Introduction

Cassian Valecrest is a man built out of shadow, wealth, and absolute control. For ten years, he has governed an untouchable empire from the dark, eliminating anyone foolish enough to stand in his path. He lives by one unyielding rule: weakness is a death sentence.
Then he met Laika.
Quiet, fierce, and entirely immune to his power, she was supposed to be a temporary distraction. Instead, she became his obsession. For her, the city’s most dangerous man would step out of the shadows, break his own rules, and burn down anyone who dares to breathe her name.
But Laika is hunting a ghost of her own.
Driven by a six-year-old murder that destroyed her, she is risking everything to unearth the truth—completely unaware that the ruthless killer she’s searching for is the very man holding her in the dark, worshipping her every breath.
As old syndicate blood rivalries ignite and secrets bleed into the light, the trap snaps shut. Traitors are moving in the shadows, weapons are drawn, and the truth is waiting to detonate.
In a world ruled by blood and deception, loving Cassian Valecrest is a dangerous game. But betraying him is fatal.

Chapter 1

The encrypted hardware token inside Councilman Sterling’s inner suit pocket was worth a lifetime of answers—or a single bullet to the skull.

Laika stood in the shadow of the Elite Club’s marble pillar, her breath coming in slow, disciplined measures. Beneath her crisp white waitress shirt, her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Six years ago, her father was executed in cold blood right here in Ravenshire. That very night, Councilman Sterling then a corrupt liaison for Precinct Six—had systematically authorized a ten-thousand-dollar payout to bury the homicide case forever.

Three days ago, the dark-web hacker had sent her a single, untraceable ping:

[Hacker]: Sterling carries the legacy vault hardware token on his jacket pocket tonight at Valecrest’s victory gala. Retrieve that key while serving his booth, or your father’s murder file vanishes from the city servers permanently. The Security System gets purged every sixth year. You only have one chance.

This wasn't just a punishment shift. It was a heist.

Her mind briefly flashed back to twenty-four hours ago at Aureline, the sister club where this nightmare had begun. Cassian Valecrest had been dining with Serena Blackwell. Serena, noticing the way Cassian’s pitch-black eyes kept lingering on Laika, had deliberately stuck her foot out sending Laika crashing to the marble floor in a shower of shattered glass and spilled wine.

When Cassian casually tossed a stack of hundred-dollar bills at her feet, calling it 'compensation' for the trouble, Laika’s soul had flared with white-hot rage. It was the exact same sickening gesture Precinct Six had used to dismiss her father's murder six years ago. Driven by raw, unyielding pride, she had picked up the cash and thrown it right back into Cassian's devastatingly handsome face.

She didn't know that Cassian had immediately called his friend Marco—the owner of both venues—and ordered her reassigned to the Elite Club tonight so he could keep her under his thumb.

Across the glass-walled venue, the atmosphere hummed with elite power. Ravenshire’s high society had gathered to celebrate Dominion Constructions securing a multi-billion-dollar city contract—a deal that cemented Cassian Valecrest’s absolute supremacy separate from the dark shadow of his syndicate legacy.

Laika smoothed down her tailored black trousers, lifted her silver cocktail tray, and glided straight into the wolf’s den.

Councilman Sterling sat at a high-backed leather booth, flushed with expensive scotch and laughing boisterously. Laika approached with liquid grace, her eyes strictly lowered, playing the invisible server.

“More scotch, Councilman?” she asked softly.

“Ah, bring another round, darling!” Sterling boomed, leaning back and lazily waving his hand.

As Laika reached down to clear the empty crystal glasses, her movement was deliberate. Her fingertips brushed against the lapel of Sterling’s heavy wool jacket. With years of survival instinct honed on the dark streets, her fingers slipped into his inner pocket with ghost-like precision.

Click.

Her nails caught the cold, metallic edge of the encrypted hardware token. She slid it out, palming it into her apron pocket in a fraction of a second.

Got it.

Adrenaline surged through her veins like liquid fire. She stacked the glasses onto her tray, bowed her head politely, and turned to walk toward the back service corridor leading to the alley exit.

