Chapter 5 Chapter 5 Aftermath

There was no hunger between them this time, none of the desperation that had consumed them the night before. The morning light caught the red highlights in her strawberry-blonde hair as he traced a strand with one finger, captivated by its simplicity. She was still asleep, her breathing deep and even. He mapped the landscape of her like a man reading scripture—the freckles across her shoulder, the thin scar along her ribs, a story he didn’t know yet but wanted to, and the lines around her eyes that spoke of laughter, of living, of choosing herself. His hand settled on her hip, grateful she had stayed. Enzo shifted, lifting his head briefly before settling again. Val didn’t move, unwilling to break the quiet moment when everything felt honest and peaceful.

She began to stir, unaccustomed to being touched by anyone but Enzo while she slept. Her eyes fluttered open, confusion clouding her face for just a moment before she realized where she was.

Then she saw Val.

He didn't look away or pretend he hadn't been watching her sleep.

Hey, good morning.”

His voice was soft, almost unnervingly so coming from a man like him. He reached up slowly, giving her time to pull away, and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. His thumb brushed gently across her cheekbone.

Something about the tenderness of the gesture left her feeling strangely exposed. Last night she'd given him her body without hesitation. This felt different. Lying beside him in the morning light, with nowhere to hide behind passion or desire, she suddenly felt far more vulnerable than she had the night before.

Don't worry. You're safe here. I won't let anything happen to you.”

The words carried weight. Val didn't strike her as a man who made promises lightly.

Enzo shifted closer, settling against her side. Beneath the blanket, Val found her hand and laced his fingers through hers. He shifted slightly until she had nowhere to look but at him.

Look at me, Zora.”

She did.

Neither of them spoke. For several long moments, they lay there, looking at each other. There was no urgency between them this time, none of the desperation that had consumed them the night before. Just the quiet intimacy of morning and the strange realization that neither of them seemed ready to move away.

Val's gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. He leaned toward her slowly, leaving the last bit of distance for her to close.

Zora closed it.

Their lips met softly, the kiss slow and tender, entirely different from the passion of the night before.

There was no yesterday, no three months of watching, no debt, lies, or orchestrated meetings. Just this—the taste of her, the warmth of her skin against his. He let her deepen the kiss at her own pace, his hands cradling her face as his thumb stroked her cheek before he slowly pulled away.

Want some breakfast?” he asked. “I’ll cook.”

He started to rise, but her hand shot out and caught his arm.

Don’t go…”

Val stilled.

Zora's grip tightened before she could stop herself. She knew how ridiculous it was. He was only getting out of bed. But lying there with him, wrapped in the quiet of the morning, last night still felt real. The moment they got up, she was afraid reality would come rushing back in, and somehow all of this would disappear with it.

Val seemed to understand without her having to explain.

He settled back beside her and pulled her against his chest.

I’m not going anywhere as long as you want me here.”

She tucked herself closer, listening to the steady beat beneath her ear.

Not when we get out of this bed. Not when breakfast is over. Not tomorrow.”

His hand settled gently against the back of her head.

You don't have to figure out what this is right now, Zora. Neither do I.”

His arms tightened around her.

But this isn't going to disappear just because morning came.”

Morning light spilled across the sheets as Zora lay against him, her thoughts wandering despite everything he'd just said.

For the first time, she wondered whether she could ever really be enough for a man like him. Val was younger, powerful, wealthy, and could have almost any woman he wanted. Maybe one day he'd grow tired of her. Maybe whatever this was wouldn't last.

The thought hurt more than she expected.

Then she caught herself.

She wasn't going to destroy today worrying about a future that hadn't happened yet. If that day ever came, she'd deal with it then. Until it did, she was going to enjoy the man beside her and whatever they were becoming for as long as it belonged to both of them.

The decision settled something inside her.

She looked up at him.

Make love to me. Show me what this is going to be while I'm with you.”

Something in her expression changed, and Val saw it. The uncertainty was still there, but she wasn't running from it anymore.

And neither was he.

Show you how it’s going to be? Very well. As you wish…”

He moved with intention, slower than the night before. His lips found the hollow of her throat, each touch deliberate, almost worshipful.

This is how it’ll be with me, Zora,” he murmured against her skin. “No pretending. No wondering where you stand.”

