Chapter 1
He didn't knock. He simply walked in.
A perfectly tailored charcoal suit clung to his broad shoulders, his shirt clinging to him like even the fabric knew not to cross him. His sleeves were rolled up, dark ink disappearing beneath the fabric as if concealing secrets she wasn't meant to know.
His voice was low as his eyes slowly traced over every inch of her, making her a bit nervous. The air itself seemed to shift with his presence.
His eyes settled on her. Slowly. Thoroughly. Not with hunger alone, but with the quiet certainty of a man who had already made up his mind.
Her breath caught at the sight of the man before her, confusion sending her thoughts running wild: how did her father owe him money? He doesn't gamble; what is going on here? Why would he be saying this… She tried to ask what he means as he leans in- so, so close; his voice skims her throat seductively: "
Valerio Ricci didn’t waste time when Zara tried to speak; he only lifted his hand, calm quiet direct, -piercing.
Her words died in her throat before they were ever spoken.
He closed the distance between them, one hand resting casually in his pocket while the other brushed a loose strand of dark hair from his forehead. A nervous tell she couldn't help but notice.
"Zara Blackwood," he said, his voice low enough to send a shiver down her spine. "Your father owes me a great deal of money."
She frowned, looking confused
"Since he can't pay..." His gaze never left hers. "...someone has to."
You want the debt cleared? Then come with me. I'll make sure you pay… but not with money."
She crossed her arms, summoning courage she didn't entirely feel, and asked, "If I'm going to pay my father's debt, I deserve to know exactly what I'm worth to you. How much did he owe anyway?"
A smile crossed his face—not warm. Sharp.
One dark eyebrow lifted as he appreciated the spine in her.
He replied, "Two hundred and fifty thousand."
He said it the way someone else might say hello—casual, conversational, as if it were nothing.
He continued, "Zora, your father thought he was smarter than the house. He wasn't."
He straightened, rolling his shoulders back. His eyes never left hers.
"But that's not what this is about anymore, Zora."
The way he said her name—like he'd been practicing it—made her pause.
"Two-fifty clears the debt. What happens between us now? That's something else entirely."
He moved toward the window, silhouetted against the city lights bleeding through.
"So, you coming, or do I need to make this harder on your family?"
Confusion crossed her face.
"But you said it would clear the debt. Are you going back on that now? Or are you just super demanding on how fast this happens? And where would we be going anyway?"
He didn't turn around. His jaw tightened—just slightly—at the accusation.
"The debt clears. That's what I said, that's what I meant. The debt and what I want from you aren't the same conversation”
His voice dropped lower.
"I don't go back on my word, Zora. That's not how I operate."
He finally turned to face her, and there was something almost wounded in his expression before it hardened again.
"We're going to my place, uptown. You'll have security, comfort—anything you need."
He stepped closer, his cologne cutting through the space between them—something expensive, dark.
"But you need to understand something. Two-fifty buys your family's freedom. What I want from you? That's a separate arrangement entirely."
His hand extended toward her in a suggestive manner, indicating the seal of a contract.
"So, are you coming willingly, or do I carry you out?"
"I guess that's what confused me. You said coming with you clears the debt, and at the same time it's different. I find that difficult to understand. I want to be clear, so I don't make mistakes or anger you or myself."
She asked for clarity without pretense.
Looking deeply into her eyes, he felt slightly disarmed.
He studied her for a long moment, and something shifted in his expression—less predator, more human.
He lowered his hand.
"You're right, I wasn't clear."
He moved to the couch, sat as if he owned it, and gestured for her to do the same.
"The debt—two-fifty—that's done. Your father pays me, or you come work it off. Either way, the ledger balances and your family walks free. No retaliation. That's the business part."
His eyes found hers.
"But I didn't send men to collect because of money, Zora. I came myself."
He leaned forward.
"So when I ask you to come with me, that's separate. That's me wanting you near. No strings attached to the debt—you're free regardless. But I'd prefer you choose to stay."
He waited on borrowed breath.
"Does that make sense now?"
She looked up at him through her eyelashes, took a deep breath, and asked, "You... you want me for... for another reason? What is that? Why would you want me?"
She asked, heart beating fast, trying to make sense of it all.
His chest rose and fell hard like a man who had just been threatened.
The silence stretched—long enough that she could hear the city humming below.
"You're fifty-five, and you ride a motorcycle like you're still twenty-five. You walk into a room, and people listen without you saying a word."
He stood and moved to the window again.
"You have a heart that shouldn't exist in the world, counseling addicts, believing in people nobody else will touch."
When he turned back, his eyes were different—darker, hungrier.
"I've watched you for three months, Zora. Before your father ever owed me anything."
His voice cracked slightly—just enough to prove he was real.
“So yes, yes, Zora, I want you for another reason. I want you because I can't stop thinking about you.”
She couldn't stop the thoughts racing through her mind. It's both creepy and flattering at the same time. But he is some kind of Greek god of a guy—strong, powerful. Why me? I'm nothing special. Yes, he sees the outside, but inside I'm much different, and I'm not a supermodel.
Then she looked at him, really looked at him, and she saw the cracks in the armor and the loneliness behind his eyes, and she melted. He watched the blush creep up her neck, saw her chest rise and fall faster. His hands clenched at his sides—fighting the urge to close the distance.
He watched her long enough to know that she didn’t think she was special or important, and he saw it written on her face as he said,
“You think you're nothing special; that's where you're wrong.”
His voice was rougher, unguarded. He moved toward her slowly—not threatening, just inevitable. Like gravity.
