Chapter 5

Laika didn’t sleep.

The master bedroom of the penthouse was too large, too quiet, and suffocatingly luxurious. Every time she closed her eyes, the horrific sequence from the warehouse replayed in her mind—the muted thwip of the suppressed pistol and the cold, mechanical finality with which Cassian had ended Lobo’s life.

She lay awake for hours, trapped in his dark silk sheets, her heart hammering at every distant sound. She was safe from the cartel, but she was now sharing a roof with a predator far more powerful, and infinitely more dangerous, than the men who had bound her wrists.

Exhaustion finally claimed her in the bruised hours before dawn.

When her eyes snapped open, bright morning light was pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Cassian was gone.

Resting at the foot of the bed was a matte-black designer clothing bag. Inside, she found a cream silk blouse, sharply tailored charcoal trousers, and minimalist heels. Brand-new undergarments were tucked neatly inside, the tags still hanging. Her throat tightened. He knew her exact measurements before she even knew his full name.

She changed quickly, her raw wrists stinging against the smooth silk. When she stepped out into the sprawling, minimalist living room, she expected to find Cassian.

Instead, a tall man in a crisp dark suit rose from the shadow of the corridor.

“Miss Ross,” Jaye said, his voice flat and unyielding. “Mr. Valecrest does not like to be kept waiting. The car is downstairs.”

Ten minutes later, she was inside a tinted town car, slicing through the glass-and-steel monoliths

of the central district. The headquarters of Dominion Constructions completely dominated the skyline—a towering fortress of reflective panels and vertical steel ribs sharp enough to cut the sky. The private elevator ride to the top floor was soundless. The doors opened directly into a massive executive suite. Everything inside was deliberate, cold, and dark oak.

Cassian stood behind a massive desk. He looked immaculate in a tailored charcoal suit, his silver-threaded tie perfectly aligned. The faint, drying cut on his knuckles was the only proof of the monster she had witnessed the night before.

“Sit,” he commanded. The air in the room instantly thickened with his authority.

Laika sat, her spine rigid, refusing to lean back against the leather. He had demanded the night before that she would go with him to Zurich as his escort. It wasn't a request; it was the price of her life.

He didn’t hand her the folder. He slid it across the polished wood with a slow, deliberate flick of his fingers. “Read it.”

The paper felt heavy beneath her fingers. Valecrest Private Representation Agreement. Duration: Three weeks.

Location: Zurich, Switzerland.

Among the strict confidentiality clauses, one line in particular made the breath catch in her throat: Physical companionship will occur at the absolute discretion of the principal within the duration of this agreement, as circumstances require.

“This isn't an agreement,” Laika said, her voice tight, her eyes locking onto the final clause. “It’s a demand. And this phrasing is entirely vague.”

“It is precise enough for my purposes,” Cassian replied, his gravelly tone vibrating right through the floorboards.

“And if I refuse?”

Cassian leaned forward, resting his powerful forearms on the dark wood. He didn't threaten her. He didn't have to. His presence alone was an implicit promise of ruin. “You won’t. I am not purchasing obedience, Laika. I am commanding your presence. There is a difference.”

The sheer arrogance of his tone made a hot surge of anger flare in her chest—but beneath the defiance, a sudden, treacherous heat bloomed deep in her core. She hated how his absolute authority pulled at her, how his commanding aura made her feel entirely hyper-aware of his body. Other women threw themselves at his feet, desperate for a shred of his attention. They were easy. Forgettable. But Laika was a wild thing, teeth bared even while trapped in his snare. Looking across the desk, she saw a dark, dangerous spark ignite in his pitch-black eyes. He wanted the absolute, ruthless satisfaction of breaking her.

“This could destroy my reputation,” she forced out, trying to stabilize her voice. “It will elevate it.”

She studied him. He had built a gilded cage around her, stripping away every ounce of her breathing space.

But as she stared at his tailored waistcoat, she remembered what was hidden inside his private safe. The encrypted hardware token.

Three weeks in Zurich with Cassian meant zero freedom, but it also meant absolute, intimate

proximity to his unguarded moments, his briefcases, and his private suites. It was her only chance to steal the token back, send the files to the hacker, and finally avenge her father's execution.

Stepping into the monster's fire was her only path to justice.

“I won’t be controlled,” she said quietly, a fierce challenge burning in her eyes.

A ghost of a smirk touched the corner of his lips, sharp and lethal. “I wouldn’t respect you if you were.”

Her fingers hovered over the signature line. This was a definitive step into the dark. She signed her name, the scratch of the pen on the expensive paper echoing like a gunshot in the quiet office. Cassian smoothly pulled the folder back and closed it. “Good girl.”

The praise flooded her spine with an intense, intoxicating heat that made her knuckles lock. “We leave at six a.m. Monday,” Cassian added flatly. “Zurich waits for no one.”

The elevator ride back down felt significantly heavier than the ascent. When the doors finally slid open into the grand marble lobby, Laika stepped forward—and stopped dead in her tracks.

Serena Blackwell stood directly by the reception desk. Her blonde hair was styled perfectly sleek, a designer coat cinched tightly at her waist.

Serena froze the moment she saw her. Her cold gaze traveled over Laika slowly, taking in the designer blouse and the sharply cut trousers she had worn straight out of Cassian's private quarters. Recognition dawned on her face, followed instantly by sheer, aristocratic disbelief. “What are you doing here?” Serena asked sharply, her manicured nails digging into her designer clutch.

Laika straightened her spine, channeling the survival instinct she had honed over the last twenty-four hours. “If it required your attention, you would have been notified.”

Serena’s blue eyes flashed with vicious anger. She stepped closer, lowering her voice into a lethal whisper. “You think playing dress-up makes you special? You were just a server at Aureline, and now you’re walking out of his private elevator.”

“That isn't your concern,” Laika replied evenly, attempting to step around her.

Serena blocked her path, her posture stiffening with desperate, toxic venom. “You have no idea what kind of monster you are playing with, do you?”

Laika held her gaze, refusing to flinch. “I know exactly who he is.”

“No, you don't,” Serena hissed, stepping so close Laika could smell her sharp perfume. A cruel, chilling smile curved Serena’s lips. “You think he cares? You think being in his circle, out of his private elevator makes you queen?”

Serena leaned down, her voice dropping into a blood-curdling murmur.

“Two years ago, another girl thought she could play games in Cassian’s inner circle. She thought she was smart enough to hide secrets from him. Do you know what Cassian did when he caught her?”

Laika’s chest tightened, a cold sensation settling in the pit of her stomach.

“He didn't dismiss her. He didn't call the police,” Serena whispered, her eyes gleefully tracking Laika's reaction. “He dragged her down to the docks himself and watched his syndicate men put a bullet through her head. He erased her like she never existed.”

Serena straightened up, smoothing her coat with practiced elegance, looking down her nose at Laika.

“Cassian Valecrest doesn't keep women, little girl. He destroys them the second they cross him. You think he's interested in you, let's see if you make it back alive.”

Serena turned on her designer heel and walked toward the glass elevator, leaving her words hanging in the air like a lethal sentence.

Laika stood frozen in the middle of the grand marble lobby, her heart thumping violently against her ribs.

She had just signed a contract to spend three weeks alone with a man who executed anyone who kept secrets from him—while carrying the biggest secret in the city right in her chest.