He lifted his eyes to hers.

If you want me, I’m here.”

He took his time as she adjusted to him. She was still sore from the night before, and when her breath caught, he stilled immediately.

Easy. Breathe for me.”

His forehead rested against hers as he waited, moving again only when she relaxed.

That’s it,” he whispered. “You’re so fucking perfect.”

When he began again, his movements were slow and deep, giving her body time to adjust as the initial soreness gradually gave way to pleasure.

Tell me if you need me to stop.”

Enzo watched curiously from the end of the bed.

You’re so big,” she panted, then glanced toward Enzo.

“Out, you peeper.”

Val laughed, genuine and unguarded.

Go on, buddy. Out.”

Enzo huffed indignantly but left. Val reached over and closed the door before turning his attention back to Zora.

Now we’re completely alone…”

He returned his attention to her, gradually finding their rhythm again. His eyes stayed on hers as the intimacy built between them.

You feel incredible, Zora. All of you, just like this.”

His voice caught as he lowered his head and kissed her, slow and tender.

As the rhythm deepened, she met each movement with her own, drawing a rough breath from him.

Yes,” she moaned. “Just like that. I love it. Please don’t stop…”

His hand slid up her spine and into her hair, holding her close as his breathing grew ragged.

I could stay here all day. This is heaven.”

Yes,” she moans, “Just like that, I love it. Please don’t stop…”

She pushed herself back with enthusiasm, meeting his thrust for thrust, control fracturing with each thrust.

That’s right. Take what you need, my girl. All of it…”

His composure began to slip as she matched his rhythm, pleasure building between them.

Come for me again, Zora. Don’t hold back. Let go.”

His voice cracked as their climaxes hit almost together, leaving them breathless and spent. Neither seemed willing to move afterward. They remained tangled together until exhaustion finally won, pulling them both back into sleep.

When Zora stirred again later, every muscle protested. She stretched carefully beneath the sheets, feeling the aftermath of their night and morning together.

How many rounds did we go? she wondered.

Val was already awake, propped on one elbow, watching her stretch with obvious discomfort. A knowing smile played at his lips.

Four times. You were insatiable.”

His voice was rough from sleep and satisfaction. He reached over and began massaging her shoulder, carefully working the tension from her muscles.

How are you feeling? Sore?” He caught her expression and gave a quiet chuckle.

Yeah. Why am I even asking?”

The teasing faded as his hands continued their gentle work. He might have been pleased with the night they'd shared, but seeing the discomfort written across her face brought his concern quickly to the surface.

He rose, then paused, pressing a kiss to her temple.

Stay in bed. I’ll bring coffee; don’t move. Dr.’s orders...

She giggled and grabbed his hand.

Bath first.”

He nodded and helped her up carefully, supporting her as they moved toward the marble bathroom. Steam rose from the tub he had already run.

He must have started it while I was sleeping, she thought.

I figured you’d need a bath. I was thinking about coffee first, but hot water will help with the soreness.”

He guided her carefully into the tub. Heat enveloped her, immediately soothing muscles that protested every movement. He knelt beside her and began gently massaging her shoulders.

Stay as long as you need. I’ll be right here.”

A slight smile curved his mouth as she relaxed beneath his hands.

Hmm.” She glanced at him suspiciously. “How did you start this without me noticing? I’m a hyper-vigilant sleeper. I would’ve felt you leave the bed.”

His fingers paused against her shoulders.

Smart woman. I didn’t leave. Enzo woke me about twenty minutes ago. The tub’s on a timer system. I set it from my phone while you were sleeping.”

Zora stared at him.

Wow. I was expecting a butler or something, but a remotely controlled bathtub? That’s super bougie.”

She wiggled her eyebrows at him, and he chuckled as his hands resumed their slow work across her shoulders.

Val considered the word bougie and laughed.

Yeah, you’re right. I’m a bit bougie. You have no idea.”

His dark eyes met hers through the steam.

You’re right to be vigilant. Just know you’re safe with me, Zora. I’ve got you.”

She looked over her shoulder at him.

I’ve been safe for almost twenty years, but my body doesn’t think so. It’s just what it is. Nothing I can do about it.”

She shrugged and picked up the sponge from the other side of the tub.