She took one step into the dimly lit, carpeted VIP hallway. Then the air went dead cold.

A massive, shadowy figure stepped out from the private alcove, blocking her path entirely. Laika slammed to a halt, her chest heaving as she lifted her gaze.

Standing six-foot-four in a dark charcoal three-piece suit was Cassian Valecrest.

He towered over her, radiating a suffocating, predatory dominance that instantly made the hallway feel microscopic. His striking features were etched in sharp, terrifying perfection, and his dark eyes pitch-black and utterly merciless were locked onto her.

A slow, lethal smile curved the corner of his lips.

“You’re moving fast tonight, little waitress,” Cassian murmured, his baritone voice a low, gravelly vibration that sent a violent shiver straight down her spine.

Laika’s throat went bone-dry. She forced a stiff, professional mask onto her face, holding her tray tight. “Excuse me, Mr. Valecrest. I need to return these to the bar..”

Before she could finish the sentence, Cassian took a single step forward, crowding her back against the wallpaper. His heavy hand shot out, grabbing her wrist with iron force, locking her in place.

His thumb slid over her palm, effortlessly forcing her fingers open, before his hand slid straight into her apron pocket pinching the heavy metallic token she had just stolen from Sterling.

Laika’s breath caught in a sharp, terrified gasp.

Cassian pulled the encrypted drive into the dim light, inspecting it between two long, scarred fingers. He didn't know why a waitress was stealing data from a politician, nor did he care. All he knew was that the fiery thief from Aureline was caught red-handed in his party.

“A little thief,” Cassian purred, bringing his lethal face down until his lips were inches from her ear. His scent—expensive cedar, leather, and faint gunpowder engulfed her senses. “First you throw my money back in my face at Aureline... and now you pull a heist inside my venue, under my security, right in front of my eyes?”

“Give it back,” Laika hissed, her pride flaring through her terror as she glared into his pitch-black eyes.

Cassian’s gaze dropped to her mouth, his thumb reaching out to trace the rigid line of her jawline with a possessive, dangerous pressure. “You have a habit of getting under my skin, girl. But you just stepped into my domain.”

Before Laika could bite back a response, heavy, unsteadied footsteps echoed down the hallway. Dylan Norman a notoriously sleazy real-estate developer stumbled into the corridor, holding a half-

empty glass of scotch. Cassian had been tracking Dylan from his VIP booth all evening, his jaw clenching every single time the pervert’s eyes had dragged down Laika’s body at the bar.

“Hey!” Dylan slurred, glaring at Laika’s back, completely oblivious in his drunken state to who was holding her against the wall. “What’s taking so long with the drinks, girl? Come back to my table..” Dylan reached out, his hand lunging greedily to grab Laika’s waist.

He never touched her.

The lingering rage Cassian had been holding back all night exploded in a microsecond flash of terrifying, brutal motion. Cassian let go of Laika’s jaw and struck.

Cassian snatched Dylan by the throat, driving the grown man backward into the wall with enough violent force to crack the plaster!

BOOM!

Dylan gasped for air, his face turning purple as Cassian lifted him two inches off the floor with a single hand.

Cassian didn't even turn his head. His dark, bloodthirsty eyes remained fixed entirely on Laika’s pale, wide face as he spoke to the choking man in a cold, deadly growl:

“I’ve watched you track her all night, Dylan,” Cassian rasped smoothly, his fingers tightening around the man's airway. “Touch what is mine again, and I will feed your hands to the river before the night is over.”

Cassian shoved Dylan away, letting the man collapse onto the carpet, choking and gasping for air before crawling frantically back toward the main room.

The hallway fell into absolute, terrifying silence.

Cassian turned back to Laika, stepping back into her personal space. He casually slid the stolen hardware token into his own waistcoat pocket, resting his broad hand against the wall behind her head, trapping her completely within his frame.

“You’re a thief, little waitress,” Cassian murmured, his pitch-black eyes gleaming with an absolute, unyielding possession. “And now you belong to me.”