"Three months of watching you help people who've destroyed themselves, of seeing you smile at a sunrise from your bike like the world hasn't beaten you down yet. Three months of knowing I'm going to hell for wanting someone like you. Not because you're not good enough but because I'm not."
He stopped just close enough that she could feel the heat radiating off him.
“And I know what a woman like you would automatically think. I don't need a supermodel, Zora. I need someone real. Someone who sees me like this”—he gestured to himself, the cracks visible now*—"and doesn't run."*
She swallowed hard.
“Why the theater? Why not just find a way to meet me and see what happens naturally… Why do all this? What was the reason?”
He exhaled like she'd asked the one question that mattered.
“Because men like me don't get to approach women like you in coffee shops. We don't get normal; your father's debt was convenient—an excuse my conscience could live with. A reason to be near you that didn't feel like what it actually is.”
He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated with himself.
“If I'd just shown up at your door three months ago saying I wanted to know you? You'd have called the police. So I waited for a reason that made sense. A reason that gave you a choice, even if the choice felt forced.”
His eyes met hers.
“I'm not a good man, Zora. But I'm honest, and I needed you to see that before anything else.”
She chuckled.
“Hmm, that's twisted... you're nuts, you know that, right…”
She laughed and shook her head... like he'd just said the most immature thing in the world.
“So what do you expect from me now?”
A genuine laugh escaped him—the first real one. It transformed his face, softened the edges.
“Twisted is generous.”
He said as he sat back down and gestured for her to sit in the spot beside him.
“I expect you to come with me, stay for a while. Let me show you that this isn't just obsession—it's something real, and if you decide it's too much, that I'm too much? You walk. The debt stays cleared. Your family stays safe. No consequences.”
He leaned back, studying her. His voice dropped.
“But I'm betting you won't leave.”
Zora thought for a moment.
“So... you want to go from stalking me, to threats, to living together in one afternoon? You don't move slowly, do you? So what would ever make me think that you would be able to have any sort of longevity? But I suppose that doesn't matter now; I will go, for there really isn't another choice at the moment. I need to take care of my family.”
He went very still at that. The words landed differently than she intended—he heard the resignation in them. The lack of real choice. Something flickered across his face. Regret, maybe. Or recognition.
“You're right, I don't move slowly.”
He stood, extending his hand again. This time it was different—less demand, more invitation, with a slight plea.
“But I will for you. Because if you're only coming because there's no other choice, then I haven't won anything yet.”
His voice was quieter then, stripped of its certainty.
“Pack a bag, one night. See how it feels, and if you want out tomorrow, you're out. No strings, no debt hanging over your head. I meant what I said."
He waited, palm open nervously.
"The choice is actually yours now, Zora…”
“Hmm, well, we shall see, but I suppose it won't kill me, right?"
She looked at his hand as she started to reach for it, heart pounding and thoughts running wild.
I know nothing of this man. He could be a serial killer.
“Wait, how do I know you're safe? How do I ensure my safety?”
He chuckled at her words, thinking, “A little late for that...”
“I'm Valerio Ricci, one of the richest men in the world, the richest in this city; you have my word. Google me right now, and you will see.”
She looked him up on her phone: Valerio Ricci, suspected mob boss, business owner, contractor, eligible bachelor, etc., and she was more baffled than before as to why her...
“Very well then, I see.”
She said, looking baffled and unsure of the world as she knew it.
He chuckled softly as her hand slid into his—warm, real. His fingers closed around hers with surprising gentleness, like he was afraid she'd dissolve.
“I won't kill you; I don't even plan on hurting you at all.”
He said as a ghost of that dangerous smile returned.
“Probably won't kill you.”
He chuckled again, playfully. He pulled her up slowly, steadying her. Their bodies were close. Very close—close enough that she caught the warmth beneath his cologne.
“Pack light. We leave in ten minutes.”
As he reached up, he brushed a strand of hair from her face with one knuckle—deliberate, intimate.
“And Zora? Thank you for choosing to walk through that door. I'll wait downstairs; be quick.”
He let go reluctantly and walked toward the door. He paused at the threshold without turning back. The city lights caught the tension in his shoulders.
“Valerio?”
He turned and looked over his shoulder with a puzzled expression.
“I will be right there; don't worry.”
He paused mid-step, shoulders tensed at the sound of his name on her lips. When he turned, there was something raw in his expression—like hearing her say it changed something.
“I know you will.”
His eyes held hers for a beat longer than necessary, then he nodded. A promise, a question, an acknowledgment that she had called him by something intimate.
He disappeared down the hallway, and she heard the door open and close.
The house fell silent except for the hum of the wind outside and the distant sound of footsteps fading.
Alone now—really alone—with ten minutes to decide what she was actually packing for: a night, a test, or something that might unravel her. What the hell am I doing? I must be just as unhinged as he is for going along with this. Dad must be getting senile. This is not normal. He never gambles.
She sighed and stood in front of her closet.
She grabbed her things, her medicine, plus supplies for Enzo.
“Hope he understands he gets both of us,” she said to the dog, her trusty French Bulldog.
Enzo's ears perked up at the tone in her voice. He waddled over, his compact body pressing against her as she threw clothes into her suitcase—leggings, sweaters, bras, sleepwear—practical, boring. Nothing that said she was about to walk into the penthouse of a rich stalker...
He followed her while she grabbed her medications, vitamins, and toiletries. He knew something was different. Animals always do. She grabbed his things as well and headed for the door.