She glanced back at Val with a sly smile.

So… aren’t you…?”

Her eyes dropped pointedly to the water. Val followed her gaze, then met her eyes again, amusement dancing in his.

He stepped into the tub behind her and settled against the warm porcelain, drawing her gently back against his chest. His arms slipped around her waist as she relaxed into him.

There. Happy now?” He handed her the soap.

Mmm, very.”

Zora poured soap onto the sponge, then shifted in his arms until she was facing him. She ran it slowly across his shoulders and neck, enjoying the simple intimacy of caring for him.

After a moment, her movements slowed, and she looked into his eyes.

I was scared to come here,” she admitted.

But now I feel so good, I’m scared for a completely different reason.”

He went still beneath her touch, the sponge resting against his collarbone as he processed her words. His arms tightened around her, not constraining, but grounding.

What are you scared of?”

His voice was low and steady. There was no judgment in his eyes, just the quiet attention of a man who had spent three months learning her tells and all the little signs she gave away without realizing it. He knew she didn't speak lightly.

I’m not going anywhere, Zora. Whatever this is, we face it together.”

His hand came up to cup her jaw, his eyes holding hers.

You can trust me with it.”

That’s just it right there. I’m scared this is just some kind of trick or dream, and it’s not really happening. Nothing this good ever lasts or doesn’t come with conditions, at least not in my life.

Val studied her for a moment before answering.

Then don’t trust the promises yet. Trust what I do. Let me prove to you this is real.”

His heartbeat was steady beneath her palm, alive and undeniable.

Feel that? That’s real. I’m real.” His eyes held hers. “I’ve wanted you for three months, Zora. I watched you ride that motorcycle like you owned the world. Watched you help people everyone else walked away from. None of this was a trick, and it sure as hell wasn’t just about getting you into bed.”

His thumb brushed slowly across her cheek.

You don’t have to trust me all at once. I can wait. Just don’t run before I have the chance to prove it.”

Zora swallowed.

Running is how I protect myself. I don’t know how not to.” Her voice softened. “But I don’t want to run this time. Can you help me?”

Yes.”

Nothing more.

He pulled her against him, and she rested her forehead against his chest, his heartbeat still steady beneath her cheek.

He stroked her wet hair in a slow, soothing rhythm.

We don’t have to know how. We’ll figure it out together. Every time you feel the urge to run, you tell me. When I’m angry or struggling, I’ll tell you. And we’ll hold each other like this until it passes.”

His voice a vow, a promise clear and defined.

I’m not going anywhere, Zora, and neither are you, not this time.”

Enzo appeared in the bathroom doorway, watching them with ancient knowledge. Val didn’t break the moment, just kept holding her, steady as stone, while the water cooled around them.

You’ll still hold me if I make you angry? Even if that’s why I want to run?”

The insecurity in her voice made him lift her chin until her eyes met his.

Do you think I’m going to let one fight make you disappear?”

His answer came without hesitation.

I’ll get angry. You’ll get scared. We’ll probably both say the wrong things sometimes. But we’ll talk about it, work through it, and learn each other.”

Her eyes held his, unwavering and intense, and for one unsettling moment, Val felt as though she were looking straight into his soul.

His hands framed her face as he pulled her closer.

Even when I become the biggest pain in your ass?” she asked. “Because I will. I’m not easy, Val, and I’m going to get just as pissed at you.”

He laughed, the sound warm and unguarded.

I’m counting on it. You think I want easy?” His thumb traced her jaw. “You’re going to drive me crazy, and I’ll probably drive you insane. We’ll get angry, we’ll work through it, and I’ll still be here in the morning.”

He kissed her forehead.

That’s the whole thing, Zora. That’s what I want.”

She glanced toward Enzo, who had started pacing near the door.

He probably has to pee. We should take him out.”

What are the plans for today?” she asked. “I have a three-day weekend, so no work.”

Val pulled the drain and helped her from the tub, wrapping a towel around her.

Three days?” A smile tugged at his mouth. “Stay with me.”

He ran a hand through his damp hair.

I want to show you my office, my world. No more hiding pieces of myself from you.” He glanced toward the increasingly impatient Enzo.

“But first, we rescue him, get some coffee, and then come back here.”
