was supposed to marry the Beast. Now, I was the lamb being sent to the slaughter in her place.
They say King Liam drinks the blood of his enemies. They say he is more monster than man. And now, I have to walk into his bedroom, wearing the Princess's silk gown, and pray he doesn't tear me apart.
I looked at the King, tears streaming down my face. "I'll do it," I whispered, my voice trembling. "But my mother must be safe."
I sold my body and soul to a monster to save her. But when the carriage door opened and I finally looked into the Beast's golden eyes, I realized the terrifying truth...
He wasn't a stranger. He was the man I met in the woods.
